Got the X 10/17/09: 2002 Black 5 speed 4x4 with ~100,000 miles. The interior and exterior are in great condition. It was in a front end collision, but I had a mechanic look at it before I bought it and he said everything was repaired properly. I overpayed a bit, but I got the dealer to throw in tires, alignment, battery, and battery terminal. I absolutely love it, and that much more now that I'm on this forum!
Here's how she stood when I got her:
http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/new%20x/025.jpg
http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/new%20x/027.jpg

http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/new%20x/030.jpg
I spent $100 on Craigslist steprails because my driver's side was bent... LOL Now I have 3 running boards sitting in the garage...
Coming from a car that was essentially un-moddable (91 Corolla) I was focused on interior and sound, so I got a killer deal on the JVC KDS100 deck from Crutchfield, which was initially a factory option for some car. It has software in it from Bongiovi Acoustics (cousin of Bon Jovi I think) that is designed to make stock speakers sound good. It really works; the stock components sound really good (coming from Infinity Reference and Alpine Type S). Also has USB and MicroSD:
http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/new%20x/036.jpg
Then I installed my 8" Bazooka from my old car. I know it's not big, but it rounds out the music nicely, and still shakes the mirror and stuff, without being obnoxious outside the truck.
http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/new%20x/040.jpg
During the deck install, I sort of hardwired my Garmin GPS (love it). I added a hidden plug rather than actually hardwiring so I can switch it from car to car if needed. I did it by splicing into the wires for the plug in the dash and running it down toward the pedals:
http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/new%20x/038.jpg
Here it is installed:
http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/007-1.jpg
Then I realized that the steprails and mudflaps had to go:
http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/Xterra%20Before%20PML2/012.jpg
Then I HAD to go a little higher with the PML:

http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/Xterra%20After%20PML/075.jpg
Then just yesterday I had 35% put on the front two windows:

http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/89b2f7a3.jpg
In the future, I have several different scenarios that I wouldn't mind happening :D All include sliders.
1. BL, 33s or maybe 32s on 4.5" backspaced wheels. Either complete steering swap (preferably SLR) or HD TRAs with new ends and aftermarket centerlink. Also probably a rear tire carrier bumper.
2. UCAs and Alcan springs for about 1" of lift. 1.5" up front and 1" in the rear (with my AC shackles) to lessen the rake a bit and add another inch, which is all I could probably get out of the UCAs.
I'll also get new torsion bars and a winch either way.
I'll need tires before winter 2012, so what I get will depend on my situation then. If I have enough disposable income to do one of the above I will, if not I'll get 265/75/16 Duratracs load range C, and then when I can do the UCAs and springs.

xtacular 06-23-2010, 11:44 PM Thanks everybody! I am worried about the mods, but I'm having a lot of fun and I've hardly done anything!
xtacular 07-10-2010, 03:03 AM Finally got it aligned after the PML... This cheap lift turned out to be not so cheap because my camber adjustment bolts were frozen (Utah car previously). :(
new camber adjustment bolts + hardware: $90
2.5 hours labor: $150
alignment: $60
shackles: $85 shipped
Total cost: over $400 with tax
So now that I've driven it a bit after this alignment, I'm pretty sure that Les Schwab didn't do a complete job when I had them align it 8 months ago. It steers and handles way better than it ever did since I got it... if I understand correctly, previously they could have only done toe-in adjustments... those bolts sure didn't freeze since I got it.
Anyway, it's good to go now... here are some up to date pictures of her shined up:

90 bucks for chamber bolts? they can all be bought OEM from courtesy nissan for 40 bucks shipped to your door
man, you could of easily saved yourself a couple hundred bucks
xtacular 07-10-2010, 05:01 PM Thanks for the comments everyone!
@fusionfronty- I know I could have gotten the parts cheaper, but my mechanic would not install them unless they bought them, so they could guarantee them. And it wasn't just bolts, it was nuts and washers too. There was about 20-$25 profit in there for them for those parts, and I was ok paying it. As for the labor, you live and learn. I've never cut bolts out before, I'm sure I could do it, but oh well.

