Hey Guys,
When I turn sharp to the left (mostly when making a U turn),
I hear this nasty clunk..pop...grind..squeak noise....Does anyone know what this could be? The truck has 98k and I just got new tires.
I am just trying to figure out what this could be so my tires don't wear all crazy.
Also I think the rear axle gasket is leaking....any idea of the price range to fix that? I hate taking the truck the shop. They seem to think because I am a woman, they can rake me over the coals!! It would be nice to have an idea so I don't get ripped off. I need to learn how to do this stuff myself!

The nasty clunk is more than likely just your steering stops so no worries on that. Mine does the same thing on sharp turns. I'm almost positive that's what it is and you shouldn't worry too much about it. Annoying yes but damaging... no.

Maybe James or Allen can step in for advice on your leak. That one goes a little beyond my experiences so far. But with a little help from the guys/gals here, I'm sure it could be done yourself and you can tell those sexist mechs to go ____ themselves. hahaha

the noise when turning is from your turn stops
all the turn stops are; are bolts that used to have lil plastic caps on them, when the bolt hits the lower control arm, thats when you cant turn the steering wheel anymore, the purpose of the plasitc cap is so they dont make noise
just rub a lil grease on there and it will stop the noise, you will have to re apply the grease in the future, but its nothign to worry about at all

edit: bastard drake beat me to it

YOU COULD ALSO MAKE "NEW" end caps with "the right stuff"
which is a paste/caulk like stuff that turns into rubber

The others have you covered. Glad you found out how to post.

Tina, before even discussing taking something into the mechanic, just tighten up your diff cover.

Also, you can adjust the turn stops a tad.

Yep, steering stops for sure. Even my '81 Datsun did this, nothing to worry about.

Don't we have 3rd member H233B rear ends? Do you guys have something else with a diff cover?

It sounds like the steering stop(s) are well covered. For the rear axle gasket see if you can have the bolts nipped up a bit. I would suggest anymore than 0.5 hours labor is a rippoff. If you have the gasket replaced then I would suggest a cost of around $20 for the gasket and oil and an hours labor.
Please note I am not a mechanic so I could be way out on a limb here, but that is what I would expect from performing my own work on my vehicles. If it's the pinion seal then that's a whole other issue.

Whatever you got that's thick and sticky, it'll last longer. I used to put axle grease on my Datsun's stops.

People always seem to recommend Mobil 1 general purpose grease. I am a fan of this

Then they couldn't even show me where the lube was....
Helllo losers, needless to say I left with nothing!!:aufkopfhauen-big:

Tina, can you give me a phone number for that store? I need to rip them a new ass. I haven't been in the Navy for a while and these folks deserve it. Do you have names and stuff? I really really want to do this. It pisses me off.

HA HA that would be grrreat LOL!
I do not have any names but I was in there at about 5:30ish, Friday the 21st. First I asked a girl, and she pawned me off on a black dude, and then he went and got a young white dude that looked like a team lead.....all were a bunch of dumb asses! They were all looking at me like I was dumb!

Alright Tina, go ahead and go back in and talk to Jeff. Tell him that James sent you, he knows that you are coming and he said that he will take care of you. I was on the phone with him for about 10 minutes explaining the situation. He is the store technician and the manager. He seems like a very understanding guy and he was really cool. He wants you to ask specifically for him.

You might have some free grease!!!! Haha!
