-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Early September 2010 my friend was selling his Black 2002 se. He wanted out of the loan and I needed a new car. I paid him the remainder of the loan and walked away with a nice truck. A hell of a lot better than a 1995 toyota tercel.

After driving it a couple days I searched online and found this forum. We all know what happens when we first found this side. We got the bug. He's bone-stock minus the removal of the step rails and mud flaps. Great truck and looked great for the miles on the body.

Two weeks later I was leaving campus and I turn the key. All I heard was that CLICK noise. Aww hell. I Tried to jump it for a while, but no go. I though it had to be the starter. So my friend and I ran to autozone and throw in a new starter in right in the parking lot. After that the truck started right up. Thought I solved the problem

Well bout a week later Im pulling into autozone to pickup and replace worn pads and I turn the key, again noting.

The guy tested the battery and told me it was shot. The cells were bad. (If i wasn't stuck dead I would have brought it to my work and tested it with digital battery tester. (I don't really like autozone much). Purchased a new battery and drove it to work, retested the new battery and found it wasn't charging. (again, hate autozone). My friend and I found out the alternator was the real problem from the beginning. Replaced that, bought an AGM battery (what a red top is made of) from work and put that in after returning the other to autozone. (Don't think I have to repeat who Im not fond of)
Least I won't have to worry bout em.
But enough of that.

Next came the real modding. Ordered up the shackles off AC. Love how beefy they are!

http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/lifting/6a8b58b0.jpg

The sway bar. It is coming off, just not that night.

I installed some LED lights in the engine bay as utilities for night time oil checking. Check out the DIY in my sig. I also added some hells and free wally-world roof lights with a B&M light bar. (wiring soon to be done)

I ordered up the Loadwarror through my work. I wanted a better place to put my spare rather than take up room under or inside my truck. My jeepin buddy doesn't have a bracket for his High-lift he inherited, so I told him we could put it on my truck. Plus it looks badass.
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/fc730483.jpg
Now if you look closely you might see the distruction of a warn out passanger tire... Yep my friend got new tires and never did the alignment. So after much research I went ahead and ordered up some 265/75/16 Duratracs.

I was like a kid on xmas morning when I dropped my truck off at the tire place. He calls me and I pull up to see this!
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/42de6aa7.jpg
I smiles, just a little bit. I love how quite those tires are and balzieness of them.

After that, I had time to remove the sway bar. Once you put the tire on the roof, you really do get a lot of room under there.
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/4f08e0fb.jpg

In the process of OSPHOing the underside. My friend and I will be doing both our frames and possibly repainting them to deal with the NE rust war.

Did my diff recently, and came out amazing. Will be posting pics as soon as we get a sunny day.

Nice job and a good start! :D

Man I feel for you guys up in the NE having to deal with the rust issues. That's a whole new level of maintenance I fortunately don't have to worry with.

Keep the pics coming man!

Yeah they are a PITA! LOL

vandebogart
10-27-2010, 02:37 PM
They really aren't that bad.. once you've taken your bumpers on and off about 10 times lol. All you have to do is remove the biggest part of the bumper and then you have access to the clips. All you need is a long handled flat-head screw driver to get em. When reassembling, put the clips on the removed piece, that way the bumpers just snap right in. I didn't do that the first time and couldn't get the bumpers back together.. quite a few choice words were said lol

My buddy tim and I recently Monsterlined his Jeep (went to bed at 6 am that night) and between coats of primer and bedliner we worked on my front grill and light bezels.

Deciding on if I want to do the bumper satin black still. Prob going to do everything in satin black.

Thoughts.

Nice Lightbar :D

Ricel
10-31-2010, 05:30 PM
Haha it def does! Canteens to get a day to hit up the other plastics.

Yeah that light bar, pretty sweet one if I say so my self thanks to that guy up there /\ :wink-big: I highly recomend. One thing I'd chain is the bottom hole size. Couldn't really fit a socket into it so a little improv.

Ok so this thing needs a little update.

Finally wired up my roof lights. I recently had a misshap with a parking garage warning bar being set too high. Well got a nice little scare about ripping off my lights. This calls for fast removal if needed.

