hey all - let me give you some background that may or may not have any bearing on my question -

a week ago the truck died on me in the middle of a drive (thankfully at low low speeds and NOT on a highway) - Had it towed to my mechanic (the car would start, but only run for about a minute before dying and it would struggle) turns out it was a recall issue (corroded fuel pump) which a dealership dealt with (and then tried to tell me the truck still wouldn't start cause i needed a new distibuter assembly (the ONLY term i was given as 'internal failure)) not believing them, i had it towed BACK to my mechanic where he found i had a dead battery (it was the original, it was obviously going to go soon!) - battery was replaced, and it ran just fine.

two days later i had it on the highway and suddenly the SES light came on (i hadn't filled up with gas for a week (three tows cuts down on fuel usage, so i knew it wasn't the usual 'gas cap on crooked' trick) ) in addition, three times yesterday (the day the SES light came on) my O/D light blinks maybe a doen times then shuts off only when i start the car up after sitting for a while. (longer than, say, ten minutes (I'm guessing)) -

also, FYI - the truck is sitting at 103k miles so it's getting close to spark plug time - could that go along with the SES?

thoughts? ideas?

thanks in advance

when the ses light comes on put a scanner on it...... that will tell you the problem...... we could sit here all day and try to figure it out but when that scanner gives you the code it is a whole lot easier to figure out what the problem is....

p.s. welcome to the club....

x3 get the codes. Go to the local parts store and ask them to read it for you. It's free and will make life easier for all of us regarding troubleshooting.

json3904, i dont want to get you offended but here is some things you might want to consider....

i never asked for your customization thoughts -

the last thing i wanted to think about when asking for help on this forum was how my personal property would get picked apart. so not to worry - i got rid of the photo so it doesn't bother you anymore (obviously it had to as you just HAD to offer me your wise knowledge) - I'm also glad that the lot of you had ANYTHING to say regarding the overdrive light. i guess i should have skipped all the other info and simply have asked:

"does anyone know if a blinking overdrive light means anything in a 2001 nissan xterra?"

but don't worry yourselves about it - i'm off to find people who will actually listen to my entire question and not focus on the photo posted.

feel free to chalk this all up to my being a bitch, or over sensitive, or whatever makes you feel better, but it's completely my fault for adding the photo - please forgive me, didn't mean to offend with the parts the truck was purchased with OR the magnet on the back.

Personally, I'd keep the magnet. Also, that's the color of my '02 so I like it! My girlfriend insists I keep the step rails until I get my sliders so she can use those instead. So you might wanna keep those ;)

Oh yea, your question. Since you can't drive it (i think that's what was implied) I'll look in my ESM and see if I can find anything about the blinking light! What year is it?

OK, checking the '02 ESM, there is a diagnostic mode you can put the vehicle in when checking the transmission out. It causes the O/D light to flash on and off at certain intervals for so many cycles. It's a pretty involved procedure. I wonder if this is whats happening to your X somehow?

WOW you cant take a joke can you????????? i will remove the pic if you were offended by it...... i didn't mean any harm by it, just so you know....

also just so you know the brushguard will do more damage than if you didn't have one if you get into a wreck, also the mud flaps will break off if you ever decide to take it on the trails....... and the magnet i wasn't saying to take it off i was complimenting it by saying it was adding extra HP...... LOL ever since i have been on this forum we have been messing with each other about the stickers and whatnot......

LOL json3904. I'm not sure she's coming back...she's not been forum hardened yet..should require all noobs have a least 6 months experience over at XOC before applying here...hehehehe...:)

But if she does, I'm thinking her truck is in the tranny diagnostic mode and maybe we can give here instructions to turn it off.
