Newbie here, currently have a 2003 Subaru Forester (http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/newbie-discussions/45573-newbie-considering-fj-purchase.html#) XS with a few offroad mods and 80k miles. It just isn't standing up to the abuse I've been giving out (new clutch just installed, now I've got a noise from the transmission). I love Subarus, but you just can't expect to push a car past it's limits and expect it to perform reliably. I'm averaging 20k/year (bought it in '04), and I honestly want to get into a new vehicle before this one really falls apart.

I'm currently considering an FJ Cruiser (http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/newbie-discussions/45573-newbie-considering-fj-purchase.html#) and a Xterra. The reviews between the two are pretty close, altho I haven't been able to find reviews pitting the two against each other for the 2008 models (if anyone has a link to one, that'd be great!). I'm not really leaning one way or the other yet, still doing research and set up some appointments to drive each of them. I like the looks of the Xterra better, and having 4 real doors. However, I prefer the lighter curb weight of the FJ and it seems to be more capable offroad right off the lot.

I love forums, they always have much better information than the dealerships. I'll be cruising around here for more info and answers to my questions, but what is everyone's opinion on the Xterra vs the FJ? Thanks!

Yeah, it leaves a bit to be desired visually. Keep in mind I've been driving around in a box wagon tho for the past 4 years, and getting interesting looks out on the trail with it. So looks to me aren't really a huge deal. Sounds like you definitely like your Xterra, if given the chance would you buy another one or an FJ? (looks aside) Thanks!

i would stick with the X proab a 2nd gen, since it has the 5.5" lift. Yes i love my X and it would take a act of congress for me to get rid of it (unless i buy a new one.... LOL)

Personally I don't think the FJ looks horrible, but it has some issues I can't get over:
1. Rear seat access limited, due to NO real rear doors
2. Vision limited due to screwy design.

I'd pick the Xterra, just be sure to the OffRoad options package.

Json - Which years are the second generation? I'll start cruising around for some used...

Anthony - Thanks for the tips! If I go with the Xterra it'll definitely be the offroad package.

Second generation is 2005 and newer.

You may want to wait a LITTLE bit longer, as we are expecting a new re-design in 2009 that is supposed to debut at the NY Auto show.

PS. I'm also a previous Suby guy. 2 WRX's and a 2.5TS wagon.
