: Speed sensor in T-case stuck!

SO after some issues with my 01 Xterrra I found that my speed sensor on the transfer case is dunzo. BUt I've heard from other Forums that it's a pretty easy fix. HAd to get the part from the dealer but it wasnt that much actually ($70) but the savings on the labor is what makes me happy. So anyway I'm under my X and finally see where this sensor goes on the transfer case. Whcih I'm pretty disappointed at the lack of maneuverabillitythat I had to unbolt this sensor. BUt I get it unbolted after about 45 min of small turns with my ratchet...then I try to pull the sensor out like everyone has told me and no luck. IT's stuck pretty good in there...So I can atl east turn the thing and make it so the bolt holder is able to pry on...well...that just ende dup breaking off. So I then decided it probably would be easier to see if the local muffler /brake shop can put it on a lift and try to get it out. I figured if I showed them exactly where it was at they could have something to be able to pull this out or have more room than I did under the X. After an hour waitng there they tell me they couldnt get it out and didnt want to pry too hard in lieu of being liable if anything happened to the T-case. So Tomorrow I have to schedule an appointment with my mechanic and explain to him what happened or someone can grant me some good ideas or suggestions if they had this problem with there X and got it out. I'm really not wanting to pay the labor charges on this if I dont have to.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c373/meandmyweinerdog/VSS2-1.jpgSO since I couldnt get the sensor out I decided to give in and take it to my mechanic today. Thought it would have taken at the most an hour...waited there til noon watching them frustratingly try to get this sensor out. They ended up getting it out a nit but then pushed it back in somehow and cant get it back out. At noon the guy finally told me that It would be best to just leave it for them to work on and that they had some more ideas to try to get the old one out. He told me the worst case scenario would be that they would have to drop the tranny and split the case to get the sensor out. Sounds like a lot of $ for me which I am not too pleased, especially since this part was suppose to be something that was just a unplug and replace part. BUt with the amount of room they have (about 3-4 in) they cant get anything to get a grip around it to pull on it sufficiently. So it looks like I wont have my X til at least monday afternoon. here's a pic of the stoopid sensor.

I'd suggest lots of penetrating oil and then some gentle persuasion. There is probably nearly 10 years of gunk and an O ring holding it in.

Yeah it got fixed. My Mechanic had to drop the transfer case and it ended up costing me like 175.00 just for the labor. Good luck with yours!

It really does just pull out, but depending on where you live, corrosion can seize them in there.
Here is a link that shows the rear section of t-case removed and replaced. Read the captions for the pertanent info. It is real important to get the plastic oil trough back in the right way. The pics explain how. http://nissan4wheelers.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3766078435/m/65110592031

Once you get the old one out, you should be able to clean up the bore and slide the new one in. Be sure to smear some Nev-R-Seize on the new one.

there looks to be a snap ring holding it in place.

that snapring holds the gear onto the shaft, it doesn't stop the whole sensor from pulling out.

I've found locking vice grips and twisting it back and forth a cm at a time eventually works... but even on tcases that aren't all rusty or gunked up, they are hard to get out.
