: My CB install

Alright, so I have so many plans that I need to catch up on some small stuff. With that said here is MY install!

First off I got the Cobra 18 WXST II

There are 2 versions made.

Here is the first one

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/cobra_18wxst.jpg

And here is the new and improved version,

The Cobra 18 WXST II

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/18WXST2.jpg

Improvements on the later model include

-10 NOAA Weather Channels
-40 Channel scan
-Dual Channel watch
-Instant channel 9 and 19

Here is what the back of it looks like

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture002.jpg

There are 3 wires coming out of the back, they are power, ground, and memory

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture001.jpg

I cut them all off

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture003.jpg

here there are, separated from their mother....

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture004.jpg

I stripped them and threw some pins on there

Notice I made a whole bunch of them

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture067.jpg

I wanted to make my own harness and make the install as clean as possible.

Notice I snipped off the inline fuses? Well after the above plug, I ran those fuses someplace else because I did not want to dig through my dash to get to them. So, the negative continued on back toward the battery.

The power and memory went to a different kind of fuse holder. These are really cool. the top screws off and you throw a fuse in there.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture051.jpg

Took a step drill and drilled 2 holes

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture050.jpg

I did have to do a little modifying which included drilling and cutting this part on the inside

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture055.jpg

So the power and memory went to and from the fuses back to the plug where it met up with the ground wire once again

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture065.jpg

I tapped the ground into the existing ground, and (not according to this pic), I tapped the power into the cigarette lighter power. The fan comes on whenever the key is in the acc., running, or in the on position. I almost always run at least the stereo, and I run the CB while I am in town to talk to local X friends.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture069.jpg

Here is a better Idea of how it is set up.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture066.jpg

From that plug, I ran all the wire through plastic spiral casing. At this point I was all out of properly color coded wiring, so I tied 2 loops in power, one loop in memory, and no loops in the ground

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Picture071.jpg

So I mounted the fan right on the side so air is drawn through.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/intakemodwithPaul009-1.jpg

Finally I routed it through the dash, the grommet, and the eng. compartment to the battery. You will see the three ring terminals going straight to the positive and negative. Of course the memory and power went to positive while the ground went to negative.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/intakemodwithPaul007-1.jpg

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/intakemodwithPaul008-1.jpg

At this point, I disconnected the plug from the back of the CB. The reason I did this, is because I wanted to mount it in the dash so I had 2 single DIN consoles in the stock location.

Ok so my goal was to get both of these consoles to fit in the exact same spot as the old DVD player

There were A LOT of small, tedious things that I had to do to get this to work.

Drill another hole in the dash.....

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Friends044.jpg

I also bought two of these little piece from a stereo shop,

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Friends040.jpg

and cut them to fit. I HAD to mount this diagonally for this to work.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Friends042.jpg

The CB doesn't come with that hole that the knob is screwed into. I actually had to take the casing off of the CB, and drill and tap 2 identical holes on either side, so it mounted to the bracket. I could see all of the circuit boards and everything. I also took the casing to the grinding wheel and cut a triangle on the top and bottom of the casings on either side so that I could access this hole.

NOW the bracket goes on.......

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Friends043.jpg

Next, I finally installed it! It took me quite some time to get all of the stereo put together and installed but it works perfect.

I mounted it and threw it all back together. Here are some pics of the final product.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Friends069.jpg

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Friends065.jpg

and a close up of how clean the fuse mount went.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/Friends066.jpg

SPECIAL THANKS TO (in no particular order) Co-WOODY and GT GALLOP for the great advice and the hours on the phone helping me with my obsessive compulsion for trying to make it as clean as possible! Thank you to everyone else who helped me on the threads as well!!!!

Hope you enjoyed!-James

As far as the antenna and the coax go, I went super temporary in waiting for other mods.....Yup, can't open the hatch....

Where does everyone have their Mic mounted?

Alright, so I never showed you the coax or the antenna on mine. Mainly because the first install was super temporary.

Here is my Permanent set up. I think I am going to strengthen the mount but so far, no problems even at highway speed.

I bought a large Firestik base with a HD spring. The antenna is the 3' with tunable tip.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/DSC02955-3-1.jpg

I removed the stock antenna and mounted this in it's spot. Here are the 2 side by side to compare height.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/DSC02958.jpg

Here is the assembly pre-mounted:

3' tunable tip firestik
HD spring,
Firestik wide base for movement,
a 90 degree coax elbow,
3' coax
then it goes to a splitter (black box shown)-This splitter uses the CB antenna as the AM/FM antenna. You can see it has a coax output and a regular antenna output. You plug the antenna into the stereo and the coax into the radio. You can tune it with a pen screwdriver. YES, THIS MEANS THAT THE CB ANTENNA IS ALSO MY radio antenna
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/DSC02963.jpg

I ran the tuner splitter/tuner straight to the glove box
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/DSC02968-1.jpg

Looks good and hold up well
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/DSC02966.jpg

edit to add:I ended up removing the black knobs that i have there. In the final install it got in the way too much. I used a couple of metric screws and some fender washers instead. I filed just around the screws and it looks actually stock it turned out so good. I had to trim the bevel trim on the stereo to get it all to work but it is working and working well.

