: click/pop and went dead... won't start

This is great to see this part of the forum after what happened this morning. This morning I went out to start my 2001 X. I leave at 5:30 so it is dark. When I got in the Truck I went ahead and locked the doors because it is so dark and then put the key in and tried to start it. For a split second everything started to light up like it always does but then I heard a click/pop like sound and everything went dead. I have never experienced anything like this before. I tried to turn the key again and nothing. No power anywhere. Had to unlock and lock the doors manually. This was the first time I have locked the doors before putting the key in and wasn't sure if it is security related? The remote wouldn't do anything after this happened.

Any ideas what this may be and how to troubleshoot it? Thanks!

Sounds like you blew a fuse. I would check them first. The main power fuses are under the hood near the battery on a 1st gen.

Thanks for the quick reply. I sure hope it is as easy as that. I guess i just open the fuse box and start pulling fuses until i find a blown one or is there an easier way to find the one?

Think systematically, Start from the battery fuse since there's no juiice and work your way forward. If this post isn't too late. Good luck!!!!

That sounds EXACTLY like what happened to me. But for me it was corrosion on the battery terminals. Went to start the truck and the motor turned over for a split second then a pop and . . . nothing, no lights and no power. Cleaned the battery post and it started right up. Good luck.

I hope it is that easy too... Going to check these out when i get back home.

Like abustheelderly said, check the battery for corrosion/loose connection. The starter pulls a good amount of current, so the pop could have been enough path for current to arc between the post and connection once and that was that (ie the path got scortched and is unable to arc there again). If you have a multimeter, measure the DC voltage between the actual posts, then measure between the two terminal connectors. Both should read the same.. if the terminals are lower than you have crap between the terminal connectors and posts (or one is loose)

Then move onto your fuses.

Well, it turned out to be the the battery coonector was loose. I need to get this replaced but it is working for now. I wonder if this has been the cause of a occasional rough idle and a bucking sometimes when lifting completely off the accelerator?

Im really glad you found the culprit. And it is possible for that to cause bucking, as sometimes when I let off my accelerator th rpm's will drop slightly below idle, then level out. This could be below the rpm threshold of the alternator. If the conection on the battery is bad and the alternator stops generating electricity the spark plugs don't fire hot enough. Last time my alternator died, my truck started bucking before it died. Just something to think about. Good thing it was something simple, congrats.

That's good to know. If it won't start or is having trouble in the future i'll remember to look there. Thanks
