: airsoft?
kurtmiller 12-12-2010, 11:31 AM Was just curious if anyone on the site was into airsoft I have been trying to just everytime I get close to affording one something happens where I had to buy something else but my gf is getting me an echo1 platinum edition m4 for Christmas
RacerXXL 12-12-2010, 11:52 AM I've looked in to it a few times wanting to buy a Tokyo Marui SOPMOD M4 Recoil AEG as a trainer. Every time I have the cash set aside to outfit it how I would want it I end up buying another AR15 or ammo to run the ones I have.
zachbiz 12-12-2010, 11:59 AM before i got my drivers license I was into airsoft. I gave it up and only go playing with my friends once in a blue moon. I kept my built up TM hi-capa because it wasnt worth selling. a few hundred for something worth a lot more. too bad i didn't keep the original money for my X. :( right now the sear disconnect is snapped so that tiny hard to find part is keeping the whole things from working, but heres a photo. you dont have a parts hi-capa do you?
http://i25.tinypic.com/flvac1.jpg
i used to be into it, had some cheap-o pistols, one was a tokyo marui and a few were 'Y&P' brand
still have most of them, i also have a green-gas desert eagle knockoff, not even sure of the brand
my brother still has all of his, some really nice ones (super 9 rifle, MP5 replica, etc)
I've been playing for year's and have all kind's of Airsoft goodies. Wife hate's me for it to lol. When I was a cop we used airsoft in CQB situations for SRT team training. I've played with a E1 platinum edition to test them out and they are a very nice gun. You should be happy.
Here's some of mine.

Drake 12-12-2010, 07:34 PM I've really wanted to get into this but it just isn't catching on around here at all. We have a few decent paintball fields now but even those are just now getting to be somewhat popular. Naturally they became popular after I sold my markers and gear. :(
json3904 12-12-2010, 07:35 PM around here we play paintball... LOL
alpine spirit 02-05-2011, 04:20 PM Bump...
Anyone else, its become a great past time over the last 2 years that my son & I do.
Drake 02-05-2011, 04:23 PM I would do it in a heartbeat. It's not catching on at all down here. :( I guess tactics and scenarios are too much to comprehend for southerners and they just prefer to spray and pray on a speed-ball field. That is no fun to me.
Lockupyodaughter 02-05-2011, 04:33 PM lol, dude, I shot my littel sister with my airsoft the other day, it was hilarious.
rjr162 02-05-2011, 04:37 PM Paintball here as well, but I came to the same fate as Drake. Had some kick ass paintball gear (wasn't into speed ball, we played in the woods).. then everyone quit playing so I sold my stuff. A few months later, they all wanted to play again, so I got new stuff... only for everyone to quit a few weeks later. This happened about 3 or 4 times before I said 'f it and just gave up.
One that I got a while ago and still have is one of the ones from the Armotech WG-65 series
http://www.tacticalpaintball.com/service/Wg65-1.jpg
It was actually very accurate and never broke a ball (well except the time we tried playing when it was about 40 degrees out lol). Quite gun too
Drake 02-05-2011, 04:46 PM That looks wicked rjr! My close friends and I did the woods/scenario games but if you/we wanted to get into larger groups it was more or less speed ball. Even when we played at fields that had mock-cities. There is a field about an hour south of me that holds a re-inactment of the Normandy invasion each year with about 250 players in attendance. Never got to make it down for that though.
I got tired of speed ball fast. Unless you were able to put together at least 3 to 4 guys for a consistent team, you couldn't work out any strategies. I got sick of covering 2/3 of the course only to get left out to dry by my teammates trying to up their kill count instead of helping me capture the flag or cover my ass.
I guess it is a good thing Airsoft hasn't caught on here. That would be one more expensive hobby I really don't need to get involved in. :D
alpine spirit 02-05-2011, 06:43 PM Yeah I used to do paintball but the cost and getting co2 easy was impossi le up here. Then my son asked for an Airsoft. 2 weeks after be got his I got one.
dmitrym 02-05-2011, 06:51 PM How does airsoft play compare to paintball?
How does airsoft play compare to paintball?
Generally, its more tactical....but depending upon where you do it, and with who, etc...there's an enormous overlap.
With paint ball, you are slammed with a heavy paint filled ball, which marks you...compared to a teeny airsoft bb that stings, but doesn't paint you...using the honor system essentially.
I only use mine on squirrels. I use a spring/slide action pistol firing ~ 315 fps to keep the little gray terrorists off my wiring and the bird feeder.
