: In dash DVD/Nav project

I decided to install an in-dash DVD player into my 07 OR but did not want the expense of built in Nav system too. I already had a V7 portable GPS unit so I opted to get a unit without GPS built in. I decided that I did not want a motorized unit since it would be prone to mechanical failure. So I opted for a Power Acoustic PTID-5800 with a 5.8 inch touchscreen.
Installation went fine except the included black bezel was too big for opening. I had to get a double din installation kit with another bezel. That one fit the opening in the dash but was too tight for the DVD unit. With a little trimming I was able to do it.
Anyway, I left the original tray off from the top of the dash and built a custom cover that hinged from the back. Playing around with some old cassete boxes and an old plastic pebble grained tool box I fashioned the lid to house my GPS. Simple but it works. Both the lid and the screen cover have black plastic door edge pieces on both ends to give them a more professional touch.
Finally, to conceal the DVD unit from those who would harm it while shopping at the mall or something I made the flexible cover that hooks the top of the dash where the GPS sits in its concealed area.
The Nissan emblem I bought off eBay for a couple bucks. I got the idea for the screen cover from another forum and modified it a little. I had the black fake leather like stuff which I glued to a piece of plastic cut from a plastic bookcover.
Anyway, it all came together fine and I'm pleased with the way it came out. I normally don't leave the screen cover on but keep it in the truck to cover it when I need to. From outside the vehicle it looks like nothing is in the dash at all.

Here is the unit installed:

Yep, it lies flat stored inside resting on some foam that I lined the inside of the compartment with. It really does work like a charm. I ran the DC cord inside the dash out the top compartment area when the radio went in. Since the GPS is portable it comes right out and I can take it with me. Believe me though, when the lid is down it is totally concealed.

I was amazed how easy it was. This is where I learned how to remove it:

Scroll down to the dash removal pictures. The radio simply unscrews and pulls out. I used a custom harness from Crutchield.com which matches the Xterra's perfectly. I can pull the DVD unit out and simply plug the original radio back in.

The stock stereos come out really easily. Just be careful lifting up on the shelf above the stereo so dents aren't left in the plastic.

Wal-Mart also sells the wiring kits for about $7.

How is that Power Acoustik treating you?

:) I'm very pleased with it so far. The radio functions are excellent in that the numbers are large enough and bright enough to see clearly. The DVD playback is excellent too. It has a digital clock in the lower right screen which is nice but it is only visible with the unit on. There are not many bells and whistles but it meets my needs.
All in all I would have to say it is a viable option to the more expensive units I looked at. We'll see 6 months from now though.

To show how easy it is, here's a shot of the GPS unit resting in its compartment. The small brass hinges you see have a little fold out frame onto which the unit rests when the lid is open. It gives the GPS something to lean back on when the lid is open. I think most of the smaller portable GPS units available will fit no problem:
