Has anyone ever had a problem with their battery draining? I have a 2000 Xterra with over 180 k on it. The battery has been tested and is fine. But at least 4 times over the last month or two, I've gone to start up my car and its completely dead. At first I thought I hadn't closed the tailgate all the way or that maybe another door was cracked opened. But I don't think that is the case. I'm no mechanic but I'm not an idiot either. I've had this car for 10 years and never had this problem. Something is draining it and I can't figure it out. Could it possibly be the CD player? I listen to CD's very infrequently anymore so I thought maybe when I'm leaving the CD's in the player, somehow its accidentally drawing from the battery...loose wire or something.
That's a stretch but I'm perplexed. If anyone has had this problem or can shed any light on the situation, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi! Our 2000 XTerra just had an issue with the fuel sending unit. This was a known issue with certain models of Nissan Xterra's but our VIN number was not part of the "recall".

What happened was we would go and try to start the Xterra. We would get some lights and power, but it looked like an issue with the battery, because it would not "turn" over.

After testing the battery, charging the battery, then replacing the battery, we thought we had it solved. But then, the mechanics said it was a "fuel pump" issue. After replacing the fuel pump, the Xterra started but then quickly shut off after puttering and spitting for a few minutes.

After taking it back to the mechanic, and $1100.00 later, they replaced the fuel sending unit for a total cost of the part $88.00. Now it runs great! Definitely check your VIN number against the recall list - it might be covered.

Here is a handy tool to track down what accessory is draining the battery Just plug this into the fuse box and test the drain on each individual circuit