I can get off maybe 2-3 shots before they've gone into ricochet warp drive mode to escape.
At first, the first shot was a gimmee....as they'd be sitting there eating the bird seed or climbing under my hood, etc....and when hit, they'd do a back flip and then light the booster rockets and scoot off.
After a few times of feeling the wrath of plastic bbs, if they hear the door knob turn, they start running for their lives....as they know bbs will follow.
Now, I open the door, and they're running for daylight, trying to get something between themselves and me.
After a hit, the next hit is just aiming where they're going to land and timing it before they have footing to re-aim their bodies.
I seem to average 4/5 hits on the first 1-2 shots, and I'm about 2/5 on the 3rd shot, which isn't too bad considering that at that point they are a madly dodging target bouncing back and forth between branches, etc, as fast as they can go.
So, its all about hitting a dodging target about 30' away, the size of a squirrel, going 10-15 mph...which is kind of fun.
The gun is pretty accurate, I can get quarter sized groups at 30', free hand. Once in a while the hop-up is weird and it throws a curve ball, but, other than that, its a nail gun.
It would be nice to open up on the vermin with an automatic or semi-auto ...instead of having to cock the spring to shoot again which breaks your sight line, etc....
...but its more sportsman-like this way, and, I can still get off 5 shots in 2 seconds if I repeat fire it like we used to strum the hammers of the wheel guns to make them fire like a machine gun.
:wink-big:
alpine spirit 02-05-2011, 07:48 PM How does airsoft play compare to paintball?
Just depends on who you play with. It can be like paintball or more tactical.
We play both ways. Heavily treed area lots of cover.
dmitrym 02-05-2011, 10:43 PM Cool. I started playing paintball locally depending on the crowd it's either tactical-ish or free for all spray and pray. Do plastic BBs inflict as much damage as paintballs?
rjr162 02-06-2011, 12:11 AM It really depends. Depending on paintball equipment, you can reach out pretty far. The exception is in the woods. If there's a lot of foliage or other small brush in the way, your balls are most likely going to break before getting to what you're shooting at. Paintballs can sting/hurt as well. It's not suggested to send a paintball out at over 300fps because most face masks and such are rated for that speed, plus there's more chance of the balls just breaking in the barrel. I had my Tippmann 98 Custom set for 300 fps utilizing the flatline barrel (puts a backspin on the ball to increase distance quite a bit.. downside is it's harder to hit someone laying say behind a downed tree). When I put the carbon fiber barrel on I never adjusted for the next round of play. I hit someone from about 60 feet away and left a hell of a bruise on their stomach even with them wearing layers and a camo jacket. My friend and I also drew blood off each other when I tracked him and popped up over the downed tree he was hiding behind ready for me to pop up. I popped up and said "surrender now" and he shook his head no, so I dropped and we both started popping rounds off. This was about 30 feet way and we both cracked each other between the fingers lol.
It hurts a heck of a lot more when the paintball hits you and doesn't break vs when it does break. I've only messed with airsoft, and by messed I mean when my brother shot me in the back wondering how well our other brother's airsoft pistol shot. That was from about 20' and it stung, but I'd say less so than some of the paintball shot I've taken.
Do plastic BBs inflict as much damage as paintballs?
Haha It all depends. I've had airsoft guns for awhile, I only stopped buying once I got into modding trucks, way more fun. The spring guns that you pump or pull the slide back on don't really get too powerful. However, once you get into AEG (Auto Electric Guns), AEP (Auto Electric Pistols), or gas that's when it gets dangerous. Those can get to 500 FPS and way up with better parts. I've bled from being shot. One of the rifles I have is a classic bolt action that shoots at 650 FPS and you'll feel it through a layer of clothes even at a distance. I will have to say, I like airsoft way better than paintball due to the fact that the guns you're using look like real guns.
Roadwarrior 02-06-2011, 02:32 PM I had a spyder clone with a 21" sniper barrel that broke down into an 11 and a 10 inch barrel. The gun was super quite, and I was quite the sniper. I kinda miss my Mokal Fokus, but then again, playing speed ball (that is all we played when we went to a legit course) was not as fun. Spray and pray..So I sold my stuff to a neighbor who plays with his friends (age 12). I thought about getting into airsoft, but cant find the funds to do so.
theemcgee 02-07-2011, 12:12 AM wow i havent bashed in years lol...but i have an armalite m15a4 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/318K6EC2PBL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
and a dpms m4 ffh http://www.tgstactical.com/images/17930lg.jpg
but when we go to ranges we use airsoft for our CQB training in the shoot houses....the only non realistic part is winding up the mags lol....im still confused why the army bout 300 rnd mags for us to train with instead of 30....???? what happened to train like you fight?...wow the service is going to shit these days

Used compressed air through a guerilla 3000psi tank. I loved compressed air over CO2. I could go through almost a case of balls on a single tank.

