About a month ago i noticed the x starting a little slow . Thought it was the batt so i kept the jump box in the truck . welp came the day i stoped for coffee and Click X wont start . put the jump box on and nothing .Just the one click everytime i turned the key . so i guess it is the starter . I have the five speed so i let it roll back a bit pop the clutch and Bingo its off and running . get the x home turn it off and just click is all i get . I had to order the starter so it took a few days . In the mean time while i was waiting for the starter . batt had died ( maybe i left a radio on ) so i notice the neg side looks bad . while i charged the batt i cut off the old :aufkopfhauen-big::aufkopfhauen-big:neg termanl and put on a nice brass one . when i put the batt back in . x started right up .( kept the starter 3 days ) started stoped started stoped the x a hundered times before i took the starter back . used the money and bought a new batt . changed it car started fine . went to go home after work and CLICK . X wont start > same thing .pop the clutch and it started .got it home and again Just a Click when i tried to start it . well after a few days i was just going to take the batt out till i get the starter . and i tried to start and with out any probs it started right up . i dont get it at all > I'm not sure if it is the starter or not now > What are the other things i should look for ?

I had a problem almost exactly like that not to long ago. I would go to start the X and it would barely start. I didn't get the click at first just a slow and struggling start so I though it was the battery. I bought a new battery and it was fine for a day or so. Then it started up again. I would get a click sometimes and then I could try a few times and it fired right up, albeit rather slowly.
So one day I went out after class and just a click and nothing more. I don't have a manual so I couldn't jump start the X like you did. I had to replace the starter in the school parking lot and miss my physics II class, bummer I know, lol.

Change the starter and your worries should be over. Good luck

New guy here! Sorry to bring up an old topic, but my girlfriend drives a 2004 Xterra (automatic) and it's doing the same thing as described above.

I figured it was just corrosion on the battery so I cleaned the terminals, cleaned the posts, and cleaned the wires with a brass brush. I hooked them back up and it still wouldn't start. Lights work, but when you try to start it, they dim out. When you let off the key, they brighten back up to normal.

Where is the starter located? (I am an F150 man and don't know much about Xterras lol)

Thanks!