Bolts only for both sides are just over $40 shipped. Bolts, eccentric washers, and nuts for both sides are just over $70 shipped.

no,
when i did my lift, the whole deal with the washers/nuts AND ALSO the t-bar adjuster bolts/nuts came to 60 or so bucks, the t-bar adjuster bolts were 10 bucks a pop
unless they drastically changed their prices...
also, 4x4 parts sells them for roughly the same price as courtesy
xtacular 07-10-2010, 07:17 PM Don't know why we're arguing about this but...
from Courtesy:
$10 per cam bolt
$3.50 per eccentric disk
$1.87 per nut
= ~$60 plus shipping
There are sets on 4x4parts, but not for first gen Xs that I can see

xtacular 07-18-2010, 03:47 PM Completed a few mods and maintenance items today. I changed the fuel filter and cleaned the MAF sensor, hopefully I'll get a little better mileage.
I also switched tool boxes, made a LOBO rack, and did a little something with the rear tailgate/edge of the cargo area.
Here's the LOBO rack:

http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad319/corolla4sale_photos/007.jpg
Here's the tool box I'm using now. I was using one of the plastic containers and it took up way too much cargo space, and the tools wouldn't stay in their spots.

I gotta give credit to xearth. It's grip tape type stuff I got at Lowe's. I made an impression of the design on a piece of paper and made a stencil. It took a while but I'm really happy with how it looks (from a little distance), and who knows, it may even come in handy some time :D
xtacular 07-18-2010, 03:49 PM Forgot to say, xearth did this to his running boards, so I thought I'd try it on the rear thingy

Wponcho 07-18-2010, 05:23 PM Nice X, I was wanting to see someone rock the PML without getting new wheels for a while. As this will be the same thing that I will have to do until my tires wear out.
BTW, I've noticed an increase in price from Courtesy as well.

I'm with ya... no new tires for me for another 35,000 or so, or until I get out of college and get a real job :D I know I could sell them to recoup some of the cost, but I haven't received a reasonable offer yet, and even if I did it would be a long way from taking a significant chunk out of some nice 32s.
BTW, I have the 265/70R16 tires, the largest stock size for this gen.
DK319 07-18-2010, 07:04 PM Just figured I'd let you know that you can slip the garmin charger cord in between the trim along the top and side of the dash without any issues. Just use something smooth that wont scratch the plastic and push it in there.
I had my GPS set up the same way until mine got broken into a couple weeks ago. It makes it much cleaner.
NCPhotoTrekker 07-18-2010, 08:53 PM You made a great find!!!! Lots of miles and a wreck, but she sure does look clean inside and out. That is usually a pretty good indicationi that it was taken care of for most of its life. Even if you overpayed, I bet you will have lots of years of enjoyment left in it.
As far as the GPS goes, I second putting the power wire behind the weather stripping on the door. It makes for a clean install, and leaves no permanent holes should you decide to change locations, or toss the GPS later on.

I have it plugged into an outlet that I installed in the center of the dash, down by the ECU. Can move it to a different car, and also didn't have to worry about replicating the in-line fuse or whatever it is on the power cord.
xtacular 07-28-2010, 09:05 PM Threw in some Sony Xplod 6x9s in the back, got em for $30 on Craigslist. They have 50 watt RMS and 240 peak, so I can amplify them in the future if I choose. They sound good, a lot better than stock, although the driver's soundstage isn't affected much (knew that goin in, gives me time to think about replacing the fronts with components or not)

As for the blacking the plastics, I gotta be honest, I don't like the look on black Xs; too much black. I really like it on all the other colors though. I am thinking about doing my wheels in gunmetal gray or something similar.
fallen 07-28-2010, 09:28 PM i used a dupli color Grey Bumper spray....turned out GREAT! alittle darker then factory grey, but still keeps the color contrast. i highly recommend it
i actually got the idea from LostX
xtacular 08-09-2010, 10:54 PM Update
I bought a few goodies on Craigslist: Genuine Xterra all season floor mats including the rear cargo area, factory Yakima ski racks, and some jumper cables (already have a pair but the guy threw them in for free because he wrecked his X and is just going to ride his bike) all for $60! The mats are in great shape.

what kind of paint did you use for the emblems.
xtacular 08-31-2010, 12:56 AM Thanks!
I used Nissan touchup paint but I would definitely not recommend it. It's flaking off really bad...
ALifeLessHorizontal used Behr Premium Plus Ultra which the paint person at Home Depot recommended for the application.