Had this plug sitting at work so all said and done it came out I think nicely.

Cb antennas mounted. Went with a 4' firestik tunable and hatch mount. I also found the firering cable to compliment it. Picking up my cb from work tomorrow. Pics to follow shortly.

Now just have to save up for the AC 3" 3pack.

Heard people not liking AC UCAs any issue there? Was going to go with the AC uca, torsion, bilsteins, and leaf packs. Any one have a better idea?

Hey Ricel, next time you're out taking pictures, would you mind snapping one of just a side profile, and maybe the rear of one of your front tires when they're cranked? I'm thinking of getting the tires/size you got. Thanks! X is looking good!

Looking good Bro

See you this weekend on the trail?

Ricel
04-10-2011, 07:57 PM
Ok its been a while so time for some updates!

NeXterra ran the April fools run, and though I needed to update some stuff before the trails.

First thing first, finally got rid of those ugly Baja light and replaced them with the hella 500ff's.
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/electronics/276e58db.jpg

Fixed my engine bay lights. Added another set of LEDs and it came out so much brighter.

I had a co2 tank from my homemade kegorator and used that as a dual purpose OBA system. The regulator attached to a compressor disconnect and my 25 ft hose with an air chock. Mounted nicely with a quick grip agains my OR box.

Finished my cb install using the uniden, an 18ft fire ring, and a 4' firestick tunable.

Finally finished up the 'most outa my stock airbox' with a K&N drop in and resonator plugs. Def a little more pick me up.

The weekend wheeling went great, up until my alternator crapper out with a little too much mud.

http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/wheelin/april%20fools%20run%20040911/33ee4dd9.jpg
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/wheelin/april%20fools%20run%20040911/bedc4f1f.jpg

Limped home with out the alternator, thank god for my Duracel AGM praying the thing wasn't permanently gooned!

Got back and hosed down the engine bay. Then took WD-40 to that sucker. After a few good love taps with a hammer brought that sucker back to 14.3volts!
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/wheelin/april%20fools%20run%20040911/7073d23e.jpg

I'll get some more pics up later tomorrow, specially the side shot for you buddy.

Lobo shelf installed.

I saw the white closet shelfs and almost bought one when I bumped into the garage organizing section and got ahold of these grey ones.
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/addons/9fcfc49a.jpg

Hung it up with the aluminum l brackets and gromets, best wrteup ever.

But for the front I'm using dyneema soft shackles (same material used in synthetic winch cable) and I spliced them into loops capable of being opened. They hold about 3,000lbs so I think the plastic clips are going to have to snap first.
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/addons/e893c3da.jpg
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/addons/2890854a.jpg

I posted up about these sometime last year and didn't get too much of a positive response, possibly it just hasn't fully hit the off road market yet. If around the world Volvo ocean racers are using them instead of their huge stainless shackles they gota do something right. :wave-big: (check out wmrigging.com for more info)

The garage grey shelfs are beefier and a little heavier. Better for bumps when they are empty.

The rear backup lights are installed! This corrects my reverse lights lighting up the night squirrels. I can finally see the mailbox when I backup at night. (too many close calls).

http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/electronics/rear%20lights/3e3262e5.jpg

I ordered up a xoskel rear lightbar and wanted everything removable so added in a connector that fit nicely under the hatch.

http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/electronics/rear%20lights/48e0ecfa.jpg

http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/electronics/rear%20lights/87fe7078.jpg

I have a double rocker switch (on-off-on) which will allow me to manually turn them on, turn them off, or pull signal from the reverse lights and have them light up when in 'R'.

http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/cnsellon/xterra/electronics/rear%20lights/0f4cfaca.jpg

Gifts came in the mail from AC!

Power coated engine and front skid. They were out of bare steel, but AC's customer service was at it again taking care of it's customers.

Also finished cutting off my bent up exhaust, pinching your exhaust on rocks, not as fun as it sounds. Threw on a ricer tip for $12 and the gasses won't blow into my body as it were before.

