Driving on my street, no other issues, no previous problems. No upgrades, standard 2006 Xterra, nothing fancy. Slowing down at stop sign and it died. All power indications seemed to be working properly, battery is less than 6 months old. When stopped working, tried to turn it over but still nothing. Tried to crank over, sounded like it was trying but couldn't do it. Battery is good, don't believe it to be the alternator. I am thinking fuel system issues. Not sure where to start though, when i tried to turn it over it smells like fuel, almost to point of someone trying to start a car with their foot on the gas and it not starting like it was flooding the engine. Any ideas?

Could be a long shot, but a similar thing happened with my 2006 Nissan Altima. It turned out that one of the cam sensors was bad, and the ECU keeps the engine from running if the cam sensor doesn't think the cam is turning while the crank is turning (broken timing chain). I replaced the sensor, and she fired right up. Do you have the Service Engine Light on? If you can, go get it scanned. I saved a bunch of money doing it myself... it was one bolt, and an electrical plug. Just reset the Service Engine light and your golden.

What I thought was the fuel pump was bad but when I went to test it by turning the ignition to the on position to listen for the charging sound I saw fuel coming from the line. This question is 2 fold, 1 is it difficult to repair a fuel line, 2 would something like this be covered under warranty for the Nissan Certified Pre-Owned?

Not really, and maybe.

Fuel line is fairly straight forward to replace. Is it the rubber line that is leaking, or the hard line? Hard line should probably be done by a professional. If it is the hardline, I would guess the warranty would cover it. Soft line MAY fall under normal wear items, which wouldn't be covered. Best bet would be to get in touch with the dealership. If you decide to replace soft lines, be sure to get proper sized fuel injection hose and proper clamps. Regular carburetted line is not designed for the high pressures that a fuel injection system sees.

I hope yhis helps. Good luck!

Hello new member here myself, glad to be here and learn,

My wife has an 06 Xterra, well maintained, few weeks back, on her way home the car just died on the parkway in peak traffic, was able to start it but couldn't go very far, had to get it towed to dealer, they said it was the cam sensor and fixed it.

This happened 1 month out of warranty :(

Anyways, my question is from here on will the engine be reliable or should we expect other issues. I am worried.

Thanks

This morning my 2006 Nissan Xterra would not start. I think that it may be the fuel pump relay. Any other ideas?

cranking over + fuel+ spark but not starting sounds like that can sensor or a timing belt issue

I just read about a recall where 2005-2006 Xterras just stop and might not be able to start again.
If you haven't had this done it might be your culprit.

NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 ARMADA, TITAN, INFINITI QX56 AND MODEL YEAR 2005-2006 FRONTIER, PATHFINDER AND XTERRA VEHICLES. THE INTELLIGENT POWER DISTRIBUTION MODULE (IPDM) ASSEMBLY CONTAINS AN ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) RELAY THAT HAS A DIODE FOR ELECTRICAL CURRENT NOISE REDUCTION. THE ECM RELAY MAY ALLOW SILICON VAPOR TO FORM AND, OVER TIME, THE SILICON EVAPORATES FROM THE DIODE MOLDING WHICH CAUSES SILICON OXIDE TO DEVELOP ON THE ECM RELAY CONTACT DUE TO ARCING.

Action Needed To Fix It:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ECM RELAY INSIDE THE IPDM ASSEMBLY. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 6, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

I am also guessing cam position sensor!
Glad to hear a recall for it, as I have seen a few here with the same issue!
