: Body lift...worth it?

I want to put bigger wheels/tires on, I'm a serious fisherman, and I plan on enjoying some offroad trails on my fishing days, and doin some muddin. I think doing a big 3" suspension lift is sort of un-necessary, the body lift and about 31" wheels will serve the same purpose. Plus I was told body lifts are much easier, and they're way cheaper. Am I right? scold me please

I have both the 3" SL and 2" BL and the body lift overall was easier to install and WAY cheaper. I got the PRG 4wd lift which ran me about 1800 after shocks and the AC 2" body lift was around 275-300 after the kit and other supplies. Just make sure you PM Rook on here for his body lift instructions, I used it and saved a few hours at least.

Alright cool, thanks a lot, I'm probably just going with the BL, can you send me the site/mag.article that you ordered it from

Not as familiar w/ gen 2s (05-current) - but do you even need to bother if putting 31s on? I would have thought 31s would fit with no problem since do on Gen 1s (00-04).

Not saying no BL - just saying maybe go w/ larger tires :) I think you'd like to get into that backwoods fishin' hole

no lift is required up the the 285's (33"). Just a melt mod if the inner fender plastic. I currently run 33" DuraTracs w/5" of lift

Great thread. Just throwing my Q out there for Johnny so he considers either why a BL or getting larger tires. May look funny with BL and 31s, but haven't seen any to say.

OK - some clarifications to help you out:

1) You can fit 31's now, w/o doing anything, 32's are a STOCK tire size for 2005+ X's. (31's are not an upgrade...33's would be an upgrade)

2) The ONLY purpose of a BL is to make room for larger tires w/o sacrificing wheel travel.

3) You can fit 33's, stock, with no lift of any kind (A little plastic bump in the front wheel well liner can rub, but it shrinks back with a hairdryer in mere minutes, or a heat gun in seconds, etc.)

4) If you were going to be happy with 31's, I should think you'd be ecstatic with 33's...so you do not need a suspension or a body lift.

5) If you wanted a lift anyway...on a 2005+ X, a 2" SL is easier than a 2" BL.

2" BL's on a 2000 - 2004 Xterra are easy, on the 2005+'s, its more work.

Also, the BL's on 2005+ X's are more expensive than on the prior years...

and SL's are cheaper....reversing the relationship.

So - for what you describe...

I'd just get a set of 285/75/16 tires, and mount them to your otherwise stock X, and call it a day.

If your terrain is a bit more likely to get you stuck/is rougher, etc...add a set of rock sliders instead of the aluminum step rails it came with....and get a hi-lift jack. (So you can un-high center yourself, / Not be damaged as easily while high centered, etc)

A 285/75/16 tire is about the same as a 33 x 11.5, a MUCH better tire size than a 31 x 10.5 for what you describe.

:wink-big:

I can't thank you guys enough, seriously this thread gave me all the answers I need. Hopefully soon I'll have the 33"s on and that'll do the job for me.

only thing about getting 33's with no lift is that its gonna look very stuffed in your wheel well. If you dont mine then thats cool, just may get some frame rub, i did a little but nothing a spacer/shackle lift wont fix. It all depends on the X really and its not really too bad if it does rub.

I'll have spacers or something put in, I'm looking for a shop that specializes on 4x4, because before I got my X I was an engine monkey, and now that I own an Xterra, my view changed, and I don't feel comfortable screwing around on something I dont know about, thats why there are professionals :)

ah dude spacers are easy as hell to put on. remove tire, pull off the coilover, place the spacer on top of the coilover, reinstall coilover w/spacer on top, put tire back on, done.

good stuff, so there will be no lift needed if I put on bigger tires and wheels? Because I want a nice set of 6 lug wheels that'll give 33" tires some more rubust. And should I do the melt mod before?

285's are the largest tire you can mount with no lift. melt mod is a good idea to do yes but not needed in all cases. I did it to mine and it still rubs at full turn but i'm used to it. I had to trim some minor sheet metal as well since I have a wider offset wheel.

2in BL with 31 Nexen MTs and I had quite a bit of rubbing but we pretty much just sanded it back and there were no major problems out of it.

LOL

Wow, no wonder you have rubbing, you still have the lower mudflaps on!

Most of us have snapped those off if we off road, or, remembered to remove them and put them in the garage or on ebay or something.

To clear the rears of the larger tires, its the plastic ledge those lower mud flaps (Used to) screw to, that gets snipped off.

:D

Also - To clarify - 2000 - 2001 X's have the smallest wells due to more plastic....and need the most trimming.

2002 - 2004's have less plastic in the front wells.

2000 - 2004's can fit 32's stock, WITH trimming.

2005+'s can fit 33's stock (285/75/16's), with some needing to melt back a bump in the front well liners (melt mod)

:D

yea mud flaps arent good on an Xterra or hell on anything for that matter, hehe my dirty mind lol

Yeah this picture is about 10 mins after the tires were put on. I thought that the mup flaps could be reason why they were rubbing so we took those off and took it for a test drive and they still rubbed. So then we then we trimmed the plastic back a couple of times and then it was all good.
