Hey guys..I am in the early process of deciding exactly what I am going to have to buy for my new Xterra..well it isn't new.. Its a 2002 4x4 SE and I think I am probably going to paint it black..the main thing is the rims wheels will be black..

Anyways I am interested in buying affordable all terrain tires..I know alot of people are fond of the BF AT KO tires..I checked em out..very very nice..apparantly they are like 1200 bucks for all 4..fuck that noise..can I get anything that looks comparable and is pretty good craftsmanship for 1/2 - 3/4 that price?

Also..what can I fit in these models without cutting too much?

Another thing..where can I get wheel spacers in Canada? I'd be willing to go to Upstate NY to get them if I have to..I want the wheels to stick out a bit..nothing dramatic but I want a bit of a wider stance..a meaner look..

Any help would be much appreciated.

Some people arent too keen on the idea, but you can go with retreads.

I run Treadwright retreads and Ive never had a problem. I have the "Guard Dog" mud terrain tread, however they have a series called the "Warden" that has the same tread pattern as the BFG AT KO. They cost a little under half that of the real thing
https://www.treadwright.com/p-9-31-10-50r15-warden-a-t.aspx

Dont let naysayers turn you off. There has only been 1 negative review of treadwright's tires.
There was even year long test done by moabjeeper on youtube.
They are the first 2 links in this page here as well as other reviews: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=treadwright&aq=f

I have loved mine and never had problems at all. I know there was a group by on thenewx and several members love them (Rook and blckhawk13 to name two..).
As far as tires, I rep treadwright.

Other than that you can either look for used tires or hunt for a deal. Walmart has some called the Goodyear Wrangler Authority, but those tend to wear funny and chunk easily.

Wheels are whatever you want them to be as long as they fit properly. I personally love my Cragar Soft 8's. They look good, they are $65 a wheel, and they are steel (so if they get damaged on a trail you can hammer it out or have a shop bend it back. Alloys would just crack or shatter). These are mostly up to you. If you really want to save money, you can paint them. Most just black them out. There is a DIY thread on the subject.

Not to shoot you down drew but did you see the thread Dave just posted about retreads with 10,000 miles on then and the side wall was all messed up?
You take the risk of a blow out with retreads but there cheaper, and remember you get what you pay for... Also your paying for peace of mind if you get normal tires and not retreads

Both of you have good points...being a cheap mofo though...i think i might go with the BF KO retread pattern..i mean..with cheap tires, alot of the treads look like shit anyway right?

Now, I know almost everybody here swears by BFG, but I'm quite happy with my cheaper Yokohamas. There are 3 or 4 of us that run Yokohama A/T's. Mine are 31" and there is no rub that I notice. I've run Yokohamas on an F150 in the past and they've worn for at least 50k miles to date. So far, they're still going strong. They'll run about $750 after installation. Additionally, they come with a 50k mile tread warranty.

You can fit 32x11.5x15 with a PML easy. Might be able to do it on stock suspension, but you'll need to do some trimming and you'll rub on close to full compression up front.

I don't know how soon you need tires, but I'd wait for a buy 3 get 1 for free deal. They happen pretty regularly. Also, what size tires are you looking at that are $1200 for all for BFG A/T? I paid a bit under $900 for a full set of 32x11.5.x15 BFG M/T KM2's and I believe they're a more expensive tires as well. That included a lifetime tire warranty, and wasn't even during the get 1 free special.

Also think long term and performance. I wouldn't say BFG's are the best performing tire, but when you consider treadlife vs performance, I don't think there's any better. I had a set of BFG A/T's and put about 60k miles on them and the only reason I got rid of them is cause they started to dry rot due to age. Still had about 1/4 of the tread left. I'm running the MT KM2's now, have had them for about 2 years and 30k miles, still has maybe 65% tread left. Performance wise, they handle great and I've only been stuck once (forced to stop while hooning around a parking lot with 4' of virgin snow).

Tires are the last thing you should ever skimp on. It's the only thing between your car and the road.

The wheels on mine have are16x8 ( 4.5 backspace) and set the tires out nicely. As far as my tires go ive got 265/75/16 cooper discover stts. Be warned ur gonna have some trimmin to do. I have had my front torsion bars raised so i had less trimmin but u can fit that combo and it looks awesome. Off-road though mine do scrub on full compression but a body lift will fix that.

fyi sidegrinder works great for trimmin ur fenders

Could I fit the 32" outside diameter in a stock non-lifted SE 2002 4x4? I don't know anything about tires guys im sorry..im a fucking noobie..i know how to change em' and all that..but I don't know the full compression stff you guys are saying..

I want to get the biggest tire possible without doing too much..I also want to get spacers so they stick out and give me a wider stance..im sure that will case the tire to touch the fender easier eh?

You could fit a 32 with pretty minimal trimming- plastic only- with stock-backspaced wheels and no wheel spacers. If you lower the backspace or add spacers, the amount of trimming will go up... quite possibly into the metal.

A PML does nothing to allow bigger tires. A compressed tire (or stuffed) means it is pushed up into the wheel well, which is when rubbing will be worst, especially if turning.

So you have to decide if you're ok cutting into your fenders. If not, and you still want the wider stance, you'll have to stick with 31s.

You should check out Kelly Safari Tsr's. I love mine and they were quite a bit cheaper while still a great tire!

man u should have minimal trimmin if u stuff a 32 under there as long as its on factory rims with no wheel spacers.

When i got my cooper doscovers they fit with no rubbing on the factory wheels. Now when i swapped to the gear alloy wheels i had some serious rubbing issues.

Factory wheels (16s): 16x7 w/ 5.5 in backspace
Gear alloys blackjacks: 16x8 w/ 4.5 in backspace

in my opion i wouldnt get the wheelspacers but if u do these guys on here can help u make it work.

this thread has some good picts of x's with 32s

If you are looking to get new wheels as well, I would go with 15" rims with 4.75-5" of BS. The tires to fit them are much cheaper. I had 32" BFG ATs on with my rims(4.75" BS) and they rubbed a little and there was no lift. I'm not sure where you were looking at BFGs that expensive, but I suggest shopping around.

These are $179 each