That is a stellar write-up! I thought my install was aggravating just running the antenna cable to the roof. Just toss the mic over your rear-view mirror if you don't want to drill into the X. If not just buy a mic mount, it is a little 3-prong piece of metal that has 2 or so screws to hold the back tab on the mic. Hope that helps

Great writeup. I didn't want to drill my dash so I velcro'd my mic holder to the dash, or just velcro the mic to the dash. There are also mic holders that hang off the mirror that can be bought at truckstops.

I am impressed with the Cobra 18 WX ST II. It works so much better than my previous CBs.

soccerbrace
12-31-2007, 12:53 PM
This is the only CB I have ever owned actually, so I have nothing to compare it too, but the price is right, (especially with an e-bay auction) and the single DIN size is EXACTLY what the CB manufacturers have needed to do. As far as the velcro, I will just have to check with a truck stop. I work for a trucking company so I could just ask around.

So the memory and power wire both go to the positive terminal? Or is one supposed to go the pos terminal, and the other go to a power line that isnt active when the key isnt in the ignition?

I ask this because i got the exact same CB for christmas. I casually read through the directions, but didnt read them in detail. Im waiting to install it untill I get my shrock rear bumper.

I just installed the same CB in my 07. The red goes to switched power and the orange goes to always hot. I cheated and tapped into the adapter harness for the stereo.
Here's how mine looks:

I just drilled the factory stereo brackets (one hole each side). Let me know if you want more info.

They both go to positive. You will not drain the battery if that is your concern. The CB has to be turned on to do that. Even so, I have heard of it being left on overnight numerous times and I have done so myself. not a problem

The problem that I have heard with running the wiring to some place else other than straight to battery is whine. The CB will whine in linear congruence to the RPM. Why are you waiting for your bumper to install it?

Personally, I try to do only one mod at a time (which never works out) so that I can put more concentration on each individual install.

idk i cant find a place for the cb right now...and i cant find a place to put the antenna without makin holes.. after i saw ur setup i had enough guts to take it out and u kno where u have ur fuses...i installed my bass knob there for my speakers.. lol it came out really clean and i was really happy i did it myself...

soccerbrace

You can buy a bracket which mounts outside for the ant. You can do it without holes. Why don't you add a fuse panel?

Ehsan
04-28-2008, 02:19 PM
what would i need the fuse panel for? i mean ive had a cb before and the fuse hasnt really gone out.. i have one bass knob there and am thinkin of another idea for the other whole

soccerbrace
04-29-2008, 02:11 AM
Well when you run a lot more accessories, it is a good practice to also have a separate fuse panel. When you are only running about 2 or 3 more accessories, then you do not need to.

What's wrong with running the CB from under your seat?

Ehsan
06-23-2008, 12:59 PM
a cb is a good idea. but no u would need another antenna a different one..they are not the same and do totally different things i guess u could say. but no it does not have to be big like mine.. it can be as long as a foot..BUT the longer the better range u get. Mines like 5 feet tall..and there are alot of rules to follow when setting up the cb aslo

All you need to do is find your location for your CB, your coax, and your antenna. Then choose your power source.

Did you get the magnetic antenna? If so, I would recommend that when you pull it off, PULL STRAIGHT UP! Even if you have to move it over 1 inch! The magnet is strong as hell and will hold through the apocalypse.

Jdubbau02
06-24-2008, 06:14 AM

Ehsan
06-24-2008, 08:05 AM
actually the antenna i have was real cheap, its just a "whip" cost like 25 plus the housing. which was like 10, anyways. like james said a location, then ur antenna cable which is the coax, finding where u want to put the antenna so u can get the coax into the cab. mines on the back so it comes in thru the hatch

from the rear bring it in from the left side..there is like a tube tat wires go thru u can take that off run it thru there and then put it back then take the left side of the panels off and send the wire up front

heres the story....

i had this kenwood 911 in dash dvd that i got from my uncle who is a car dealer, which he just took out of a truck and didnt want it. so i took it and put it into my car. with my system. touch screen and all and everything. first model dvd that came out. I loved the thing. wired so u dont have to be in park to watch it.lol. anyways a while later i picked up a add on GPS for like 175 whcih was CHEAP AS HELL! it was part of the kenwood thing so everythign was touch on the screen. loved it even more.. then i sold my camry which it was in.. so i decided hey why not sell this too and get a double din with already built in GPS. well i put it on ebay and this whole thing sold for $600. which i myself was pretty impressed for being SO old. Money came in i talked to the guy about shipping . he said he didnt care and not to insure it.. just wanted it quick..THEY GUY was so nice he even answered some business questions that i had.lol, so i shipped it out with USPS. my DUMBASS Not using my head . i did not insure it i did nothing NO TRACKING noTHING!!! and weeks later he said it hasnt come and filed a claim with paypal. SO i went thru that whole mess. Paypals website wasnt working properly and they said i ahvetn been responindg when it shows that i have been. well he then put a dispute.. what is this exactly..cuz im having the same problem

The doublesided tape is a thin layer of stuff that is kind of like foam with glue both sides. It is bought in a roll and IIRC is with all the other tape in the office supplies dept.

