: What are the two vacuum hoses that plug into the air intake for?

I recently installed a custom intake...without utilizing the vacuum hoses, my car stalls out unless given gas...now that I connected the two hoses to my new intake, the car runs and idles without the need for me to give it gas..I think the idle is lower now though at only 600 rpm warm, and 1000 cold...the idle goes from 800 warm in park to 600 rpm in drive/reverse...is that normal?

Seems about right, as long as its not bogging or stalling Id say your good.

I assume you put a CAI on? It will take your ecu a little while to adjust to the less restricted air flow

I did a short ram intake...I didnt know that the two hoses connected to the intake were vacuum..so I put breathers on them...the car kept stallin and then I realized they were vacuum lines...I retrofitted them onto the new intake..the car idles at 700 or so in Park (when warm)..but drops to 600 when I put it in Drive or Neutral (with my foot on the brakes)...is it normal for it to drop when shifting?...and what do you mean that the ecu will need to adjust?..do I need to take off the battery leads and let the car sit over night? or is there an idle adjustment screw?

I did recieve a P0505 code for idle air control malfunction for starting it without the lines attached..the code is gone now and the idling is still as in the previous post...I'm just wondering the normal idling speed for a warmed up 2001 xterra in park, and its idling speed in drive/neutral with the brake on...ohh and is there a way to adjust it manually? or how does the ecu adjust? do I need to take off the battery...PLEASE HELP ME!

I don't know what normal idle is but anytime you change the air flow into the engine, the MAF will pick up on it and over a period of time the ecu will change the fuel to air ratio. You can reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery but it should auto learn by just driving enough miles

Oh thanks man...I was freakin out about it...but I'm not so worried now :)

I0Xterra0I, are you talking about these two lines?:

Yeah..without those connected to the intake my X kept stalling...now that they are connected it idles at 700-750 warm in Park and drops to 600 in Drive and Neutral, with the brake on...when given gas it accelerates awesome..im just wondering if my idle is off or normal for it to drop when shifting into gear?

I wouldn't have expected those lines to be vacuum lines, i thought they were breather lines. I was planning on replacing that bent, corrugated section with a smooth-wall piece of aluminum tubing, but keeping the filter box and everything else as is when I remove my baffles. Good to know my plan of putting a breather on each won't work, haha.

As far as your idle, that sounds completely normal. Mine does the same thing, it's normal for the idle in any vehicle to drop slightly when putting it into gear; as power is now being transferred through the transmission, thus putting a strain on the engine and making idle speeds drop.

Yeah do not try the breather thing...you'll think u f%#$%ed up ur car...until I found out that the throttle opening gave the lines a partial negative pressure, I was freakin out thinking I ruined my X...but yea u can remove everything just retrofit some vacuum connectors into ur new pipe and hook up ur tubes to that...it will result in giving those lines a partial negative pressure and it will be a-okay!
