: Spotting Spammers
Drake 12-30-2010, 08:17 AM This is a warning to any spammers and a notice to our members here about the recent spamming bombardment.
We have been seeing a LOT of spammers getting through our security checks and posting here. It seems they are getting a little more clever because they disguise their posts with questions actually pertaining to Xterras. Help the moderators and administrators give these people the boot by reporting their posts.
What we are noticing on how to pick them out: Check their post count and their signature. They never have more than 1 or 2 posts and their signature will contain a hyperlink to a company not associated with Club Xterra or other Nissan sites. If you see someone that meets this criteria, report the post immediately please and we will hit them with the ban stick.
Warning to the potential spammers: If you have a hyperlink in your signature, we WILL NOT question you about the validity. You WILL BE BANNED immediately without warning. Zero exceptions. There is no advertising to any non-offiliated companies allowed by members unless approved by the moderators and administrators of this site.
Thank you. :D
Snow Chaser 12-30-2010, 08:55 AM Non offiliated? :D
I got you guys backs.
J Everett 12-30-2010, 08:58 AM Swing that ban hammer like Thor would!
Bluegrassen 12-30-2010, 09:08 AM Thanks for staying on top of this Drake. Thats one of the reasons I like this forum.
NCPhotoTrekker 12-30-2010, 09:16 AM I've noticed that the spammers are getting quite clever. Through my website I've seen them go in and pull excerpts out to use as comments. It looks like they are actually discussing things that have been posted. On other boards where I am part of the admin staff we have the same issues with related posts (on topic, or valid questions) with very random signatures. Also, links to other sites that will pertain to the original post within the post body. It can be a full time job spotting these, but the ban is always so sweet.
Now, talking about affiliated sites....what about the link in my signature? I promise I'm not a spammer, the post count is too high.
NateDawgG 12-30-2010, 10:09 AM Totally agree with you. Ban those f#*kers! I've called out and flamed on a couple spammers in the past. They usually disappear after you bust their chops.

19kdrill 12-30-2010, 10:12 AM ^LOL, it's a good thing you posted the thumbnail. I almost missed the link above it.
NateDawgG 12-30-2010, 10:26 AM Seriously, I know I clown a lot, but aren't we allowed to have a URL in our signature? I've always had one and just thought it was another way for peeps to get to know me. Be happy to take it down if need be but of course I'd rather not.
Drake 12-30-2010, 11:17 AM We know who and what the good sigs are. If it is your privately owned business like a photography studio, graphics design, fab shop, etc., we are cool with that.
999 times out of 1000, if someone has taken the time to customize their signature with a hyperlink to another company before they've made their first post, they are here for only one thing. Those are the ones we target. Now if you add in a link sometime down the road, that's a little different. Please ask the staff about it before doing so just to be on the safe side.
For those of you who are active here and have a link in your signature, we will just call you guys safe under a "grandfather clause". :D

NateDawgG 12-30-2010, 03:19 PM Awesome!
Creepy Cruiser 12-30-2010, 05:03 PM Nice!
I've seen a few of these lately, (like the vitamin lady), and I thought they must be spammers, but I just didn't know for sure, so I didn't want to call them out and have it be someone with a legit question, lol.
Yeah I had a hard time figuring out if that Itsjaquie account was a spammer but I saw after Deja ban hammered the account the only thing listed in their profile was the electronic cigarette site plus the only posts it made were on really old subjects.
That was a good catch!
xtacular 12-30-2010, 09:47 PM Thanks admins
Edit: and mods. Is there a difference?
Yeah, Moderator powers are substantially less than Admins (or Gods as they make us moderators call them!). Where we can edit things at the thread level, they can edit the site structure. The one big club in the mods bag is the ability to nuke spammers...and we enjoy nukin' spammers 'round here!
Creepy Cruiser 01-02-2011, 09:18 PM So we just hit the report button right? Then it goes to you guys, or does it go all the way to corporate first?
If so, you should be getting one very soon (I just sent one your way), from the sticker thread
Yeah Creepy, it sends an emergency action message to all of us and then it's a big race to see who gets to ban them. Much better than on other internet forums where reports first go to the top and then filter down a day or so later.
Creepy Cruiser 01-03-2011, 05:59 AM Cool, sounds like it's a lot of fun that way too, lol.