yeah i used the ever so easy sharpie marker....thats already gone...im thinking paint pen? or pinstripe paint.
xtacular 08-31-2010, 12:31 PM Might be hard to get something to stick cause it's so glossy. I wanted to rough it up with something but couldn't think of a way of doing it without getting the rest of the emblem too
kizzolie 08-31-2010, 12:33 PM agreed
Wolf0503 08-31-2010, 12:35 PM Testors used to make paint pens in all sorts of different colors, Used to work when I build models, don't know how it would hold up. I think they were like 3-5 bucks back then & i can't imagine them going up a tremndous amount. Seems like a cheap mods for once
TimRich 08-31-2010, 02:05 PM What about using a dremmel to rough up the surface on the emblem? They are pretty precise and have a ton of diffrent tips you can use. Just a thought.
xtacular 08-31-2010, 02:15 PM Yeah that could work, or I'm thinkin maybe just use the dremmel tip by hand
TimRich 08-31-2010, 02:28 PM Yeah that may be better. At least you would have to worry about messing it up that way.
drbandkgb 01-27-2011, 01:44 PM Turk parts bump :)
xtacular 01-27-2011, 01:50 PM Ah I've been meaning to post pics. I will when I get home unless it's dark then it'll have to be tomorrow. I'm trying to find somewhere to flex out the rear but don't know where...
xtacular 01-27-2011, 04:39 PM Ok update time. Since the last post I've switched out every fluid with synthetic (diffs have Royal Purple Max Gear and Tranny and Tcase have Redline MT-90, and Penzzoil Platinum 5w30 in the motor with K&N filter). I was having some shifting issues and now it's like butter. Also got Teflon wiper blades.
I also lowered the front because I cranked it too high initially. Added 240 lbs of sand to the rear for traction.
Then I threw on an ARB bumper I got a killer deal on, and Turk's rear Ranchos. Oh and I hacked out the rear sway bar too. I'm done for a while, I'm out of money. I have some Energy Suspension front sway bar bushings I'll be installing but that's about it. Oh and I'm getting the P1143 code (along with KS) so I'll be replacing that O2 sensor. Now for the part anyone really cares about, pics!

KChurch86 01-27-2011, 07:31 PM Looks good man!
drbandkgb 01-27-2011, 09:02 PM Glad you got those shocks on.. Id raise that front up a touch... You got a steal on that bumper looking good
xtacular 01-27-2011, 09:11 PM Thanks all!
I would love to raise the front but that would require new UCAs :)
It's as high as it will go with 1/2" at the bumpstops. Initially when I raised it I left 1/4" and started having problems and lowered it. Even with 1/4" gap, it was still pretty raked, a little more than stock. It must have been raised in the front more than normal to begin with, either from the factory or not. I personally think it came like that from the factory because it had plenty of rake when I got it, with the front being raised more than normal.
I don't have sandbags in the back in the pics so it looks more normal with those in there, or if I have it loaded up.
Duttru1006 03-28-2011, 06:31 PM how do yo like those ranchos? im in the market for some new shocks! im pretty sure im rocking the same ones from 2002! I love the all black X's you can check mine out by searching"finally some pics" let me know what you think?
xtacular 03-28-2011, 07:25 PM how do yo like those ranchos? im in the market for some new shocks! im pretty sure im rocking the same ones from 2002! I love the all black X's you can check mine out by searching"finally some pics" let me know what you think?
Let me preface this by saying I bought the shocks used. They only had 5,000 miles on them but I'm thinking they may have been rough miles (nothing against the seller; buyer beware- I knew they were used).
Anyway, I believe I replaced them with my original ones too. On road, honestly they are rougher. It feels like they don't dampen micro-bumps and dips. It's definitely harsher. I don't know how much of this is attributable to them being stiffer valved, and how much to them being worn out. With all the positive comments I've heard on these shocks, I'm thinking they are worn.
Off road, they are definitely better than the worn out stock ones. They do a much better job of dampening larger impacts and dips, and they eliminated the body roll I felt going through potholes after removing my rear sway bar.
Overall, I'm happy I switched because of the better control off road and I'm able to flex all the way.
drbandkgb 03-28-2011, 07:30 PM They shouldnt have been worn out at all.... I took them on 3 off roading trip I think...
I could tell a big difference vs what I had... I know your not bashing me... Just for the record :D
And the one coal creek trip where you see me flexed out is as hard as they would have ever seen..
You have to think too.. you have a big piece of metal on the front that may have some effect on the ride

