: new tires
pwulfing 07-29-2011, 11:09 AM it's getting to be that time of the year where i need new tires. talked to a couple people, both recommended bridgestone duelers...except they're pretty pricey. around 900 range. anybody have a different recommendation for some new tires, or is this price range fairly common for tires on an X?
aagill225 07-29-2011, 12:32 PM This is gonna sound cheap, but I purchased my tires from Wal-Mart. They are Goodyear Wrangler Authority. I was sceptical at first but I love them. My off-roading is moderate and the tire perform better than expected. They have a nice aggressive tread pattern and are quiet on the road. I have had them for three years and the wear on them is quite even, better than the BFG AT I had on last. I paid around $650 for 4 31x10.5r15.

Anyone else running these?
zcarlberg 07-29-2011, 01:24 PM I am running these as well. I've had them since November. Haven't taken them offroad yet...
bryanmc57 07-29-2011, 02:45 PM I just put on a set of 31x10.50x15 Yokahama Geolander AT/S on my X. Cost me $684 out the door with road hazard warranty. Really like them so far.
assassin_works 07-29-2011, 03:48 PM im running 33 x 12.5 x 15 federal couragiahttp://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii132/urbanswat/MT.jpg
quietest mud tire i have ever seen
drbandkgb 07-29-2011, 03:58 PM Do some research on those Walmart tires.. Ask your self how does Walmart get Goodyear to build a tires so cheap? They leave some things out..
These have been all over the web with guys having major issues with them..
Tire's are the one thing you dont want to be cheap on.. Nothing like heading down the Highway at 75mph and have a tire blow out..
Walmart is the one place ill NEVER buy tires from..

i agree with that
phrog man 07-29-2011, 04:38 PM well it looks nice. i guess ill buy one for wall decor!
aagill225 07-29-2011, 05:19 PM :talk2much::talk2much::talk2much::talk2much:i like them. have not had any issues with them at all. I run them in sand, mud, rocks and snow. Even down to 12 psi and have had no issues at all. Perhaps they are running them at to low psi at 75mph. Just a guess though.
I did recently look at comparing other brands as well. The wrangler Dura-trak and BFG mt. I don't remember whick but one was 11lbs lighter than the other and that translates into 44lbs less mass you 3.3l has to push.
Also I worked at a place that really liked the Yokohama Geo. they are not a bad tire at all and they are cheap too. So maybe they are missing as much as walmart tire are. You can get a road hazard and liftime balance, too.
And fedaral probably fit in the same catagory as Walmart and Yoko.
It ultimatly depends on your driving habits and how well you maitain proper balance cycle.
I ran Big-O XT on my wrangler for 5 years and the dealer told my I wouldn't get two years out of them driving 3000 mile a month + off roading.
I personaly do not like BFG at they cake with mud and flat out sucked in the snow in Flagstaff, AZ.
The Dunlop MT get great review other than how fast they wear out.
A good baseline is:
Find a tread patern you like and research the tire weight. Find the highest quality/weight and give it a go.
everyone here gives great advise and everyone drives differant.
I have put 20k on my Wally World tires, I rotate the every 5k, and check tire preassure regularly.
One thing I will say, if you do go with Walmart watch the tire tech. The one in Page, AZ did not air down the tire before he broke the bead and tore the sidewall of my BFG.

It's all about picking tires for what you drive in. I hate mud, and have a different set of tires for the winter, and I love my BFG MT KM2s on the rocks.
02 SE SC 4X4 07-29-2011, 08:04 PM if 900 bucks is pricey to you, check out Nitto's terra-grapplers. nice tires for around 600.
Coxterra 08-02-2011, 09:01 AM I have had the Geolander ATS, BFG AT, and GY Duratracs. The Geolanders were nothing to brag about. The BFG and Duratracs are both a great all around tire. The Duratracs handle great in the snow and mud and don't cake as bad as the BFG ATs. I see pwulfing is in Denver, so a tire that fairs well in the snow isn't a bad idea. You should pick a tire for what you plan to do with it though.
Shop around for tire prices. Check out Discount Tire Direct and other sites and then go into a store and have them match your price. Also look for rebates. You can find some great deals that way.
BigAsian 08-02-2011, 03:38 PM Like drb mentioned, tires are the last thing you ever want to cheap out on. Doesn't matter what you have done to your ride, the only thing connecting it to the road are the tires. Can't stress this enough to everyone I know.
I'm a huge BFG fan because they last forever and perform very well. I used to run BGF A/T KO's and they were awesome. Didn't get into anything too messy besides some heavy snow, but I could easily go 2wd in places that the stock Long Trails struggled with in 4wd. Lasted me 7 years and still had good tread. The only reason I had to get rid of them is because they began to dry rot, which is completely understandable.
Now running BFG M/T KM2's. LOVE them. Still great tread with about about 2 years of wear, looks fantastic, has never leaked air, and of course performs well. Handing and braking took a dive compared to the all terrains, but that's the usual trade off. Everyone is surprised how well she handles with aggressive mud tires and all.
BFG's can be pricey, but with how long they wear you'll be saving money in the long run.
