any 00-04 might have a limited slip...no auto locking diff. limited slips are identified by an orange sticker on rear of rear axle. They help a little when offroading. Arb is your only option right now. Installed You are looking at around 1000-1500 per axle. Sorry what is VDC?
As for the 4runner....the later years are better, the early years had head cracking issues.
I would recommend the x over the toyota though for operating costs. You can get more parts for an x more readily and cheaper than a 4runner. They are both IFS. If you are really into offroading I would start with a solid axle platform instead....just better IMHO.

No Xterra has ever left the factory with an automatic locker. The 05-present is available with a selectable locker. I have an '03 X, and an '01 4Runner. Overall, the 4Runner is definitely a better truck. It has a much peppier engine, better suspension, AWD mode in the T-case, much better mileage, and lots of features that the X lacks. I believe the 4Runner was also available with a selectable locking rear diff somewhere around 98-2000. Even if you can't find one of those, the center section from a TRD Tacoma should be a direct swap. Don't take my word on this, as I haven't spent much time with the Toyota stuff. There is definitely a LOT more aftermarket for the 4Runner than the X. The X is a good, solid rig, but if you look around you will see that they are almost all built exactly the same because the aftermarket is so small. It's pretty much either follow the existing blueprint, or build everything custom.
