: I want to paint my black 2000 X to another black...primered...
Glock FoTay! 08-18-2010, 11:37 PM My X has gone through some wear and tear on the paint. And I don't want to do any touch ups on the little scratches. But I do want a new look to it.
The factory color is Super Black Clearcoat that it came with and I want the color to be a clean primer look like Rob Dyrdek's ride:

Do you know the exact color or process in making it look like this? Thanks!
kizzolie 08-19-2010, 12:10 AM idk but that is a sweet idea.
Snow Chaser 08-19-2010, 12:14 AM A couple trucks on here are flat black.

json3904 08-19-2010, 12:41 AM if im not mistaken that ride was painted a flat black and they didnt add a clear coat.... i could be wrong though.... creepy could better answer that question for you....
TimRich 08-19-2010, 07:37 AM What I would give to get my X painted flat black... Maybe one day...lol
greentennx 08-19-2010, 07:42 AM That's what I want to do. Mine is getting rough, and needs some work.
NCPhotoTrekker 08-19-2010, 08:38 AM I like the idea, and its something that can fairly easily be touched up for damage later on. Personally, I wouldn't go with flat black. Looks great on cars, but I see the X in Olive Drab ala WWII military paint scheme. Same benefits, but would give it a much different look.
acasper708 08-19-2010, 10:25 AM Like he said if you get bad scratches you can't just buff them out. You would have to repaint. Also they did not use just black primer. Primer is pourus and will absorb water. Also will be really hard to keep clean. It will also oxidize very fast. I know the old shool hot rods that used black primer would wipe it down with armor all. The armor all would soke into the primer and give it that satin flat shine. Also would help hide small scratches. There are specific flat paints that they use on the new vehicles. You can look into bedliner options. There are companies that have nontectured liner in various colors that will be alot better to resist scratching and oxidizing. I know of a guy that has a FJ near me that lined his with a olive drab and it looks tits! I'll see if I can find a pict.

That is awesome, and exactly the look I was thinking about...maybe a shade darker, but that's the idea. Thanks for the link! Either generation X would look great like this. I even had the fleeting thought of doing it to my new one. I think I'll wait a little while on that mod though.
peewee 08-19-2010, 12:37 PM One day I will herculine my entire truck. I will have to wait until I get another vehicle, swap engines, sas, and many other things first, but one day it will happen...
Roadwarrior 08-19-2010, 03:53 PM There was a guy on XOC called SacredG, and he had what you are talking about

The light bar that this guy has on his X is now on mine (bought it from him for super cheap) ((i believe that this X is now parted out...))
greentennx 08-19-2010, 05:45 PM You know you can paint it Flat Black, and put a clearcoat on it. I have seen where there is something you can get for the clearcoat to flatten it out.
auskip07 08-19-2010, 06:01 PM Nothing looks meaner then a flat black paint job.
Bennyboy42 08-19-2010, 06:32 PM not to rain on your parade, but you do realize the full extent of this, right? i mean, doorjams, the visible metal near the windows, all of that will still be gloss black unless you go balls to the wall and strip out the interior. i like the idea, take alot of pics if you go through with it
Xterror04 08-19-2010, 06:41 PM to paint a truck the correct way bennyboy is right... seeing as the truck is black already though the jambs and engine bay and things may be alright looking... and to get a really nice flat black paintjob.. the flatness is not in the paint its in the clear....you would just spray it with a flat clear instead of a gloss clear.... I have more to say but its to much to type lol...
Steeze 08-19-2010, 06:45 PM I've actually been planning another paint scheme... Flat black is rad, but it absorbs a lot of heat... kind of a bit** on summer days...
just my opinion on the flat black

Yea thats my buddy Dan's X. He lives about an hour from me.. he's actually the one I bought my tube doors from.. about a month after I did, a drunk driver pulled out in front of him and his truck rolled.. it was totalled :( . super cool truck

Take it back to white with some grey/black camo.. Digital/block maybe?
Glock FoTay! 08-19-2010, 07:35 PM Thank you guys for the input...especially the differences between primered and flat medias. I guess I'm just used to the primered style since I had an old '62 VW bug that had gray primered for a long time.
Not sure about the OD Green concepts, I'd have to do more research...I do like my Glocks in OD Green though LOL. But since my X is already black, I'd want to keep it black. I'm used to having a hot vehicle so I love the black.
I'm sure waxing is out door if I get it flat black.

Thank you for the insight. I didn't realize how much the old gloss black may pop out in certain areas. So now I'm looking at the complete paint job that will include "parts" of the interiors.

Thats kind of the plan... not gonna thread jack this though