It must just be the stiffer valving then. And maybe my old shocks weren't as old as I thought- my shackles are totally rusty in less than a year!
xtacular 03-28-2011, 07:40 PM You have to think too.. you have a big piece of metal on the front that may have some effect on the ride
I can feel it when I go over little bumps- the front is nice and gentle then the rear clunks over. And it didn't feel any different once I put the bumper on with the old shocks. It's no biggie, I'm happy with them :)
drbandkgb 03-28-2011, 07:42 PM ok :)
I feel bad... I don ever want people thinking id sell something worn out...
And I know that wasnt your intent
xtacular 03-28-2011, 07:47 PM ok :)

No need to feel bad. My X doesn't ride rough or anything (that's what she said), and they definitely perform a lot better on uneven ground. I got a comment about the smooth highway ride last week from a 2003 Subaru driver actually.

You should really mount these shocks with the body at the top, and the rod pointing down.
These are upside down.
(They work better the other way)

:laugh-big::laugh-big::laugh-big:
That SHOCKS ME.
Seriously, the body goes up, and the rod goes down on about all of them...you must have the one with flipped valves, which is why they had to label it....so it GETS installed that way.
Normally, on a twin tube shock, the valves are set up to work body up/rod down...as it baths the seals in oil as the rod goes in/out.
Even on a monotube shock, they last longer (But work the same) with the body UP.
At least you noticed, which is cool.
I was looking for potential reasons you'd be unhappy with its performance.
I guess its just the shock itself.
What's the model specific info?
Or the numbers off the side..you might be able to cross reference it and find the valving. (Or the seller might remember?)
If later on, you want a different shock, you'd then know what valving you already have...and which direction in rebound/compression you'd prefer.
:wink-big:

LOL
Numbers on the side are
C31 7C1
RS5116
The second one shows T100/lifted Xterra application but I don't see the valving. Is that what the first set of numbers is?
I like your idea; I'd probably keep rebound valving the same and dial back on the compression a little.
Rancho's site is down for maintenance.....
But if its the stock rear shock for the T-100, that SHOULD put it at around 255/70 valving.
That's the same OEM sized application that the Bilstein HD's are borrowed from.
Hmmm...if you like the rebound...say ~ 255, which mostly controls your sprung weight (The frame and up, etc..)...
...but, want softer compression, which mostly controls your unsprung weight (Axles, tires, etc...), that typically indicates that might be using lighter tires/wheels than expected...or, that you have a lower spring rate in the suspension than expected, etc....(Or than a stock T-100 has...)
...or that the bushings in the shackles are binding?
(etc)
xtacular 04-18-2011, 06:19 PM I think I had it backwards lol. It hits rough when downtraveling. But it's really not bad.
xtacular 05-19-2011, 09:14 PM Thought I'd post up what I'm keeping in the X nowadays- all sorts of fluids, tools, blankets, water, flares, jack from a big pickup, hitch ball, hitch shackle, 30' 20,000 lb snatch strap, winter driving kit, multi meter, ratchet straps, fluid pan, and work gloves.

Hey where did you get that mat for the cargo area. That looks really handy.
I got it on Craigslist- $50 for a ski rack, full set of all weather Xterra mats, and the rear mat! From a guy that wrecked his X.. It was a factory option but I've only seen one other X with it I think.

No prob, yeah it is really nice to have. You'd have to spill a ton of liquid to get it to spill out. It also comes with dividers for organizing your stuff, which I think I have somewhere if you want them :) Oh and the bottom is padded pretty well too.

Under 'interior' you'll find a link to the lobo rack for 1st gen:
http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=8404
How you mount it is really up to you, there are a ton of different ways. But that writeup has the size for the rack- look in the garage organization section at Lowe's/HD. IMO the mounts in that link are a lot of unnecessary work. Some people use caribeeners. I used some nylon rope and made those Vs you can see in the picture so it doesn't sway and hit the side windows. For the front mounts I recently switched to little caribeener-like things because the plastic things in the ceiling cut through the rope. If yours has the rounded metal hooks it'll be fine.
sllt1776 05-21-2011, 11:13 PM Spotted another rear cargo mat like yours. :)

xtacular 09-20-2011, 09:27 PM Some good stuff coming! Not all that exciting but I am STOKED! By the end of the weekend I should have a completely rebuilt tranny, new Luk clutch and related parts, resurfaced flywheel, lights on the bumper wired to handle much more than 2 55w lights, extended HD Bilsteins, an oil change, and a wash!
I could only get the switch installed before I dropped her at the tranny shop. Hopefully the blue LED matches ok with the gauge lights.

