Hey guys. First post but i've been reading a lot here and soaking it all in. I just got a 2008 4x4 X and I'm looking to upgrade the wheels/tires. I went to a place called Century tire and I told the guy I wanted to go up in rim size and get a bit more lift out of my tires. He did a little comptuer research and was trying to sell me 20s. I asked about 18s or 17s and he said something about it not being an option because he's "guessing that they figure everyone wants to move to 20s." He also didn't like the idea of getting a larger tire and messing with the sped/odometer.

So my question to you all is: Is he BSing me? Can i get 17s or 18s? Obviously they have 17s cos the SE models come with them. Anyone have any advice when dealing with these guys?

From what I'm reading by you all I should be looking into 265/70/17 or
275/70/17.

Thanks for your input!

well for one you have the air pressure sensors so either you get rims that accept them or your light will stay on, also i know for the first gen there is no way to change the spedo for bigger tires, so we use the scanguage.... and you should be able to go with any size rim that is bigger than stock with no problem.... hope this info helps

This salesman is officially BSing you.... 17,18" not an option? Don't up your rims to get lift, Downsize them, and upsize your tires. If you get 20's do not expect to go offroad. Thank you for asking though. Welcome to the boards!-James

Welcome to the club!

Yes the tire guy is full of it and I'm wondering if it might be some liability thing they are required to say because I hear it a lot.

One thing to add though, if you go up in rim size your tires are going to go up in price as well. Like James (soccerbrace) said, go down in rim size and up in tire size.

Good example is looking at the BFG AT K/O's

15" rim/31" tire = $124.00 a tire (31X10.5R15)
17" rim/31" tire = $192.00 a tire (265/70R/17)
20" rim/ any size = $310 - $400+ a tire

The prices are from tirerack.com.

Great advice! thanks for the warm welcome. The wheels on mine are that punched hole look. Not a fan. So you guys are saying to even stick with the 16s? Or upgrade to 17s? I like the idea of getting bigger rims but I'm glad you talked me out of going much higher than that.

Welcome to the Club!!!

The 2nd Gen X's will take 16" rims and larger Only do to the brake calipers.

The other thing is that Nissan changed the Lug pattern for the NewX and we don't have that many option out there.
I'm running Pro Comp 7089s on my OR with BFG A/Ts in 285/75/R16s.
There are some other options out there but you will have to hunt around for the right specs.

I'll see what I can find and post up some of the other options other guys are running.

Ah, so there is a HUGE difference with the 08 X's. That being said I need to talk with someone with an 08? I appreciate your input guys. Any help you can offer me, dave, would be great. I wanna be armed when I head back in

I would like to interject something here for those of you NOT in the tire industry. The sales person was NOT trying to BS you. The wheel manufacturers have simply not built the wheels that you are asking for. The vehicle has a bolt pattern only found on a few nissans and older dodge dakota's and durango's. The bolt pattern is 6-4.5. If you want to voice frustration, voice it at the auto manufacturers for building something that is one off of everything else. They make 18" wheels, they make 20" wheels. American racing lists other sizes, but they never build wheels in the fitments.

ya, its just plugs into your OBDII port near the fuse box under the dash on the driver's side
no other wires required

the scaguage is very easy to install, and set up.... very user friendly..... as to the tires the 05+ X's have the same bolt pattern, and there is a limited amout of rims you can put on unless you buy spacers that change the bolt pattern..... good luck.

'05 to '08 (2nd Gens) are all pretty much the same. Use any rim 16" or larger and as has been said tires are cheaper in 16"s.
As has also been said more tire is better for wheeling (the rims suffer less rock rash) but it is your vehicle to do with as you wish.

FYI, there are wheel adapters so you could make a 4.5 fit a 5.5
