I have a 2002 Xterra with 164,000 miles. I recently have been having a trnsmission problem. While at highway speeds the transmission feels like it is shifting from overdrive to drive and back very quickly. The tach shows only about 200 RPM difference during this change. The problem comes and goes, I have driven for 50 to 100 miles and not had this occur and I have also driven 25 miles and felt it happen many times. Anyone had a problem like this?

Welcome :) Stick around, someone will have the answer...have you had your timing belt changed?

Yes, the timing belt was replaced about 1000 miles ago. I understand that Xterra's have some distributor problems. I was wondering if that could be the culprit. Not sure what it is at this point. Overall I have had good luck with my Xterra. I would like to fix the problem and keep it going. I had a mechanic plug in and the code showing is the torque converter
I may need to replace the converter. I have always been told to replace the transmission at the same time, but the transmission has been performing well until this problem came. Would it be recommended to replaceme the transmission at the same time if the converter is bad?

i dont think its the dist at this time but you should pull the cap rotor and electronics and look in the bottom for black dust or loose parts here is what your looking for.http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=19560
back to your problem does the speedo act up or the cruise control act funny at the time you are having the problem?

hahaa well I exaggerate, I can rotate tires, change a flat, replace wipers, that sort of thing, but anything more than that is beyond me :)

When was the last transmission fluid change? Mine had rough torque converter lockups/unlocks and a fluid change fixed it (change it at least twice, though; you only get half the fluid out when doing a drain/fill).
