I just picked up my 02 xtrerra and noticed small rock chip like spots on my rear hatch. Owner I got it from did not haul anything and in some cases it looks like its under the paint. There are also a few very small ones on the bottom of the drivers side door under the molding. What caused these and while I was flipping through the manuals I saw a warranty book and looked at it. Says there is a 60month warranty on the paint? Is this something that needed to be bought or just came with the car? It says its transferable to all buyers and since its a 02 it should still be covered. Any ideas on this?

well checked with the dealer today and he took some pics and sent them off to Nissan. He said a 3 yr 30-40,000 mile warranty on it. It looks like a bunch of little rock chips that started rusting. Really kinda pisses me off since i know its not from towing or gravel roads.
What can I do? Should I take a sanding pen and then hit them with touch up and hten clear? I keep a nice coat of wax on it at all times and it still seems to rust a little on the holes....

He said it was one or the other I just cant remember what he said. Its not really rust rust but more like specs of paint chipped off and the bare metal gets surface rust. He also said it was more common in lighter colored vehicles? I was just curious if anybody else had similar things happen? I will try and post some pics here soon.....

This is actually been a problem with X's. The rear hatch will get little rust marks. It's been happening for years, though as far as I know there was never a recall.

No, not just you. It seems the back hatch is the only place it happens.

what could I do to slow/fix the problem without repainting ? Could I take a sanding pen and then use good touch up paint?

That would be your best bet. Or just cut a circle the size of the rust spot and glue/tape it to a pencil eraser. Then just sand it in a circular motion.
Another good thing to do is to wash the hatch and use a clay bar on it. That will take out any of the impurities in the paint. Then use a cleaner wax on it. After that, apply a good coat of wax to it. During the winter and when it rains, the hatch just collects everything.