xtacular 09-21-2011, 09:02 PM Appreciate it.
I forgot I'm also doing the resistor mod. I have read from a couple of people who saw gains on N/A motors. Worst case it doesn't do anything. I have pending and stored knock sensor codes as it is and I'm not checking for problems producing a knock... what good is a knock sensor, whether it's working or not, that when it throws a code (if you even realize it!) you just assume it's bad? I see no reason not to especially with free resistor, solder and shrink tubing.
sllt1776 09-22-2011, 10:58 PM resistor mod?
xtacular 09-23-2011, 12:01 AM To bypass the knock sensor.

xtacular 09-26-2011, 04:14 PM I don't know, I've read from a handful of people that it helped. At the very least I'll like not throwing any codes lol
Haven't done it yet

xtacular 09-26-2011, 11:21 PM MiskyWhisky is the only person I recall specifically saying he saw gains (like 1 mpg) but there are a couple others floating around... they might be on ClubFrontier or something.
xtacular 10-12-2011, 12:10 AM Little update. The rebuilt tranny and new clutch feel great. There is a ton of new hardware down there, I feel bad for them. All new tbar anchor nuts, crossmember mounting hardware. I just have to go in and have the tranny mounts adjusted since they've settled and there's a little vibration idling.
Got the lights installed. They're cheapo lights but they actually work pretty well and I'm all wired for some good lights when I can.

Also installed extended Bilsteins: front is F4 - B46 - 1099 - H2 and rear is F4 - B46 - 2126 - H1. Apparently they don't make H1s or H0s for the front anymore. The fronts were a nightmare. They ride excellent, and the rears extend another inch than the extended Ranchos. Also cut an ABS line which turned out to be the least of my worries. Spliced it with triple layer shrink wrap, electrical tape, fuel line and 2 sets of zip ties.

xtacular 10-12-2011, 02:29 PM That is for sure! I'm at a place right now where I can't afford $1,000 set of tires, and I still probably have 20,000 miles left on these. They actually do really well in the snow for what they are, so I'm going to rock them through the winter and wait until I can get what I really want.

I want to get 265/75/16 load range C Duratracs. I've also thought about BFG KM2s and getting them siped. How do you like yours? If I can find some 15s from another X or Frontier for a reasonable price I'll do that.
sllt1776 10-12-2011, 11:36 PM I like mine and they are siped....but I almost rather have the AT's. I plan to try them on the next set. I had them on 2 other rigs and liked them for better snow traction. KM2's are ok but want better and I don't off-road much.
xearth 10-13-2011, 11:40 AM I gotta give credit to xearth. It's grip tape type stuff I got at Lowe's. I made an impression of the design on a piece of paper and made a stencil. I like that rear cargo mat. Somebody has some locally, without organizers (weather tech brand I think), new for $45. You got a good deal for everything, I still need all weather floor mats. I have some old old yakima ski racks that I'll probably use, I might have to paint them black. They are probably from the 80's, and are shiny silver. Ski season is just around the corner....
Also, what brand skid plate do you have on your ARB?
xtacular 10-19-2011, 11:21 AM Heck yeah can't wait for the slopes to open!!
The skid doesn't have a brand it's just welded on. I don't know if this bumper was a prototype or something or if someone just modded it. It also came with a grill guard insert and I've never heard of/seen any other one with either.

sllt1776 01-20-2012, 03:28 PM I'm liking the last two mods on your ride. I have oil leaking someplace. I can smell it when I have the heater on. Valve covers screws were really loose. tighten them hoping it will fix the issue. I should know in a day or two. How you like the new tires?
xtacular 01-20-2012, 04:53 PM Hopefully the loose valve covers takes care of it! I like the new tires a lot. I took it out in over 10" of snow and had no problem and it was hilly. Braking is amazing, downhill in the snow I did several hard stops and it stopped without ABS. How are you liking your KM2s? How's the wear?
sllt1776 01-20-2012, 09:25 PM KM2's are great but would probably go AT's next time. Not really using them for what they are designed for and the AT's will benefit me more often. Wear is pretty good and ride is quiet. I like the look but will prefer the better snow traction with the AT's. glad you like yours so far.
xtacular 03-31-2012, 09:53 PM Got a Skid Row rear bumper and built a swing away tire carrier for it.