mudlover55 06-17-2011, 03:24 PM wow just found this thread!!! im pretty big into it, i play usually every sunday. i actually build guns for people as well
weerez935 06-20-2011, 11:06 PM It is all in how you play.
I used to play paintball tournaments back when paintball was still on espn lol.
Honestly, they have both dropped tremendously in popularity in the past four years or so.
I remember when a WGP mechanical autococker would run 700 bucks. When I got out of the sport they were being sold at 50-300$. A lot of people think airsoft is more tactical, but it my opinion it does not offer the same experience. For example, with paintball you have the option of woodsball and speedball (generally). With airsoft every single marker (not gun) is made to fit the tactical crowd. There is no speedball for airsoft. I mean really having a marker that looks like an AK to me reminds me of the paintball guys who played with pumps and tippmans. They look like a military weapon, giving you a "survival woods" game feel. How you actually play the game is up to you. I know just as many paintball guys that play woods as speedball. Mostly both.
If you want to play woods ball:
Markers:
Tippman 98 custom (all you need, nothing you don't)
A mechanical autococker (by far my favorite, most accurate, rebuildable, fun to tinker with)
Speedball:
Anything made by eclipse (they used to make the triggers for autocockers)
WGP electric autocockers w the Eblade (pref E2)
Intimidators
Older DYE stuff
The first two are some of the best ever produced.
The second two are made by players who started out on the first two.
If you want tactical. I built a mech autococker that had a pump action. There is a company that still makes the kit and they are sweet.
Other brands I would consider:
Shocktech (high end 600+ range)
Brands I would avoid:
Angel
JT
Viewloader
Icon
Bushmaster
Pirranah (now)
Any thing made by K2 (including recently made low end autocockers)
Spider
A lot of these brands were great 4 years ago, but the triggers and quality have deteriorated to almost nothing. For instance, I had to do regular maint on my WGP Custom built autococker, but it always performed. The viewloaders and spyders have fallen apart, leaked, ETC.
Keep in mind with anything high end your looking at other exspenses as well
Nitrogen tank (is a must)
High speed hopper (no point in having a marker that shoots 22+ a second if the hopper can't load them that fast)
These sites were extremely helpful and have great used deals
pbreview.com
pbnation.com
@ Drake that is a nice setup man. I wish I hadn't sold my stuff and we could've hit the fields. But after not playing for so long I needed to sell the stuff.
As far as how it compares
Cost
Paintball<Airsoft
Tactics
Paintball>Airsoft
Accountability (no guessing if someones out)
Paintball> Airsoft
Level of fun
Paintball>Airsoft
Durability of Equipment
Paintball> Airsoft
Airsoft is cheaper but you get what you pay for.
Stickle 06-21-2011, 06:44 AM I played a lot of tourney paintball when I was younger now I buy the real thing. I cannot justify paying 400-500 for a fake AK when a real AK costs the same if not less. Or even pay 600-700 for a fake AR when you can buy one for about the same price. toys are for kids
weerez935 06-21-2011, 10:02 AM exactly
alpine spirit 06-21-2011, 04:37 PM Used to play paintball a ton too but cost and convenience was not there.
As for spending 600 on a gun... sure you could but why..... Tons of cheap guns that are very reliable out there. Our guns...nothing over $150, screw the expensive crap.
As for accountability its the same for both... I saw the hand wipes (oh no that hit was from an earlier game) with paintball no different then not calling out.
Either way find a group you like to play with and you are good to go with whatever type of game you like to play.
weerez935 06-22-2011, 02:51 AM well like I said most of those can be had for 300 or less. I played tournaments so the cheap stuff wouldn't cut it. lol and face it we're all guys here, if its 2wd we want 4. if its 4 we want a locker, if it has a locker we want 2 lockers, if it has two lockers we want sas. Same applies here lol. just kidding lol. I just gave my opinion to what I would buy and would not. I would not buy a cheap gun with an electronic trigger. I would however buy a mechanical one ETC. On airsoft all you have is "Ouch"...in paintball you have "Ouch/splat". If you buy good paint it has to be washed out. It will not rub off
