I bought a new 2007 'X' Xterra last October. I'm very happy so far, haven't been offroad, but had 15 inches of snow that was great fun. First mod was a set of goodyear MTRs, next was factory skidplates, and Hella micro DE foglites.
My one disappointment is fuel milage. I'm getting 11.3mpg. Very consistant. I bought this truck to replace my 1984 K5 Blazer, that I bought new, which has a carbureted V8, no computer, 11.50/32 BFG Mud terrains, and 180,000 miles. The week before I bought the Xterra, the Blazer got 11.2mpg, driving the same places. Anybody know why the mileage is so low?
I am turning this into the Offroad version, as much as I can. I can't find anything on the Nissan rear locker anywhere. So far only find ARB that might have a model to fit. Would appreciate input about offroad equipment, and mpg. Thanx

Welcome to the club.

I agree with these guys... something isn't right. I'm driving a 1st. gen with a supercharger and I'm still able to get 15 to 16 even when I drive heavy footed. I would think you should be at least 17 or 18 on highway.

Welcome aboard:wink-big:

I bought my '07 in September. Just as a comparison for you I get right at about 20mpg on a trip. I don't measure my overall mpg as I do really short runs around town the rest of the time and I know the mileage will suck. A trip to the dealer might be in order. Possibly one of the temperature sensors is out of wack.

Welcome to the club. You should be getting better gas mileage than that. Are you filling up at the same place each time? Some gas pump can be way off.

Thanx for the responses. I guess I should clarify the mileage some. The 11.3 is mostly short trips around town, but the same short trips where the old Blazer got 11.2. On the highway, I got 17.0 on one tank. Then 14.8 and 14.5 are the best. I did change tires, but only from 265/70-16 all season, to 265/75-16 Goodyear MTR mud tires. They are just under one inch taller than stock. I have not been getting gas at the same place every time, but have kept all gas receipts, and written how many miles on them. With the window sticker saying 16mpg city, 23mpg hwy, that somewhere near 14mpg would be the lowest. That is still 25% more than I'm getting. I did take it to the dealer last week, and they couldn't find anything wrong. Said they would check with Nissan tech support.
I did spot the Shrockworks stuff, but it is fairly pricey. I like working with metal, think I'll try to duplicate some of their stuff. It's the kind of thing I do for relaxation. At least on days that aren't good for riding the CBR (get several of those here in Michigan).
I guess the next highway trip I'll try going 55 (I think I can go 55), see if that results in better mpg.

I am wondering if k1w1t1m would check your "you know it's going to be lousy" short trip mileage for me. You don't show a location, but in Michigan it's been cold. Not good for mpg.
Hope you guys don't get the wrong idea, I LOVE the X, and will for many years, even if the mileage sucks forever. I anticpate it being an excellent off-roader, and certainly does drive great onroad too.

Totally understandable about the concerns though. It was one sacrifice I knew I was going to have to make coming from driving hondas for the past 12 years. I think it's a fair trade off.

One thing that helps me is I drive more by my tach than the speedo. With mine being supercharged I listen to the rpm's and where the super begins to "sing". When it's singin', the gas is guzzlin'. I try to keep mine at no more than 2500 rpm's when I'm doing my daily driving. Yeah it sucks coming off the line that slow but it does help. I've got a lead foot and it's taken some getting used to but my mileage is starting to stay consistently around 16 to 17 now in town (1st gens mileage isn't near what the 2nd gens are). My best mileage comes from 2 lane highways where the speeds are around the 50 to 55mph range.

Drake that is great mileage I think. My 1st gen non-supercharged gets 14 at best and that is part in town and part highway. Maybe I need to get mine checked out because its completely stock.

Driving around 2500 rpms has helped me a lot. It's hard to do especially when you get a little irritated with traffic but it works. Normally I was getting about 250 miles to a tank and now I'm up around 280 to 290. I'm hitting 270 before the fuel light comes on. But a lot of my mileage comes from those 2 lane highways which help a lot.

I'm going to clean the MAF next week (it's 20 degrees and raining all this week) and I added a K&N drop-in filter and it's helped a touch as well.
