Does anyone have experiance with the Garmin Nuvi 260 (or simular) dash mounted GPS units? I was pondering one of these for my X.

My wheeling partner uses a Garmin but I can't remember the exact model of his but they work great. We were in a really remote area in Tennessee (queue the Deliverance song) and it helped us get to food, gas and even an abandoned fire tower. I was impressed.

Are they easy to use while driving?

That I can't tell ya. He would always take his gps out while we were stopped on a trail whenever he used it. I do believe I remember hearing him over the cb saying he was using it while we were on a trail though now that I think about it.

As far as that particular GPS, I can't give you an opinion, but I can say that I am really impressed with how much it picks up. There are places and you are like "holy schmuckatelli!" because you are so surprised at what it can do.
My advice is to make sure it was made recently. One gripe I have is that mine is probably a couple of years old. Not that 2 is an old age, but there is a lot of new construction and new roads being built constantly. Because of this, It is important that you get one that will recognize a new housing development, a new road, etc.etc.
You get it. I know you do.
I am going to have to get another in a year or so. I used to use the suction cup mount but in the cold CO weather, it falls off the windshield a lot. I got one of those adhesive sticky pads that are intended for I-pods, cut it in half, and stuck one half on the bottom of the "pocket" and another on the top. This pocket that I speak of is right below your head unit. Works really well, and only moves when I want it to.

I have to tell you, once you get one and use it you'll wonder why you waited so long. These things are amazing and absolutely worth getting.
I have an earlier thread about hiding a portable unit in the shelf area above your dash.

I have the whole set up for my X. The housing is about $100 and you can only use it with the 750, 755,760,765,780,785. There's some people on thenewx.com that have modified it for the 250,355,260,265

I have a Garmin Nuvi 205 and I couldn't be more impressed. It has great reception, great maps (Navtech maybe?), and a super easy to use interface. I use the suction mount- it does drop for significant temperature changes but otherwise it's fine. Cleaning your mounting spot is really important. For wiring, I installed a new 12v outlet off of the one on the dash and put it in the back, bottom of the center instrument panel area. I just plug it in there, and snake the wire above the pedals and up the left side of the dash. Of course, tie wraps were needed to keep it from interfering with the pedals. When I get a chance, I'll post a thread on it.
