: Trailer Hitch Install on 2000 xterra questions
blitzz 08-21-2010, 04:53 PM Hi guys and gals, questions I have on installing my hitch kit.
1. do i have to get a wiring kit for the trailer to attach to?
I noticed that i do have the oem plug at the passenger side at the rear, does the wiring kit just plug and play?
pic of the plug

2.Now if i do have to get a wiring kit, what kind is it?
3.When the wiring kit is set, where do i mount it?
4.Im getting the Tubular type trailer hitch, is this fairly strong to hold a trailer? possibly some light furnitures and clothes? reason is im moving to another state.. not so far about 700 miles away.
Any suggestions or reference would be greatly appreciated.
I just wanna get my install right the first time.
Thanks again :D
pro2amendment 08-21-2010, 05:01 PM An automatic can tow 5000lbs, 500lb tongue wt. I think less if a standard shift.
A Xterra tow package came with a Class III hitch rated for this, and is tubular. If your hitch is Class III you should be fine - just check the ratings.
You'll need a way to hook up the lights. The plug in wire is the easiest way (a 4 pin) - if you can find one. Ordering from Nissan sites online usually scores one.
If you plug in the wiring, I just wrap it around the tube hitch when not in use.
blitzz 08-21-2010, 05:17 PM oh ok so that wire kit from nissan it self is the one i need for the plug i posted right?
ill call a local Nissan dealer here and find out how much.
yeah im getting the tubular one from Etrailer. thanks for the info

Snow Chaser 08-21-2010, 05:42 PM If you are gonna tow anything big you need frame stiffeners to keep from bending or otherwise damaging the frame.
blitzz 08-21-2010, 05:50 PM Snow, Nothing too big, just a regular trailer from Uhaul perhaps.
ive seen a friend of mine haul the same load using the same tubular hitch, it was very fine working for him.
My only concern is the wiring for the lights for the trailer
Snow Chaser 08-21-2010, 05:57 PM I'm certainly not the expert on this, but I think you should be fine.

If you want to do it right, you should take note of this. You won't find out you need it until its too late...
Snow Chaser 08-22-2010, 06:58 PM Oh btw if a mod could move this into the correct section that would be great.

I am looking at ordering a "U-Haul" brand hitch off of ebay. Where can I find these frame stiffeners at?
ynot89 10-02-2010, 09:09 PM Also, I am new to the whole SUV thing. What are some things I should look for when buying the hitch? What brands do you guys recommend?
As of now, most of what I will be hauling will be mountain bikes (up to 3 at a time). However, I can see a jet ski in the not-too-distant future and would like to be able to haul that without any problems.
My X is an 2002 if it makes any difference.