Temps are in the 80/90s and it's holding well. I have two small strips holding the mic holder to the dash (about 3/8" x 1" each).

Back when I lived in New Zealand I used doublesided tape to fasten the CB bracket to the dash because I didn't want to drill holes. It worked well for that application too.

I think it was just cheap stuff. I think it's made by Scotch or 3M. It has green plaid on the outside to cover the sticky stuff.

Looks good and hold up well

Nice setup James. I'm always looking for better ways to mount my antenna. Please show more shots of the mount. Is that mounted to the cowl metal or plastic? How are you liking the splitter? Have you had the setup installed long?
I would love to get my antenna down off the roofrack but also don't want to chop things up. One day....when the finance controller allows a shrock bumper I'll probably mount the antenna on that.

That allows the CB antenna to be used as the radio antenna too. It splits off the frequencies that the radio uses.

Tim, I only have one shot of the mount so far and it is not a good one. I removed the stock antenna and it's mount (2 10mm bolts) and I mounted this on the wiper cowl on the plastic. The coax was really close and I did have to do some customization. I cut a larger hole in order to allow room for the coax/in order to draw the ant away from the side. So it is mounted to the Plastic. I am fine with where it is mounted but I am most likely going to design a bracket for a more secure mounting.

I have yet to test the CB, because I am waiting on one more CB component then I have to put in another new fuse holder. I didn't notice anything wrong with Radio Reception. I have had it installed for about 2 weeks now

Where did you get that splitter?

Edit: Also, how is the antenna base attached to the truck?

Got the coax and the Antenna from an audio store that sells CB stuff.

I attached it in the stock location. It took tons of modifying of the wiper cowl. I had to cut a little to get it done right.

I have a fender washer on the inside. My only complaint is I got a medium duty antenna spring and I should have got a light duty. It is a little too stiff. It is not a problem though unless someone of course purposefully messes with it.

Anyone try mounting a CB in a '01 @ the bottom of the consel in place of that space that can't really fit much and has an AC outlet. I'm eyeing that spot something serious.

All ready got a Bearcat 68, which is a sweet radio I would hate to part with. I got to look to see if it would fit.

Alright, so after much modifying it, I made the whole thing easier. I ran ground to my chassis. I ran memory and power straight to the battery cable which is in the stock location. I bought a pre-made plug for the wires, and it works perfectly because the wires are nearly the same color. It is easy to unplug and there are no flathead screwdrivers involved.

James, that's a very nice installation. Quick question: How bad is the radio interference if you have the stereo and the cb on at the same time?

I really like your antenna setup and I'm thinking of copying it, but I'm curious about the interference. A small problem, I know, but I like listening to tunes, even on low volume, while I'm chatting with someone.

It is actually fine, The splitter takes care of it. :)

Thanks for the compliment! I think I am going to ground it at a different location though, possibly many locations.

Score! I was worrying about how to take apart the center console and found this link (http://www.abt.com/images/products/PDF_Files/997581_install.pdf).

Finally I routed it through the dash, the grommet, and the eng. compartment to the battery. You will see the three ring terminals going straight to the positive and negative. Of course the memory and power went to positive while the ground went to negative.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/soccerbrace/intakemodwithPaul007-1.jpg

So if both the memory and the power go to the positive on the battery, what's the point of running 2 wires all the way to the battery? Why not just run one wire into the cab and then connect both the memory and power to that one wire? I know this question has already been asked, but I'm still unclear. Am I correct in assuming the memory is the orange wire and power is the red?

Also, where did you find the metal brackets to mount it with? I've been googling for them and havent had any luck so far.....

Lastly, kind of splitter is it? What are the specs?

Thanks again for a great write up.

Got your PM.

I wanted to run both of the wires to a constant 12V source so that is the route I took. There are 2 separate wires that need this 12V. You can run the + to switched 12v if you want, but you shouild defintily run the memory to constant or it will be pointless.

I could have ran 1 wire to the cab and used a terminal block, and branched out from there as well if I wanted to. I chose not to though because there are 2 separate size fuses (1A and 2A) and they come from the factory that way. The way that I ran it, you can use 2 separate fuses, and if you were going to do one wire split into 2, then you would want to only use 1 fuse (since you would want it close to the battery)for 2 different wires that come from the cobra factory as having 2 different ampered fuses :)
