Only to engage the hubs. Once the hubs are engaged then you can shift between 2WD and 4WD. Granted not at normal driving speeds. But if you are off road and know you will be needing 4WD at some point, you can engage them then.

its also goo for if you are driving in snow you can run in 2wd but if it gets slick or somthing you can switch with no problem.... i am swaping to manual hubs on the pathy when i get a chance....

would my bearings be at any risk...??????
Yes. If metal pieces start breaking off of the hub, they can start falling into the bearing and getting ground up. That's not good.

Ever heard of car-part.com? I would think you could get it a lot cheaper there...

Yep, just checked. Looks like you ought to be able to get one for about $50. If you're lucky, you can find one near you and won't have to pay shipping.

Any chance you can get some good pics of the failed part?

Just to name a few. I don't think they would charge more than $20 to ship, should be less. Call around to a few of them, till you find someone you like that sounds like they'll help you out. Be explicit on what the part includes, and what it comes with. I don't know what these look like when they come apart, but a lot of manual hubs kinda come in two pieces, and some places will sell just the end cap. That's probably not the case with these though. Call around tomorrow, good luck.

Oh yeah, and a lot of places will give like a 30 day or so warranty. It ain't a lot, but it's enough time for you to get it installed and make sure it works. Just something to remember to ask about.

Personally I'd go with the manual hubs and NOT unlock them for 2wd if it's between snow storms.

Derek, Derek, Derek.......

This is the point where you say, I am gonna call James. Maybe he knows someone who is selling their auto hubs? Oh and they do not go out easy either. By the way, I have the specific tool to do this at my place. We will service both of your wheel bearings at the same time. Sound like a deal?

If you want to stick with auto, you can find them easy.

Do some searching first dude, you will save soooooo much money.

For example-http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NISSAN-FRONTIER-XTERRA-AUTOMATIC-LOCKING-AXLE-HUB_W0QQitemZ260201567192QQcmdZViewItem

SLOW DOWN!!!!!

Call a brother up and we will see if you even need one first.

Hey, while we're on the subject, where's the best place to get one of those spindle nut sockets? I don't know what the nut looks like yet, so don't know which tool I'll need. I wouldn't mind cleaning out those flooded wheel bearings though...
