: Body lift problem Im a Newb
Renegade239 08-27-2007, 08:20 PM Sorry guys im new to site and dont know much about mods for this type of stuff. I have a 2001 x 4x4 se all stock. I went to a 4x4 place today and was told that a body lift would cause a lot of problems for the installer(AC lines r the issue) Is he blowing smoke or is this true. I read nothing about this. Iam looking at the style more than the off road issue. Want the higher look with big wheels and tires 17-20on rims with Meaty tires. Suggestions on body lifts and knowing what to aks for would be helpfull.
Anthony 08-27-2007, 08:48 PM The body lift hasn't caused an problems for me. AC lines? They shouldn't be an issue.
As for the reason you want the body lift... may not be worth all the effort.
Renegade239 08-27-2007, 08:54 PM So they do or dont have to move the AC lines. And what do you mean not worth it suggestions are welcome. Like I said i know nothing about this. How can i accomplish with out this bl? 17-18in wheel 32-33in tire
soccerbrace 08-28-2007, 02:39 AM No, no moving AC lines, stick with talking to people who have worked on Xterras. I do think that this guy is blowing smoke. And possibly toking it too.
I get frustrated with listening to guys at 4x4 shops. They are so used to their domestics that they think whatever applies to those, applies to everyone. I cannot tell you how many people I know that got screwed over. IMHO, listen, and make it a test of trial and error. I say to even do your own work. My buddy Nate just brought his truck to a shop similar to which you speak, and he paid $500 for the 3" SL install and they did not even install it right. I would have done it for a steak and bottled water.
You want to know what I bought from them last? I bought an Optima Battery and tires. I bought those because they are universal. That is the only reason I go to those shops anymore because I need something that is universal. Remember even when doing this, find the best price online and have them match it.
Here is Anthony's Xterra

What does their Xterra look like?
:)
Stick with those in the know:)
Ok and for the rims, and the tires. You can do a 17",18" rim no prob. Here are the things that you have to know.
Disclaimer...this is not me yelling, this is me warning you...
DO NOT LET A 4 X 4 SHOP TELL YOU WHAT SIZE YOU CAN OR CANNOT RUN, LET US DO THAT! :)
Here are the things that you must know when ordering a rim
size-I have 17's
width-I believe it is 8 (someone correct me if I am wrong)
backspacing-MAKE SURE IT IS 5.5!!!!
lug patter-6 lug
center bore-5.5"
As for the tires, you can go 33" but you do have to stuff that with a BL.
And I believe Anthony is against you just throwing a BL and tires on for looks.
I say go for it, and then come to me and Anthony a little bit later and ask us about suspension lifts. You have embarked on a modification journey. Your wife or girlfriend will be envious of your truck and you will be in the dog house often!
Oh yeah, and about 18"s I would stay away from that. The bigger the rim, the less tire is on there. The less tire (ie 33/12.5/17 vs. 33/12.5/18) the more expensive. Why? Because tire companies are like that, and the bigger the rim, the more you get punished in the wallet for it on tires. 17"s are bad enough. Not to mention, there are tighter tolerances on the sidewall and they are not conducive to offroading......which you WILL be doing! Have a nice day buddy, and be patient with your mods. By the way, do not buy the BL from AC. Piece one together!-James
Anthony 08-28-2007, 07:54 AM The AC lines on the firewall DO get moved, but it's just a very simple matter of removing the plastic clips that secure them to the firewall. You also unsecure/re-secure some of the brake lines where they attach in the engine bay.
Some other things that go along with doing a body lift:
-Remove lower fan shroud
-Relocate the power steering reservoir
-Relocate rear bumper by re-drilling mounting holes.
-Relocate front bumper with new brackets
-*possibly* notch around t-case shifter (not always necessary)
My comment about whether it's worth it... it's just a big job to do if you're just going for looks. But that's your choice to make. :)
As for 18" or larger rims, you're not going to find much out there that will fit, and my suggestion would be to upgrade the brakes if you go over 18" wheels.
You can fit 32" tires on a stock truck with a bit of trimming, but you NEED the body lift to go to 33's.

I left the reservoir sitting where it was no problems here!
Renegade239 08-28-2007, 09:37 AM Thanks guys the info has been awsome. I am not really the most versed guy for tech stuff or even doing the work myself. Any suggestions on finding a shop in my area. SW Florida . As for looking on the internet for the right item and ordering the right thing i could use some advice. Thanks

I've been present for 4 body lifts being installed so far, and I'm not sure how you managed the install without unsecuring the brake lines and ac lines???... I could see possibly not doing the ps reservoir (is line crimped at all?)
Donald? any help?

Dude, I would join a Florida Xterra group as well as this one. The benifits of this, XF and XOC are that you can get info from everyone accross the country and across the world. The benefits of a Florida one is that everyone is closer to you and they can come over and help you do it. They will even know local vendors who may be able to help
Anthony, I never bothered with the AC or brake lines and have yet to run into any trouble regarding that. And I removed the powers steering reservoir, but ended up yanking it back up and putting it back in that little slot.
CJ, I am in CO springs bro! Remember you PM'ed me and said let's get together? By the way, that picture is on South Academy by Bally Fitness and 4wheel parts. Call me bro!-James

Ricer-X 08-29-2007, 09:00 AM you dudes that did your own body lifts
how did you lift the body off the frame?
json and i are gonna do the 2" piece together BL, but im kida stumped on how to get it off the frame.
would it be easier to drop the frame or lift the body?
soccerbrace 08-29-2007, 12:35 PM Drop the frame? Just check out that how to that I put in the last post.
You break all of your bolts, remove all bolts on one side, crank, slip the pucks, tighten that side, remove the other side. crank, slip the pucks, then torque.
Renegade239 08-29-2007, 12:56 PM Was that engish or french shop talk. Oh sorry still a newb LOL

You want to use big block of wood on top of a floor jack. This block of wood should have a groove cut into it to place around the pinch seam of the body.
