Hey guys, just wanted to say hi from the home of the cheese steaks and soft pretzles. Anyone know of a offroad tour coming up in the area? Thanks,

Mike

Welcome to CX! :wink-big:

I think you are in a pretty good location to meet up with some guys to wheel with. I believe Rausch Creek may be in your neck of the woods if I'm not mistaken. Which is home to ECXC 2008 this year... well nearly every year.

I want a soft pretzel smothered in cheese now. Tell me that doesn't sound good!?

Welcome Mike! Great to have you here!

welcome man! I am 2 hours north of you in Wilkes-Barre. Rausch Creek is the place to be in PA. I wheel there usually once a month and yes ECXC is being held there July 17th - 20th.

I want to go to Rausch Creek so bad. i have some minor upgrades on my X so i should be ready for the beginer trails. I'm the only one with an X and all my friends with 4wd have 20's and go crazy when they get water spots. I had a friend with a K2 blazer but trans fluid caught fire and burnt up the truck. Think its time to meet new friends. Guess i picked the right place. I'll actually be camping in the Pocono's next weekend. Anyone have pics of their X on the trails?

There is a forum topic here on CX for trips and what not. Also check out www.youtreadtube.com (http://www.youtreadtube.com). It's like youtube but strictly for offroading videos and they have an xterra category. Watch the vids and you'll see mine as well as several other member's xterras there.

What kind of mods are you wanting to do before heading to Rausch?

And you're seriously underestimating your xterra if you think you are going to have to stick to beginner trails. When I was bonestock, I actually took on several moderate trails and one trail rated difficult with it and never got stuck. Granted I do have a lot of belly damage to show for it but it amazed me and the guy I was wheeling with.

Let me stress something... I'm not saying try to do a difficult rated trail. It was sort of a whoops... oh shit... too late now... kinda thing. Once we realized we hit a different trail it was too late to turn back or turnaround.

The single most effective mod you can do to ANY rig is more aggressive tires.

Hit the trails, have a blast and show us some pics bro!

well i went and put 265/70's Bridgestone's on which is slightly bigger than stock for 01 but since its my daily driver and at the time wasn't really into major offroading i figured it was ok. Now that i really want to hit the trails i know that i will have to find some MT's or something that will get me more prepared. I think though if i get a rear locker that would be a great mod. Any thoughts? I have faith in my X just not really sure what i can and cannot do with my X. Thanks Drake for the info.

Mike...I will be sure to post up on here when I am going to rausch. I am highly capable and I am ok with doing beginer trails also. The last time I went with a stock Xterra I was spotting them through higher level blue trails without any damage what-so-ever. So I am a great spotter as well. A locker is a great addition! I just got mine installed but haven't gotten the chance to test it out.

Oh a rear locker is a choice mod to have but unfortunately for us, it comes with a very hefty price tag and only one manufacturer makes them. It's the ARB air-locker. It's on my mod list to add to my X but it's way down my list. Tires, armor, UCA's are ahead of that.

The main thing to ALWAYS keep in mind is your clearance. Picking the right lines will make all the difference in offroading. It will decide whether you pull off an insane crawl through a rock garden or you pop over the first rock and teeter like a turtle on it's back.

Join a regional club or two and meet some people to wheel with and definitely go to ECXC if you can. You will get to see a full spectrum of xterras. From bonestock to just insanely modded.

I found this one on Truckperformance.com. Let me know what you think. I know it says for open Diff's but they must have one for my limited slip.

No...that will not work. Your xterra has 33 spline axle shafts. The lockrite is made for 31 spline axle shafts. They came in pathfinders and early frontiers. You can get that to work if you get an open diff and 2 axle shafts out of a 99 Frontier King Cab. That one has the same width axle as our xterras. But locating that stuff is another story. I tried to do that so I could put a full Detroit locker in the rear, but it ended up being really really close to the same price as an ARB. So I decided that an ARB would be a much better choice because I could then lock it and unlock it whenever I want so it would be much more tame on the street and not chirp the tires around every corner.

Ah i got ya. So what's the cost of the ARB and can i do it my driveway with the help of a ASE Mechanic?

Drake

AC (4x4parts.com) is selling them for $760. BUT that's only for the locker itself. Then add in another $150 for the onboard air compressor that engages the locker. Which brings it to a nice $910 for the whole setup. From the reviews and forums I've read through, even if there were other options for lockers, you won't find a better one than the ARB air-locker.

I think you should be able to tackle it with the help of the mechanic you mentioned without any major problems.

I just now read the post by Punk about him volunteering to wheel with you and act as a spotter. If you are really wanting to find out what a stock xterra can do... get with him. With an experienced spotter, he can teach you a lot of things to watch for and plus he already knows your limitations.

And if you exceed those limitations... well I think Punk's xterra MIGHT be capable of pulling you out. hahaha:mocking:

That sounds like a plan. Already been pulled out by a Ford (not the greatest day of my life) so getting pulled out by another X is way better than a Ford any day. I think i'll wait for the weather to break. Don't mind getting stuck but getting stuck in almost frozen mud might not be all that much fun.

Punk. How far are you from Rausch Creek?

Don't feel bad. My buddy had to pull me out with his XJ. It was the only time I've ever been stuck. He wouldn't let me or anyone else forget about it for the next 3 weeks.:pullout:

Hi and welcome! The folks here are really great and it looks like you are pretty much set up well to go check out what your X can do. It'd be cool to see pics.

Are you an Eagles fan?

I am in the Wilkes-Barre area (Dallas) and I am about 1 hour from Rausch Creek. I am going to be going in early april hopefully to do an easy run to make sure everything is working this year after sitting all winter and doing a bunch of mods. I will let you know the date when I get it.
