: Error codes
louis2 12-12-2007, 07:23 PM I am brand new to this forum. Here is my question... I recently purchased a 2002 Nissan Xterra for my son. We immediately replaced the muffler and pipe back to the converter due to an exhaust leak. My son also replaced the battery. Soon thereafter an amber check engine light came on. My son then changed the fuel filter (under the vehicle near gas tank). I borrowed a scanner device from a mechanic friend and received 2 error codes:
P1444 Purge Volume Control Valve
and
D328 Knock sensor circuit High Input (Bank 1).
The vehicle has a 3.3l engine in it.
The vehicle has 77k miles on it and other wise in great shape. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in Advance!
Jim
json3904 12-12-2007, 08:18 PM the pvc valve is the one triping the light.... i have had the knock sensor code on my X for well over a year now with no light..... i dont personaly know where the pvc valve is but either soccarbrace or anthony will know....
louis2 12-13-2007, 05:41 PM I was suspect of two modules failing at the same time. Can anyone else confirm or deny what Jason said. Also does anyone know where the PCV valve is for a 2002 Xterra and how much they normally cost? Is this a dealer part of is it carried by an autoparts store> I am pleasantly surprised at how helpful everyone is here. I really appreciate any/all help in advance! Thanks Jason for taking the time..

Ricer-X 12-13-2007, 05:57 PM i have also had the same code for wel over a year now, no light either
my mech buddy believes the knock sensor is loose
i dont really worry about it, my truck runs fine with no CEL so to hell with it i say, lol
im at 67k miles on an 04 with the 3.3
json3904 12-14-2007, 11:11 AM i went to autozone and put in your info and then typed in the keywords "pvc valve" and this is what i found...... http://www.autozone.com/selectedZip,77566/initialAction,partProductDetail/initialpartType,00541/initialR,APP728375/initialvehicleId,2740202/shopping/selectZip.htm
hope it helps
k1w1t1m 12-14-2007, 06:55 PM What has been said above sounds correct. The knock sensor doesn't bring on the CEL. You can either ignore the KS code or replace the KS = $$$ or bypass it with a 560K ohm resistor. Ignoring it costs a mpg or two and a little performance, however it is almost unnoticeable.
louis2 12-14-2007, 07:18 PM Jason,

PCV valve cost around $5.00 @ autozone. I changed mine about 3 times already. It is not hard to change it. You go to Autozone they can show you exactly where PCV valve located. On knocking problem check make sure all hose connected or plug. Especially the one from the top of air filter housing is the one likely disconnect when they change or check air filter. If the hose are connected you need to adjust the timing to where it suppose to be (
info is on sticker under the hood) After you have done all these fix your knocking problem will be gone.
Good luck
Big AL 29 12-26-2007, 09:21 AM Malfunctionng PCV valve is usually due to sludge.
You said you just bought it right? The previous owner probably did not change the oil on a regular basis. Open the oil cap and look down with a flashlight to see if its all gunked up. Sludge will gunk the PCV valve up and make it inoperative.
You may want to take it and have it flushed and the oil changed out THEN change out the PCV valve.

if the thing is reading knock sensor then it has proab gone bad and adjusting the timing wont help..... the sensor is still bad so the ecu will still try to correct a problem that isnt there hence the knock sensor.... if you know what i mean....
soccerbrace 12-27-2007, 03:06 AM As far as the PCV.....
ou can clean them. Really hose them down inside with a brake parts cleaner or carb & choke spray. When you shake it back and forth, the check-valve inside the plastic case should rattle ... slide freely back and forth.
For parts like this, I've found its best to go with OEM over NAPA, Fram, etc ...
sanboy 01-10-2008, 06:47 PM knock sensor wont trip the ENGINE LIGHT ..

i dont see why you need to pull the motor. from what i was told you just need to take the intake manifold off.... i have heard from on enissan tech that his arm was skinny enough he said he has reached down and changed it with out removing any parts.... i dont know how true that was but it shouldnt be that bad..... the 1000-1300 is a little high to....
k1w1t1m 01-11-2008, 05:14 AM That sounds a bit too much. He does have a SC but prices I have seen are usually $5/600 dollars. SC and lower intake have to come off. The whole engine does not have to be pulled. I think I posted a link here somewhere to the Maxima harness and KS relocation.
mspears 01-22-2008, 03:27 PM I had the knock sensor read bad also. I put some fuel cleaner in the gas, ran the gas out and the sensor went off and has stayed off for a few months now. Can't remember exactly what the cleaner was called, something like 10,000 mile, got it at Advanced. Was only a few dollars, saved me $117. I would try it first.
