: Help with speaker wiring?

I'm currently installing some new rear speakers, and Crutchfield said they don't have any adapters that will work for us (despite them being available for the person that did the writeup)... anyway, I'm just going to cut off the plug on the speaker wire and solder it on.

Problem is, the wire colors don't match the wiring diagram. It says that for the right rear, + is blue and - is pink. I have an orange wire, and a black w/ pink one. Anyone know which is which? I'm going to go take off the left side trim and see if they match over there.

Thanks for any help :D

Ok left side doesn't match either.

I just remembered I have a multi-meter and I'm thinking I could just turn the car on and see which wire has juice. So now my question is, am I measuring DC voltage or current? Or am I even wrong on the DC?

it's AC. milivolt to volt range depending on what is playing.

are you saying you have three wires? organe, black and pink? or an orange and black/pink wire?
If there are only two wires then I would venture to guess the black is the negative and orange the +. It really doesn't matter how you hook it up. The only problem you will have is phasing. From what I understand if both speakers are playing same frequency at same time out of phase they can cancel each other out.

Thanks for the info. I just wired each speaker the opposite way and faded it side to side and one was obviously better. I tried hooking the meter up, but both wires had current (duh! lol). But all is good now, just putting stuff back together. Thanks again

Well an old trick I use is once you cut the plug off the wire plug it back into the old speaker and strip the ends off the plug and touch a battery to each end of the wire. If the cone pushes out then whatever wire is touching the positive on the battery is the positive wire. It's a handy trick...lol

hope you measured the backspace before you soldered. The rear holes aren't very deep so many speakers don't fit. Especially coaxial ones.

hell even Infinity Reference 6x9"s fit, although snuggly. The battery trick is the easiest way, or if you're doing all 4 just make sure you use the same pin as positive and it won't really hurt.

I checked the fit before, but they were only about 1.8" deeper than stock and I could get my finger behind those ones. But it still is a snug fit on both sides.

I think I remember hearing that Xplods fit, although I could be wrong. These ones did though!

I put in some infinity speakers the other day and just ran by Best buy and picked up a pair of adapters for like 10 bucks. they keep em in stock in the install bays
