Roommate has a 2004 Jeep Liberty 4x4 with part-time & full-time available.

His brother had the truck before him, and well lets start off with that 1) He never changed the oil and my roommate drove with it like that for awhile before checking it. 2) His radiator blew, and he had to get that replace...

His issues are:

1) When stopping hard or quick stop, the truck jerks like his brakes are slidding. Any idea's? We checked his brakes, they are nice & tight.

2) When taking off with the A/C on, his truck seems to mis-fire for a couple of seconds and then is able to take off. Still takes off nice, it's just that couple of seconds of delay in taking off.

3) His A/C is odd, and seems to overheat his truck. When the A/C is on and in traffic the truck overheats. Also, his 1 & 2 fan settings does absolutely nothing, but 3 & 4 blows out air... like wtf? lol. Perhaps his fan?

4) Now the BIG issue, his 4x4 system.

When he engages his 4x4 in 4-HI Part-Time, which is the first option to engage, it won't disengage correctly. Engaging or switching into 4-HI Full-Time or lower works fine, but when he tries to turn off his 4x4 it doesn't work right. We have to keep driving around switching between 4hi parttime to 2wd back and forth before it correctly switches. We stay under the required 45 MPH and do the *factory* trick of stopping and switching between Reverse and Drive.... This has us BOTH like wtf... lol

So yeah ANY help on these issues would be kick ass. He already spent money into getting general maintenance right, and now all these other issues? Sucks lol

i hope someone here can help you, but i think your best bet is gonna be some liberty forums...the experience here is going to be most likely limited to test drives

a Liberty is called a "truck"? really...

I think the problem can be narrowed down to one thing... it's a jeep. :mocking:

Just

Empty

Every

Pocket

The brake issue sounds like something related to his ABS sensor(s). Could just be gunked up with dirt and mud.

For the overheating issue, check the coolant levels.

For the 4WD... shoot it! ;) I'm not sure how their 4WD engages but if it uses a vacuum actuator like a lot of other domestic 4WD's then you've probably got a severed hose or the actuator itself is bad.

I still say shoot it. :D

A/C being on doesn't surprise me that it overheats his engine. Same reasoning that having the heat on can help cool the engine a bit..

He could have a bad clutch or something on the a/c pump..

Not to bust your bubble, but I had a 2004 Liberty 4x4 with almost 100000 miles of trouble free driving, including off road, beach driving, and dragging a boat up and down the east coast. Mine was an excellent vehicle. Of course I actually took care of it. WTF?

Based on what you wrote, it sounds like for a part (most) of it's time it has had zero or next to zero PM. Well, duh?? it ain't working right. Gee, wtf???

How many miles? Has it had scheduled tune ups, etc. Not just an oil change? Did the half witted brother regularly engage 4x4 ? and have transfer case serviced?

No offense, but he might want the brakes looked at by someone that routinely works on brakes.

Here's a tip, don't let him or his brother drive your Xterra, and I would refrain from slamming a vehicle based on what's wrong with it after those two dim wits were responsible for it.
WTF?

I think its OBVIOUS that its THIS poor unloved jeep/cute ute unibody tall station wagon thingie....not those that received proper care...that are the problem.

The guys I wheel with with Liberties (People DO wheel them) do have problems with reliability, but, the Liberty does have some things going for it...a high alternator, a high air intake, reasonable articulation for an IFS rig, etc.

For the issues mentioned, I'm jumping to the fan speeds that work/don't...that's typically a fan resistor going south on you...and they tend to lose fan speeds that will work either one at a time, or, one day, ONLY high works, etc. (When ONLY high works, its gone for good - as "High" is the open circuit/fail safe)

1) - Not sure what the description MEANS, as when the truck JERKS, its being STOPPED typically, and NOT sliding.

Do you mean the truck slews to one side when braking, as in braking more on one side or wheel than another?

That can be a simple frozen caliper, likely, if they were never lubricated.

2) By "Mis-fire for a couple of seconds", do you just mean there was a hesitation, a stumble, or do you mean that several spark plugs did not fire/the engine rocked, etc?

If the event is tied to the AC being on, the added drag can add load, and, there is a program that's supposed to up the idle speed when the AC is on...if the CPU KNOWS about it...if not, the idle can be low, leading to a stumble on take off, etc.

3) The Aux fan for the AC might be on the fritz/fuse blown, etc. The fan clutch could be shot.

He could need a new radiator cap, as the system might have trouble holding pressure...given that the lack of maintenance would lead one to assume it might need a new one.

The fan resister tends to go out like that, a speed or 3 at a time (See post above)

4) There can be a difference between BEING IN 4wd, and the 4WD INDICATOR LIGHT being on/off.

Most systems lock the hubs when you go into 4wd, and roll forward a given distance, and, UNlock them after you shift in 2WD, and go in REVERSE a given number of feet.

An indicator LIGHT is triggered by a SWITCH that is engaged at the t-case, and, this switch can go bad...leaving the light on, or, off, or, somewhere in between from time to time, etc....when the switch is mechanical, and loose, its likely that sometimes you catch it right, and sometimes you don't....like jiggling a loose connection can make it work sometimes, etc.

If t is.the manual t case like.some of the older jeeps get under it.and look at the linkage. It will most likely have play in it that can cause it to only engage certain positions
