: Remote kayaking spots

I'm planning on getting more into kayaking this spring/summer time, and I'm wondering if there are any good kayaking spots in VA/MD/PA.

I'm looking for places that are somewhat more remote, and not too many people if any. Ideally it'd be off some fire trail/logging roads (so I can give my X a small workout on the way) and I'd spend the better part of the day there. Extra points if there are no park fees or anything, and even more extra points if there is camping spots (still remote) close to the water.

All suggestions are welcome! Thank you!

Wharton State Forest in NJ. thousands of acres and really cheap camping at the campsite

What kind of kayaking are you interested in? If this thread pans out I would be interested in checking out a few of the places. I live in Bowie, Maryland but am a little familiar with Warton in New Jersey. Kinda far but doable on a weekend-lots of flat water.
Currently I do the Patexent River, parts are deserted but the lower end gets busy. a lot of obstacles (fallen trees) but an enjoyable paddle.

What type of Kayaking are you planning on doing? Class 0/1 (lakes), class 1/2 streams/rivers, or more like 2/3 stuff? (or going crazy and class 4+)?

for now i'm gonna do just 0-2 stuff (more lakes though, cuz this is going to be my relaxing, and photography time). simple and scenic would be nice.

wharton would be a bit of a drive, but would make for a good weekend getaway. Patuxent is a much closer drive, so I'll definitely give that a look. thanks for all the input!

If you are interested in paddling the Patuxent, let me know, I know the combinations to access the launch areas. The Patuxent is a tidal river and provides some great picture taking oppurtunities. I would be willing to team with you in setting up launch and pick-up logistics.

There's some places in south central PA as well. I know a lot of people that canoe the Little Juanita, dropping in near Huntingdon, PA and taking a 2 or 3 day trip down river camping out over night. I haven't done it myself yet, but it's always sounded fun

John, I may have to take you up on that offer come spring time.

thanks everyone, keep the suggestions coming!

Senseless,
Another good area near to you is the South Fork of the Shennandoah around Bentleyville Virginia. The river abuts the National Forest and camping is free.
You will definately need at least two vehicles one at put in and the other at pick-up.

Also check out the Rappohanic upriver from Fredricksburg, Va.