And personal words, I loved my tires! They preformed amazing through the crappy NE winter with ice and all. this past week I was able to kick my buddy in his heep on some muddy trails. my mod bug does whispers from time to time to me "33's you want 33's... Depending on what your doing with your truck, (lots of highway) you might pick up a set of mudders on crappy rims for any OR trips and leave the dura's as your DD, I was looking at this option.

Well I finally sucked it up and mounted my fusion radio. This thing is sweet, I get satellite, aux, am fm, VHF (for all my weather reports), and even full (yes full!) iPod interface control.

Well since I went big instead of going home on the cb, it had to take the place of the stock radio. With that, the fusion was jammed into the catch all behind the shifters.

Bought some fiberglass and resin and fabbed up a nice mount for it.

Those bars actually help with hood glare. Unlike normal bars, Daves do sit lower in the basket, causing the Hellas to sit just a tad under the basket. causing the beam to clear the hood and fall right infront of it!

Yep, hopefully after the BL gets installed this month, I'll order up some new craigers with 4" bs and some brand new 33" duras to get that more aggressive look. They worked amazingly in the NE winter and won't go with anything else.

Ok club, need the advice of the masses.

Ordering up the 3" AC lift on Monday. UCA setup with IAB, blis shocks all round (rears for long travel)

Question stands, what do I want to do for the rear? I was thinking 3pack from AC to go along with the AC shackles I already have from my PML.

3 pack with regular lift shackles is a risky proposition- talk to BadBet and RacerXXL

Just too big? I don't want to loose my safe COG by any means. I know ppl hit up the 3pack with revolvers, and down the road will swap put the shackles with revolvers and custom springs, but my stock ones are perfectly fine for the time being.

There's no guarantee any AAL will add what it is supposed to. You could go with the revolvers now, or put back the stock shackles.

DUUUUUUUddddeeeee.!!!

Just finished the 2" BL... That was a shit load more work than I thought It was going to be! Agh thank god a buddy of mine, Ryan helped out. Hahaha!

But very worth it as all these mods seem to be. Couple snags. Had to cut two bolts off.. given.

a welded body nut break scare later became a false alarm, and have to drill a few holes in the AM, But other than that, Id say she came out pretty well.

And as all have said, there is sooooo much room in there!

Did you get an aftermarket gas cap recently?

Or did you extend the fuel line with the lift and not tighten them properly maybe?

Ricel
08-25-2011, 06:09 AM
Nope, no aftermarket gas cap or fuel lines...

Followed all the lines and no cracks splits. Only thing I can think of is the canister.... It says the valve cap is open...

Badbet
08-25-2011, 06:47 AM
There's a shield in the right front wheel well with two 10mm bolts. There's like 4 lines behind that shield, there's a good chance one of ems broken and it's your evap line. My truck threw the same codes after the BL (massive evap leak and gas cap); go to autozone or advance with a little length of the original hose and have them give you like 6-10" of fuel line. The rest is pretty straight forward.

Ricel
08-26-2011, 05:50 AM

That looks great Curt! I never knew you were a mind reader, that's also an impressive skill. When I first started thinking about doing the hitch flip, I wanted to find a way to make the OEM bumper work with it. I thought there would have to be a lot more cutting than that, I'm a little relieved to see that I was wrong.

Hats off to you man, that looks awesome!

Well then hats off the Chuck! Yeah That grinder worked like a charm. Threw a cutting wheel on there and bam. Suggestions, take your time, work slowly. And your going to have to re drill your bumper for relocation.

Looking over at it, I'm going to say to get this all to work, a 2" body lift is required. With out it, your bumper won't be able to fit under the hatch.

Ricel
09-09-2011, 06:38 AM
One question would you tow with it like that?

To answer this, the hitch support angle is a little different. I'd like to see what any mechanical engineers would say about the difference in tension from correct to flipped.

But since I was able to get all three bolts attached to the frame / hitch and torques to the correct spec, I'd feel safe with towing a small trailer or a small inflatable boat for my rents no problem. I would have to get a 4" dropped hitch now, but in all essence, I don't to any 'towing' except when pulling my jeep buddy out or trying to flat ground pull start the jeep with just the clutch. (don't ask)

Ricel

Church, get yer ass down here and well do the hitch flip in an afternoon.

