I just bought the X today.

It's not supercharged so my list of modifications for the time being are going to stay at the shallow end of the spectrum.

I'm not all about cold air intake because I really don't feel it's effective enough, however I am considering a possible header/exhaust combo to hopefully squeeze 10+ extra horses out of it.

I still want to keep the its reliability and I feel that's about as far as I can go with the X-terra with engine performance wise.

I want to work on that first and then move my direction into springs/shocks/bodylift/tires etc.

Anyone have any experience as to a good header/exhaust combo?

Headers I can't help you with because the one source I knew of is no longer a source (SLR) but I know a lot of guys here are running Gibson and Magnaflow exhausts and I hear good things from both.

Congrats on the X!

If they have them in stock and you have the cash then buy them because they are really good headers from what I've learned and once they are gone, they are gone and there doesn't seem to be any manufacturer willing to step up to the plate to help us out with headers either.

How hard are they to self-install?

Thanks man, I really dislike having to let someone else do the work unless it's very technical like engine tuning etc.

if you know any thing about turning wrenches then I'm pretty sure you could swap out the headers..... also when you add the headers you have to replace the rest of the exhaust if I'm not mistaken....
