: help, trailer lights not activating
idealflaw 03-02-2008, 01:54 PM hey guys, i installed the towing package myself using the 55 dollar wiring harness, followed instructions (as far as I could understand) and I can't get my trailer's brake lights or turn signals to activate.
am I missing something here? I lifted up my passenger side door plastic and installed those other thingies too... still nothing..
any ideas?
anyone else solve this?
do i need to do something else with the battery or something?
Cyclemut 03-02-2008, 04:56 PM Isn't there an extra relay or something to get it working? A fuse or 2?
Did the harness come with instructions?
soccerbrace 03-02-2008, 05:20 PM Post pics maybe, or use paint and draw us a diagram. Maybe you could scan the instructions for us.
json3904 03-02-2008, 05:55 PM your X didnt have the plug in the back?????? there is a plug on the pass side rear of the X so you can plug the harness into it.... i will try to find the site that sells them.......
on another note ricer had a harness put into his X ( he couldnt find the harness i was talking about local ) and he cought hell trying to get it to work.... maby he can chime in and help out.....
idealflaw 03-02-2008, 07:15 PM I would love to hear what he has to say. I followed the instructions to the word. There are 2 connectors under the drivers-side section behind the hitch.
Then, you lift up a passenger side door floorboard to access and apply a cable with 2 jumpers on it, one brown and one blue (blue attached to the wires with the white tape wrapped around it).
Still no luck. Checked all fuses - from the looks of them, brand new. Usually when fuses are blown, they're very visibly blown... these are in tip-top shape.
I am going mad with this..
p.s., if the nissan dealership charges me a dime for this, I'm going to tea-bag the manager until he dies.
json3904 03-02-2008, 07:43 PM well here is the harness i was talking about.... why dont you use it instead????????

if im not mistaken all 1st gen modles came with the plug under the rear on the pass side.....
idealflaw 03-02-2008, 08:17 PM well, I have a 2007 xterra so not sure if the gen 1 stuff is applicable.
also, since I spent 60 dollars on this, I'm committed. It SHOULD work.
Aretelio 03-03-2008, 07:07 AM Well, for the Titan if you didn't order it with the "Big Tow" package it came without a couple necessary relays. None of us knew that at the time so people would come in and order trailer hitches, take them home to put them on and then wonder why none of their lights worked.
It wasn't until a month or so later that we figured all of that out and realized that the customer had to buy those couple relays.
Nissan later changed the accessory lists to include that information.
On the Gen 2 Xterra on FAST they list the relays in almost exactly the same way that they do the Titans. And just like the Titans they don't instruct you to order relays in the accessory lists.
My thinking on this is: Nissan includes those relays with the accessory hitch kit. If you didn't buy your hitch from a dealer it's likely you didn't get the relays.
If I were you I'd open up the relay box under the hood and check to see if you've got the necessary turn signal relays in it. If not go pick two of them up and see if that works.
Here's an illustration with the p/n:

Cyclemut 03-03-2008, 06:57 PM And the winner is... Aretelio!
It's the same as my '05 Frontier. Need to get the relays in, or else it won't work.
jbsimm2 05-08-2009, 08:59 AM I am having this same problem. I went to check the wiring because I am towing a trailer this weekend. there is already a four flat plug in but when I hooked it to the trailer, I got now lights or turn signals. I traced the wiring back and there is a box that says relay on it. I checked with a volt meter and I am getting voltage back there. this is for a 2000 xterra
also who ever put this wiring harness in got the green and yellow wires mixed up. so if it ever worked, when they put on their left blinker, the right blinker would flash on the trailer.
Creepy Cruiser 05-08-2009, 11:12 AM Someone on here just had this same problem, and for some odd reason, they had to use the 3rd relay that the harness comes with even though it was an automatic and not a stick. If you do a quicky search you should be able to find the thread. If I find it I'll post the link.
jbsimm2 05-08-2009, 01:59 PM I didn't buy the harness, It was on there when I bought the truck. also mine is a manual. It looks like the harness that is on there was spliced in down the line somewhere, instead of being plugged in. it has the relay/converter box on it.
as I said it was also wired backwards.
jbsimm2 05-11-2009, 09:56 AM Ok, I got a new connector and spliced it onto the harness (switching the yellow and green wires). I checked with a multi meter and I am getting voltage.
I hooked it up to my trailer and I have brake lights, and tail lights. the blinkers both work. the weird thing is, if I have the vehicle lights on, or if I have the brakes on, both blinkers blink instead of which ever one I have activated.
I have no Idea where to check next. I think after I get back from this camp trip this weekend, I am gonna take it into a place and have the whole trailer wiring redone, and maybe have them add the trailer brake I have, but never installed at the same time.