KChurch86
09-09-2011, 07:39 AM
That could be arranged. I just read your How-To (nice work on that too, btw) and saw that the job requires a BL...for serious? I don't have/want a BL right now. Why exactly is the BL necessary?

Sent from my DROID X2 using AutoGuide App

Ricel
09-09-2011, 07:49 AM
because of the way the hitch sits, it gets in the way of the bumper. even if you cut everything you can, its still two inches higher than where the original bumper was.

Theres a cross beam in the top of the bumper (under where you stand) for support. You can't cut that, and it won't fit with the hitch flip.

You would have to go a custom route for the bumper to make it fit.

side: why don't you want a BL yet?

Ah, I see now...so the flip itself is possible without a BL, but there wouldn't be any room for the bumper. That kinda sucks.

I don't want a BL because I'm still planning on doing a full 3" SL at some point. Stupid Massachusetts lift laws (which they are getting more strict on) state the maximum lift on an Xterra is 2.8". ( (Wheelbase x wheel track) divided by 2200 = MAX allowable height...so 104.3 x 60 = 6,258 / 2200 = 2.84" max lift).

While I personally would have absolutely NO problem driving an "illegal" (too tall) truck, I wouldn't be able put up with the hassle and I need to keep my truck DD-friendly.

Ok so this thing needs a little update.

Finally wired up my roof lights. I recently had a misshap with a parking garage warning bar being set too high. Well got a nice little scare about ripping off my lights. This calls for fast removal if needed.

Love that PLUG!! That looks so clean. I have a set of lights I want to run from the roof into the cab and set up the switches, etc. My main concern was drilling a hole to run the lines, but not being able to make it water tight. That looks awesome!!!

Roof basket. Yakima actually sells a highlift holder for their racks, that plug can be found at westmarine.com I did a writeup a while back I think and I should have the part number. Off the top of my head, it's a aquasignal 5 prong waterproof surface mount connector. With that google might be your friend.

If ya go that route, hit me up with any questions.

Hey now, don't be knocking to 2x4's ive seen some great one son here! It's all about knowing the truck, lots of us 4x4s run the trails in 2high for agood while before we need to go into 4wd.

Hitting with a PML and a nice set of tires and see what she can do. Use the money you saved with the 2x4 and drop in a locker on that thing and you'll keep up with us for sure.

Mine is 4x2, and I already have shrocks front and rear and I have a 3"SL and a 2"BL sitting at the house for when I get home from deployment :)
I'm also trying to sell my '84 Trans AM to fund a 4x4 swap in the future... I've looked into quite extensively, and I've seen guys do it for $2000 or less.

Don't sell yourself short on your 4x2. A lot of people have been surprised by what they can do. Besides, if you ever decide to get a 4x4 the mods you do to the one you have now can be removed and used on the other. Just keep any stock parts you remove so you can put them back on if you sell it.

Ricel, hurry up and install that stuff and post some pics! I'm sure it's driving you crazy having it sitting there waiting to have time to do it. That's going to be so sweet.

So its possible to transform a 4x2 into a 4x4????? Thats definitely something ill be interested in doing. thanks for the info, hope you have a safe deployment, i look forward in seeing a build thread for your bl's.

If i sell the X, ill get an 05-07 im not sure the parts are interchangeable, (i doubt it though). I own the truck so ill do everything in my power not to finance a newer gen x. But im really diggin the 07.. Ill look into the 4x4 mod and see what needs to be done. If it works that would be great, i would never get rid of the truck if its 4x4. No, i have not pushed this truck at all. My wife bought it brand new a couple years before we met, bout a year ago we bought a cadillac cts 07. Since i get dirty at work, i drive the truck and she drives the cts. So i have recently started doing small things here and there. The next thing will be to get rid of the RF stereo system and do a major upgrade. have a good day guys, im going to start a Diy thread for fitting projector housings in the 04- headlight assembly...

What should be my next step? Put two bandaids on er and touch up the pain cracks with fingernail polish? New door? repair shop?

