My father just had some new tires put on his car and they filled them with Nitrogen instead of air. I know Nascar has done this for a long time and I had heard it was starting to be done in "regular" cars. Apparently you will not lose airpressure and I guess its a little lighter.

Anyone have any information this?

I would suppose the nitrogen is not effected by temperature, so it is more stable, but it's hard to believe the tire dealer has the added expense of using it

I've heard of it, and plenty of tire places do it, but honestly... does it really matter??? Probably not. Plus, if you go offroad, you're not gonna have that nitrogen very long, from airing down, and airing back up again.

I ran nitrogen on a set of 22s on my old truck, the only plus was they didnt lose pressure come winter time. a local tire shop had an online coupon for free nitrogen fill up with no purchase, so I tried it and well air from you compressor is around 70% nitrogen anyways, is not something i would suggest spending money on

I consider it a gimick. Just about all new vehicles come with nitrogen filled tires as a dealer add on. They like to charge about $100. Supposedly the tire pressure remains more constant despite temperature variations. Regular compressed air works for me and when I air my tires down for wheeling only compressed air will be going back in.

I guess he did pay an extra 5 bucks a tire or something for it. He obviously doesn't go wheeling or anything. If it were me, I would go with air also. I guess I don't really see the point, its not like airing up a tire is Cumbersome.

When I got my BFG A/Ts the shop put nitrogen in but of course down the road I aired down and was back to normal air.

So the nitrogen is used because temperature doesn't affect it doesn't expand and contract like regular air. aircraft tires (at least military) are nitrogen only. i run nitrogen, but only cause i get it for free at work, and i usually just air my tires there.
