Hi,
I just bought I xterra 2001 SE 2wd, and I did a check of the car with a mechanician, and everything was ok. The car has 99k miles, and I was wondering what kind of maintenance I should do now, because the old owner told me that he changed the transmission oil and timing belt, but he wasn't sure about the differential oil. Usually every how many miles does it need to be changed? Do you have any suggestion?

thanks for your help

I think it is recommended that your a/t and differential fluids are to be changed every 30K so it might be good to check on that. Your owner's manual should state the maintenance schedule I thought but I could be wrong. May not hurt to change out your spark plugs either.

When in doubt... change it out.

Changing the rear diff fluid is easy. You'll need a 1/2" breaker bar (cheap at any parts store) and new diff fluid.

Use a GL-5 compliant fluid, Valvoline 75W-90 or 80W-90 would work great.

Check your fuel filter, if it looks old, then replace it. It's easily overlooked and often half plugged anyway.

Spark plugs, probably needs them if they haven't been changed. Use NGK brand only. You might even check what's in there if they have been changed. If they're not NGK, then change them out! Trust us on that one.

Check that all of your lights work! Just turn them all on and walk around the truck. Often, there's a clearance light or 2 that don't work (bulbs burnt out) and they go unnoticed forever.

Check the tires! Are they new? If so, then get an alignment. Tell them to check the ride height, as with that many miles, the front end has probably sagged a bit. That will throw off the alignment and headlights will be aimed too low. If the tires are older, see if the wear is even across the width of the tire. If it's not, then again, get an alignment and mention the ride height.

Other than that, enjoy the ride!

It is up above the fuel tank right next to a frame rail. It is an easy fix but it is tight in there. I definitely recommend a stubby phillips head screwdriver and I believe it is either an 8mm or a 10mm.

Personally when I do it, I break the hoses first, then slip the new filter on. Next, I remove the clamp off of the old one and put the new one in it's place
