: Sometimes, doesn't want to start.

So, here's the long of it. I have a 2006 Xterra, just over 100k miles on it. I recently replaced the spark plugs, about... 1500 miles ago?

The deal is, some times the truck doesn't start. Trying to start, the starter runs strong, nothing out of the ordinary for normal starting, except normally, after roughly one second of cranking, it starts up. Today was the 4th time in the last month that that the engine would crank and crank, but not start. The engine wasn't even trying to start. So, I'd try, crank if for a few seconds, stop, let it sit, try again. Again, like I said, it's not sounding weak or anything during this process. When it does start, it's usually cranking for a few seconds, and then fires up like nothing was wrong. The first two times doing this, it was fairly low on fuel (light was on, drove it to the gas station and it took about 19 gallons one time, 18 the other, so it wasn't THAT low on fuel) The only other thing that was consistent is that I parked on the street, so the truck was tilted towards the passenger side, but I can't imagine that having that big an effect. Also, I've never had this happen twice in a day, and always on the first start up of the day, so that may be something to consider.

After starting the truck runs perfectly normal. After looking at the Haynes troubleshooting, it suggests either a fuel issue or and ignition issue. My uneducated thoughts are that it's a fuel issue, because I assume if it was an ignition issue, would I not notice performance problems while driving?

I'm not mechanically incompetent (I do most minor repairs myself, anyways, assuming I can find something telling me how), so anything that can be suggested I check without major mechanical disassembly, I'll try. I'd like to try to pinpoint the problem myself, and repair it myself, if I feel confident.

So any suggestions on what could be the issue and how I can check would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

first rule out stupid stuff like the battery or battery connectors. ive been told that when a battery starts to go it will act up with no rhyme or reason. and also if the conectors are loose it will act funky.

My 2006 Offroad is doing the exact same thing. I recently received a letter from Nissan giving me an extension on the warranty for the fuel sending unit. I have 58000 miles on mine, and the warranty is good until 72000. I'm thinking about taking it in and seeing if that's the problem. This morning it was about 30 degrees and it started right off like always, but at lunch it didn't want to start. Cranks real hard, but its like its not getting fuel. It could also maybe be the fuel filter. Let me know if you found a solution. Mine also only seems to do it when I'm at a quarter tank or below.

I got that warranty extension as well. Unfortunately, my xterra was over 72,000 when I bought it. I may see if they'd be willing to honor it anyways.

Gentlemen and Ladies,
I am in the exact same situation with an 2006 xterra automatic. i just purchased it 2 months ago and they replaced the fuel sending sensor. And if the vehicle sits in the cold overnight i have to try and starting about four times until the vehicle will stay running. And when i am cranking on it i only crank for maybe 3 seconds and then immediately shut it off and try again. On fourth time it fires up like it nothing is wrong with it. Ecm modules do have recalls on them. My mechanic says that the plugs are do for a change and the throttle body is pretty dirty. Who know i absolutely love the vehicle. Wouldn't change a thing about it. Just wish we could all get this figured out. Furthermore, my battery is brand new and i have a second battery in the garage just in case. (I feel battery is the not the issue). If i was to take a guess i would say ecm, fuel pump, mass cold air sensor, or maybe timing belt. Who knows?
