Drake 08-25-2010, 07:06 AM Kelty is the best bang for the buck in my opinion. Good quality and very affordable. Drawbacks would be weight and packing size in most cases I know with Kelty. Really no quality drawbacks as compared to other brands. Honestly can't believe you found that at Target!
If you don't need it right away, shop at campmor.com or sierratradingpost.com. Great deals usually on most things. Campmor has a lot of Kelty stuff normally.
Other brands I'd consider but probably more pricey would be:
Big Agnes
Black Diamond
Mountain Hardwear
Sierra Designs
Marmot
I have a Big Agnes and Kelty. I've had my Kelty over 10 years now. Both are ultralights though.
josx2 08-25-2010, 07:08 AM Kelty's are really good tents...they're not the typical Target/Walmart/Dicks brand of tents. They're sold at REI/EMS-camping type of stores.
I've got a Kelty 2 person that's pushing 10 yrs old & doesnt' show it's age. That tent is extremely easy to set up (something you definitely want when camping!). Just two shock poles criss-crossing doesn't get any easier than that ;-) & a piece of cake to clean out at the end of the trip...just open the door, lift the entire tent above your head, & shake all the debris out.
But double-check the dimesions of it (try to find it on Kelty's site...Target's has it listed as 26" wide which isn't correct). It stands 4' high, so keep that in mind for headroom (or lack-of when standing). & if you plan on sleeping 4, that'll be the only room you got mostly...there won't be much room inside for gear aside from a bag or two of clothes/etc..
williambelk587 08-25-2010, 08:22 AM Kelty 4-Person 3-Season Getaway Tent -Blue (7'8" x 6'8"x 4'10")
This is a good deal and will outlast any other tent in its price range.
Edit: those are the accurate dimensions for the tent in question.
ALifeLessHorizontal 08-25-2010, 09:09 AM I'm in love with my Marmot Tent. It's the Thor 2 person tent, but I trust the other designs too.
Getting kicked out of my house was softened knowing I had this tent to sleep in.
RockMozart13 08-25-2010, 09:39 AM there are so many different preferences when it comes to tents
i bought a Quest 4p tent a while back from dicks for $40, it lasted 3 years without any problems, sprung a small seam leak during my last trip, $5 worth of seam sealer (which your should really use on any new tent) and i spent a half hour with a garden hose trying to recreate the leak to no avail.
I also have a 3P Marmot Mutha Hubba $400 backpacking tent which is hands down the best tent i've ever spent a night in.
sometimes these lesser known brands hold up very well, but if 4 or 5 years down the line its worth the extra $100 to ward away any surprise leaks, annoying zippers, faded colors, then opt for a better tent.
...
x2 on Sierra Trading Post and REI.com
Sierra is always running atleast a 20% off sale and REI.com has a membership which runs $20 and gets you 10% off and free shipping on alot of items.
drbandkgb 08-25-2010, 09:46 AM Luke need to use one? I have 2 tents
merlinsrealm 08-25-2010, 11:49 AM I have used a few different tents. I like REI's Brand because they were ultralight and well as roomy. I have recently changed to a Marmot 3 person 3 season tent which I would also recommend.
xtacular 08-25-2010, 11:58 AM I run the REI Halfdome, had it for a few years now and love it. But any reputable brand, including Kelty, should serve you well.
Outdoorsman 08-25-2010, 12:14 PM Fits right on the Xterra.........Bought it through Nissan. I love it. You can just open the hatch and sleep inside and throw everything in the tent itself.

wapadingo 08-25-2010, 07:03 PM I think kelty is becoming like the north face. the north face has two levels of quality, one for dick's the other for true expedition style backpacking/trekking. i have the eureka zeus II for backpacking and its light as hell and was cheap, plus it has been really durable. I've backpacked with it on both coasts and a few places in between, including high winds that i've had to use an extra length of rope and tie it down to the ground beyond the 4 corners. i could put it up in a windowless, lightless room at midnight. weight and ease of pitching are the only true pros though. big agnes is probably one of the best tent companies out there and will be my next tent. marmot is great too, they make a durable nice product. no matter what tent you go with make sure to get seam sealer and seal in all the seams. i like to get messy with it and lay it on thick. it dosent look pretty but i havent been wet yet. good luck on your selection.
Xterror04 08-25-2010, 07:16 PM hey ros pm me the code please!
