I like my stock wheels on my 08' X, and I really don't want to shell out $600 for wheels right now, but I think a black wheel would be shazam.
So, I was wondering if I just could have the tires dismounted from the wheels and take the wheels to a powder coater in my area and have them coated.
Is the powder coating durable enough for 4x4 use? Is this a good idea or should I just save and go with some black wheels in the future?
Any other suggestions?

Yes you can do it, yes it's a good idea, and yes it's durable enough for 4x4 use. A lot of the wheels you buy now are powder coated anyway. Ask about a finish called black chrome if you talk to a power coater, and see if they can show you an example of it. I think it'd look sick on a set of rims.

Pvfjr is correct. I'm also thinking of powder coating my rims. I just need a donor set of rims to run while they're out.
And you can get creative with the powder coating. I'm thinking of a black chrome on mine. It's actually a powder coating that recently came out. Black anodized can look hot as well.

Be sure and ask the right question about the type of paint powder they use.... Check with your local cycle shop for a good reff....

I got my wheels (different car) sandblasted and powder coated for $200. On average it's $200-300 for a set of wheels.
Keep in mind you do need to remove the tires.
