: power drawbacks of larger tires?

i have a 2004 4x4, i had one general tire blow out and am on my spare. looking at my tires they are getting sort of wore out, they have 42k on them.

i was looking at just getting all 4 new tires and keeping the original spare.

i like to get some bfg mud terrains, i would like to go larger just for the looks part, nothing more (i don't off road hardly with my dd).

i been reading through and i am guessing 32x11.5/16 is the largest that fits with just some trimming, thats correct? what metric size does that corrospond too?

now about power, the xterra is already on the slumpy side of power, does the increase tire size affect the power that much? or is it not noticable?
i still want the thing to be able to get up a hill at decent speeds and not kill it doing it.

If it's just for looks, then I'd stay with the stock size and definitely stay away from mud terrains!

You'll lose gas mileage, your tires will cost more but will wear out faster, you'll have horrible traction in rain/snow/ice, and you'll feel the power loss for sure - as it will take more torque just to turn the wheels.

I'd recommend a set of stock sized BFG AT's.

stock size is ugly, i like bigger. i drive an f350 normally with mud terrains so i am not a stranger to the tire world. my last bfg's lasted 50k, still had tread on them when i replaced them with bigger swampers.

i am just wondering if it is a huge noticable power loss.

i noticed your xterra, very nice by the way, when speak of on the road handling with the mt, does it float around? or what? my f350 weighs a bunch so it stays glued to the road good and it performs great off road and in all conditions, but maybe the xterra is too light for the mt's?

i am not sure the wieght difference in the tires, but more concerned about the larger tire affecting the gearing ration for taking off and holding speeds on the highways, especially going up hills.

i was thinking of trading up to a 2005+ but really don't feel like going through the hassle of it. so i just want to play around with this one.

Ive got "31x "10.5 BFG Mts on "15 pro comp rock crawlers on my "02 X and it looks great! i also have the tortion bars cranked pretty good and only had to trim some plastic. There is some power loss. but i also only have a 4cy/2.4lt. I can still take it on trails and was able to make it up some steep hills with sorf dirt. it still moves but there is still pretty good tracktion on the road, it wont get traction like the ATs but they deffinetly look meaner. you may want to check out www.tirepackage.com (http://www.tirepackage.com) . i got my set for $750 total and they shipped tom me mounted and balanced in less then a week!

I've been running Super Swamper LTB's which are a really agressive MT. I noticed a huge difference in the truck. I actually thought something was wrong at first. Slow accelerations, have to downshift on uphills, etc.

With a more mild MT like the BFG, etc. It won't be as bad. But remember the Xterra has under 180 horsepower, so switching to larger tires makes a much bigger difference than it does on the ford.
