The short, simple answer - you can't.

INTAKE, EXHAUST, HEADERS, SUPERCHARGER (oops, just realized my caps were on), chipped ecu, probably some gears. etc...

There are several things you can do to increase performance. But the statement above is partially true in that the X will never be a race car.

Here are just a few things you can do to increase performance.
Remove air intake baffles and resonators to increase air flow
Install headers and high flow exhaust system
To reduce load on the engine, install a electric rad fan
Clean your MAF sensor and TB and air filter.

There is a company that is selling intake manifold spacers for the 1st gen Xterras , but no one here has reported back to say they have installed it and noticed a performance increase, so it is unproven on the Xterra.

Even after all of this, you will pick up MAYBE 20 horses and you'll most likely be in atleast a grand. It will still feel slow...

Basically, your choices for serious change in power are a new xterra (05+) or a new engine (may I suggest small block chevy? diesels have been getting a lot of attention lately, so maybe one of those?).

Buy a 2nd gen. It will feel like a race car compared to the 1st gen...lol

or you could twin turbo it. that'll get you gobs of power, or if you want instant power, nitrous. get ready to spend. hope you have a deep pocket

They don't make chips for the first gen ecu, and any turbo setup would have to be completely custom... which means you'd have to do something about the computer. It could be a pretty pricey setup, although I am all for you giving it a try.

I have a second gen...idk if that matters for a ecu chip

2000-2001 > First Gen
2002-2004 > Gen 1.5 (aren't we cool sounding?! :))
2005+ > Second Gen

Your info says you have an '02, so no you don't. See rjr's post for clarification on that....

I was referring to all Xterras from 00-04 because they are almost identical, with the exception of the front end and the S/C option in the 1.5 gen.

Basically, they DO NOT make a chip for your Xterra. Superchips tried and they said that anytime they tried something, the stock computer would just crap out and it would turn into all kinds of failure.

well, as far as "fast" for an xterra, you'd want to invest in a second gen 2wd with a manual tranny. like what i have. then just do the basic intake and exhaust mods, and you'll be eating civics and integras for breakfast! hell, i've even beaten a tricked-out turboed eclipse off the line! think it was more by sheer surprise than anything, though...

Psh! Dreamkillers. :) First thing's first....weight reduction. Throw your passengers out! Haha. And the listed mods above as well....I'm sure there's more to be done though than just the regular.

www.jimwolftechnology.com also has a few goodies for the VG33E, but at a high price...

My wife normally(cause she has a 2nd gen)just laughs at me when I try to take off fast and then she trys to help us get going by making an engine sound and bouncing in the front seat. The only thing good about this is if she is wearring a low cut shirt I can see her boobies bounce and who doesn't like to see that?

You could go old school rebuild the motor with a longer stroke and bore it out with a bit more compression to get maybe 200hp or save money in the long run and do a v8 swap of your choice.

add stickers, they add a lot of horsepower

Rip everything out...EVERYTHING, even your driver seat. In your now large cargo area add a jet engine.
Fastest Xterra ever. Not fast enough, get a new JDM iVtec motor, clean out the radiation and rust (too soon I'm sorry) and drop it in your engine bay. Remember FWD (only thing cars should have) and get a turbo, nos, and sweet SPOILERRRR

Basically what everyone is trying to say in a nice but appearently funny way...hahaha, is it really is not worth trying to make a 1st Gen X faster. I don't get in any hury and have learned to relax, be patient and "Enjoy the ride" since I have owned my X, And I used to ride sport bikes and have had a few Mustangs so if I can do it I think almost anyone can.

If I'm right increasing Performance will DECREASE your MPG. A stock X gets an average of 14-16MPG. Increasing Power/Airflow/etc... I would say your MPG is going to drop to around 10MPG.

I have a K&N intake and Magnaflow and get over 20 on the highway

You want to go faster? Sell the X and buy a Z.

Nitrous Express wet kit. 150hp jetting. pull 4-5deg timing and put colder plugs in. 10mph to 75mph in under 5 seconds. :D

(that's with 37" tires, a solid axle & no front doors).

And after a few quick take offs you're back to being a slow poke on 37"s ;) well until you spend the next $20 to fill the nitrous (last going rate I saw at track was just over $4/lb.. so that's obviously for a whimpy 5 lb bottle)

I found a mod that works without getting worse mpg, in fact, this modification INCREASES my mpg.

If before the mod, the soonest I could get to a given site was at 2 pm, after the mod, I could get there at 1pm, an entire HOUR sooner.

For me, that's a worthwhile modification!