I was going to suggest using a suction cup puller or the hair dryer/canned air (paint-less dent remover). But you have too many creases and wrinkles along the window edge.

The cheapest way will probably be just to replace the door. Preferably with a door that's BLACK. lol Otherwise if you don't have a salvage yard with the same make/model/year/color, you may have to resort to getting it painted to match. Which will probably cost $200-$400. All depends on the body shop.

So since I beat her up a little, I fet the need to give her a little more edge on the trail.

Painted most of her plastics with the rustolium bed liner. A spray on black paint with micro grit mixed in. Did it on the rear quater plastics and Hitch Flip bumper and loved it.

Painted the grill, light bezels, front mudflapps and wheel well trim as well as the wiper cowl. Ill do up the pinstripe plastics soon, and I think Im doing the roof rack as well. (prob with a smooth paint though). Then getting some Xterra roof rack vinyl cut from creepy in white.

Starting to really like the subtle white accents!

My buddy caught me ripping off the grill and laughing at me.

Snow day yesterday! Went tooling around for the morning pulling people outa snowbanks then headed over to the shop for a couple hours for a mod day. Had a nice little list.

Replace rear brake shoes, reseal gas tank sending unit, and fiiinnally install my IAB that's been sitting in my truck for 7 months.

Hit up the brakes first. Hey when the floor jack you have doesn't work, improv.

Come to find out, the new brake shoes give you the pin for the E-brake cable, but not the C-clip that really needs to be replaced... Went around in the snow storm to find a set. 5$ later.

Started removing the gas tank sending unit. (got to love the inspection port!) if you ever find your self removing this thing and just think you snapped bolts don't worry. I was freaking out first little bolt I pulled out. Haha I think we all were and didnt calm down till the 3rd one was out.

safety nazi alarm went off in my head. Its not recommended to pull on a shackle parallel to the bolt. Most allow up to 45* at like 1/3 the load rating.

So finally had a day where i sucked it up and removed one of the leafs out of the AC 3 pack.

I was having issues with my packs being too tight that the shackles kep inverting on full droop. So bad that on heavy breaking, they would invert. By taking the bottom one out on each, it seems to have fixed this issue. Theres a NEXterra run this weekend. Well find out then if its all good.

Coming off the stock air box, to a heavily modified 90* 3". (probably the hardest part was getting the 90* to mate to the removable part of the box.) Fit the black tube in and cut the 90 untill the 90 sits flush with the fender wall !Important.

The box like thing on the wall got in the way. Cut a piece out and reweld.

Another challenge we faced was the fender fitting. You really have to cut all the way down to the buldge. I taped it off following the snorkels lines and slowly cut more and more. Finished it off with some edging I have.

Painted and temp snorkel head on. Real one in mail.

Because of the firewall, my lines are limited to the current angle. Solution I've come up with is to heat up the tube with a heat blanket enough to slowly bring it closer to the A Pillar. This will keep it tighter on the truck away from tree branches.

Yeah, that will be happening. Have not glued the stack to the 45 test for that reason.

Could only hammer the inner fender so much. If I did 2" tubing, I could have gotten a closer angle. But then would have had a 2"-3" and then a 45 before the snorkel.

Just to give this little guy an update, the weather is getting nicer, and that means the mod bugs usually rolls in strong around now.

Had some time, so I updated my DIY snorkel. Took a new pipe, and heated it up to give it just a dash of bend. 20 minutes with a heat gun and patience, lots of patinece gave me the perfect bend. Hit it up with a great coat of paint and she came out real nice.

The PVC snorkel head is growing on me. i tried to pick up a E-bay head but its a dash too small (just won't fit the 3" pvc pipe) also kinda stands a little high with the 45* bend. So keeping the other one for now.

Not in the Way at All

Next is some tires. Going with 33x12.5x15's sittin on some cheepo 15x8x4.5" craiger's. Expect some cutting. Something im getting use to. hehe.

After that I may go the skidrow to custom swing out bumper once summer hits, thanks to Xtacular and Silver Dude's idea over on CX. Getting more welding on under my belt, and well see. By that time if steel prices come down, ill look at doing full custom.
