: Bald Xterra!! need repair advice
arterra 03-04-2008, 12:27 AM Ok so long story short, Xterra and parking garages do not mix. My roof rack was torn from it's roots with the nut rivets ripped out of their holes. The holes are intact but somewhat deformed. I need to replace the rack but my question is regarding my mounting options. How does one repair these holes so that I can replace the nut rivets where my new rack can be bolted and how do i ensure that my rack will fit snug and tight (i always hear about people with loose rattling racks and now i feel it is inevitable.
Also, while I wait for my new rack in the mail, what preventative things should i do with the open holes and this wet spring weather, to avoid further damage? Thanks in advance guys.
bobber 03-04-2008, 02:14 AM Wow, pictures, we need pictures!
I suppose some silicone caulk would seal the holes pretty good. Easy to remove later too.
Just how tall is the vehicle? Now I have to go out and measure mine for peace of mind. I have the OR w/18 tires and you have me thinking about where I can park it now!
Good luck!
Cyclemut 03-04-2008, 06:57 AM When you get the new rivnuts/nutserts, install them with a washer on the back side of the roof metal. You might have to get a smaller washer and drill it out the correct size hole.
You'll have to pull the headliner, and probably still get a little creative with holding the washer and installing the rivnuts at the same time.
That hurts! But I feel your pain. There are places that I simply can't go. I wish my roof rack had the ability to be torn off, but since it's part of my cage... :D
arterra 03-04-2008, 03:18 PM thanks cyclemut, that helps a lot. Stupid question but how does one remove the headliner?
Ricer-X 03-04-2008, 03:42 PM knock your rearview mirro off, it will pull the front down if you have the temp/compass/auto dim one
mine yanked the front of my headliner down when it fell off my windshield, while i was chilling in my truck parked in the driveway, thats right IT FELL OFF, JUST FELL OFF, IT FELL THE FK OFF
its now held on with JB weld:)
arterra 03-04-2008, 05:05 PM ok, so how about for someone who wants to willingfully take it off, haha
json3904 03-04-2008, 06:52 PM wow that sux..... i always check to see if i have the clearance if i have any doubt... i guess that's cause i drive big trucks for a living and the height is often a problem.. LOL
arterra 03-04-2008, 07:29 PM don't get me wrong, i too double check height clearance. I cleared the initial entrance with flying colors. Didnt expect the one spot i choose out all of them to be the one that is low clearance due to an elevator shaft or something. Honestly the odds of this was unbelievably low. Had i not backed in, i would have seen it.
json3904 03-04-2008, 07:59 PM well in that case talk to the garage people.... it should be there fault since they had a low hanging ceiling and it wasn't marked,... and since you cleared the first height notifier you thought you would be good all through out there establishment.... i have a secret message for you, can you see it......
you get my drift?????? make them reimburse you for there mistake... LOL
arterra 03-04-2008, 11:52 PM Do 00-01 racks fit on the 02 x? Is there anything different other than the windfairing style?
Also, can my wind fairing (2002) fit onto the older 00-01 rack?
soccerbrace 03-05-2008, 04:32 AM headliner is simple. Nutserts suck and the tool isn't cheap
json3904 03-05-2008, 05:10 PM i think the rack is the same.. and i realy dont know if the wind thingy will swap over... this sat i will look since i will have mine and ricers side by side...
