: SAS: Calmini vs. Custom
mgblanke 03-05-2008, 08:18 AM So just wanted to hear from anyone who has done or knows anyone that has done an SAS (cyclemut?) Im just kinda curious who has used the Calmini or who has done custom...bcuz i have heard the Calmini SAS SUCKS!!! Everyone i have talked to says go custom with leaf springs. However my X is my daily driver and i need some advice...i dont want to drop 3000(at least!!!) on the Calmini and then not be satisfied wiht how big it is! At least with leaf springs you can get different ones made and go bigger...any ideas or advice?!?
Ricer-X 03-05-2008, 08:29 AM i have no sas, but i know calmini's customer service is horrid
and its way more than $3000 friend, dont forget your sway bar and coilovers
i estimate you are looking at over $4k for calmini's setup, not counting the wagoneer axle
mgblanke 03-05-2008, 08:48 AM yea thats what i was fearing....thats WAY to much...when i think i could do it for like 2k if i did custom...
soccerbrace 03-05-2008, 10:05 AM Going custom with mine, I refuse to give Calmini my business unless I have to.
Aretelio 03-05-2008, 11:11 AM So how exactly do you go about piecing together a custom axle swap?
iExploreX 03-05-2008, 11:26 AM Im not sure, but Ive heard that piecing one together(the right way) can cost up to $10K. Be sure that this(SAS) is what you want to do. You have to ask yourself " is it worth it for ME".
and go bigger
Bigger isn't always better.
Keep in mind that Im not saying don't do it, Im just saying be careful.........

soccerbrace 03-05-2008, 11:29 AM Well it depends on what you get. If you can score parts for cheaper, you might even spend less. Especially if you have handy dandy friends.

Heh, like an entire shop filled with Nissan techs?
soccerbrace 03-05-2008, 11:52 AM Not even! All you need is engenuity and friends who have welding stuff. Labor can be free with the right friends.
strikedistance 03-05-2008, 12:07 PM Dont go calmini SAS if its a daily driver. Thats why im not doing it anymore.

pvfjr 03-05-2008, 01:33 PM Oh, and yeah, I did a SAS on an S10 once myself, and I MADE money doing it! Just gotta be resourceful. Here's a couple shots. Hope that makes my opinions worth something. :)

Which one is SAS'ed? And how did you make money?
json3904 03-05-2008, 05:32 PM i bet you ate up the outside of the tire pretty bad huh?????

Both.:mocking: Actually, the small one is now the prototype truck for 3 Leaf Fab. It's under the knife for a SAS right now.
I made money by buying a Wagoneer for $212, parting it for over $500 after taking the axles and everything I needed. Then I sold the stuff I pulled out of the S10, including the IFS lift that it used to have.

You talking about the fender? It actually didn't rub. Just came real close, had just the right clearance. Stuffed up in there just right.
json3904 03-05-2008, 10:40 PM I'm talking about the angle they are sitting..... they lean outwards.... which will eat up the outside of the tire....
pvfjr 03-05-2008, 10:54 PM Ah, in the bottom pic. It's an illusion, they're straight. Straight as can be, straight as a straight axle. Had new ball joints and an alignment. The tires are turned a bit, which puts the balljoint inclination into effect and makes it look cambered out. It's on uneven ground too, that yard was far from flat.
json3904 03-05-2008, 11:15 PM lol
mgblanke 03-06-2008, 12:54 AM Yea im going to piece it together...just takes time and money...guy i know did it for 1500 and is running 37s
