Hi. Im Tyler. I am 17 years old and driving an 09 Toyota Corolla. I was taken offorading in a friends Xterra and have been hooked since. I live in NE Pennsylvania so there are plenty of places to drive. I also love downhill mountain biking so getting an offroad vehicle would go hand in hand. Time for a question.
Are the 2000-2004 Xterras better than the 2005-up Xterras or vice-versa?

What kind of Q? Is that! Of coarse the 05+ are better :-) actually they both have equal but different strengths and weakneses. I feel the 1st gens have stronger stock drivetrains the 2nd gen front diff is very weak. But the 1st gens are underpowered and 2nd gens are very peppy! If your plannin on doin solid axle swap in the future then go with a 1st gen. Or want to do a upgraded bullet proof IFS then get a 2nd gen and do a Titan front end swap. 1st gens need a 1.5" suspension lift and a 2" body lift to fit 33's but the 2nd gens can fit 33's stock. There tons of variables.

Welcome to CX!
If left mainly stock, the second gen gets way better mileage. I regularly get between 20 and 25mpg in my '08, and I have 33" tires on mine.
But if you get an Xterra, it won't matter what gen you get. You're going to love it no matter what. They're all great vehicles!

If i can get a 2005 4x4 xterra, it would be fine for offroading with a set of 33s?

That will get you started and then after you go out a few times you will want more and more mods....
Sorry I've said to much now.

M just a little concerned about dropping $12000 on a 2005 model and having the possibility of an accident. (thought came after my friend drove his into a tree)

it's all opinions on what's better, i feel my first gen (00') x is cheaper to mod then the 2nd gens, and it's also a little more fun i think.
the 2nd gen guys love theirs too. regardless of the year, you'll never stick with just the tires as a mod.
