The pic's are the gen 2 rack but I have the gen 1 as well and I will post a pic of that soon as I my buddy comes around with his or someone around Indiana stops by with a gen 1.

yes you would ditch the factory cross rails with this, they would no longer be needed.

thanks for the kind words, :wink-big:

I think that is worth 250.....Yakima Loadwarrior now runs around 300 bucks.
I bought mine in 2001 when prices were around 200ish.

the clamps (1" flat stock) bolt on under the factory tube, this pic is after a trip to LINE-X shop for a coating.

as far as price, most people dont know that the racks are made of 14 gauge cold rolled steel (not mild) and welded at every joint, I know its probably over kill but I like sturdy,
http://i39.tinypic.com/izs2ma.jpg
I dont recomend hauling a Xterra on top of your Xterra because the factory tubes are only rated for 150 lbs.

Dep,

I have a sun roof and from looking at the plans you posted, it looks as though there is enough room to open it. I wanted to ask if you have put one of these on a 1st gen with a sun roof.

I printed off your set of plans and asked a local guy who makes ladder racks for trucks if he might be able to put it together. I liked the light mounts that you did for Rev over at the newx by extending the 1" stock to over the side. His wiring job was awesome.

I also liked the way you extended the Rev rack with the extra box at the back. looks just right for a few petro cans. It also brought the back of the rack close enough to the rear that his lights could be angled downward a little better.

I think it would be cool to see one extend pass the front of the rails. The wind deflector could be removed and the rack could come farther forward and lights mounted in the front.

I want to see how much he charges to fab the whole thing up. I'd rather give a fellow xterra club member my money, plus I'm just down here in Bloomington, but I might be able to work out a trade for a couple of desktop machines with 17" monitors.

If you are willing to consider trade or barter along with some cash I'd prefer to have it built by the original artist.

Let me know about the sun roof working with the plans you posted and also if you are interested in barter+trade+cash.

Hey Dep, that's a pretty sweet rack; I dig how it lies low on the roof instead of up above the factory roof rails. I may contact you soon about getting one. I was wondering if it would be possible to get one with expanded metal mesh welded onto the floor of the rack.

A couple questions, dephep:

- How much for basket with a lightbar? The electrical actuator isn't that big a deal to me if I can deploy it manually, but I'd like to know more about the system and it's cost.
- Is there any way to put a cross beam just behind the light bar so I could put a ski rack up there in the winter?

Contact the original poster (Dephep), he hangs out over on thenewx more than here and his build thread over there is just insane but gives you a great idea of all the changes this rack has gone through over the years.

He has a website now:

http://hstrial-dephep.intuitwebsites.com/

Testimonies from other Xterra owners are all along the lines of 'the best money spent on a single mod'. I haven't read one single bad thing about them, and I'm looking to buy one for myself soon.

This is on my shortlist for a roof rack. The loadwarrior is still a viable options since I can get one new to my door for just a hair over $200, but I really like the looks of this one more.

Totally worth the money even though i can weld setimes its worth the money over the labor involved. Time is money sometimes. Plus not everyone is set up to fab stuff. Way better than the Yakima ones or some other one that's not a custom fit!nice work!

Dephep worked with me to fab up some simple brackets so I could mount some square tube crossbars on top of the Dephep rack. With the crossbars cut to width, I can mount up both my kayak and my cargo box at the same time... and they're wide enough to mount just about anything you want, bike racks, kayaks, roof top tent, whatever.

I had the rack powdercoated at a local shop for $74, including the crossbars and hardware.

Fantastic rack!

I saw a rack / basket on the road today. it looked like a series of round tubes that curved up at the ends, laying parallel front to back. It fit between the factory rails. Has anyone seen anything similar? I have not been able to locate it on the web.

If so, google 'Yakima Load Warrior'
*edit - link is just for clarification, I'm not endorsing that site at all.

meddic
07-23-2011, 12:58 AM
No I have seen a loadwarrior, this simpler. Just a series of tubes or pipes that curved up on the ends, laid side by side fairly close. [[[[[[[[ but curved on the ends rather than squared. I believe it sat on cross bars but couldn't see that close on the freeway. The ends curved up at the factory rails. The closest comparison I can come up with is a wood rack for the fireplace. Oh well thanks anyway.
