So here it is guys, trying to set something up for August 7th. Thinking of getting together at either Hungry Valley or Cleghorn Ridge. Both places have different trails. Those for stock, slightly modded, and heavily modded. i'm pretty sure tho we'll be sticking to the slightly modded trails but we'll see whos feeling adventurous. i'm thinking it could be a one day thing or if others want they can camp out. i know for sure that Hungry Valley has camp sites and BBQ pits. not so sure about Cleghorn Ridge. if you're down to go sign up! i tried this a few months ago and.. yea no1 signed up. theres more people from SoCal now so hopefully we get something going...

as of now the list stands as...

I'm down as long as it's not Hungry Valley. Let's do Cleghorn and then maybe a couple other trails in the Big Bear area. There's some really good stuff up there.

Yo Amber, when they say "stock" SUVs, they aren't really thinking of a stock ORE Xterra. With skids, Bilstein shocks and a rear locker, it might as well be slightly modified. There really isn't a lot your Xterra can't do. That'll more be up to your confidence level than your ride's ability. But, speaking for myself and hopefully the others here as well, I won't let a noob get themselves into trouble if I see it coming. Go slow and easy, ask for help if you need it, and don't proceed until you're sure you can (or your spotter is).

LOL... yea but I don't have those awsome bumpers or a lift -- yet :) but I have only done the off road driving I have posted on here... :) I looked up that place and its 3 and a half hours away... and I have not seen my Aug schedule yet.. probably not till July!! :)

I did find out that that Valley place is HOT in Aug though... and that Cleghorn does have two routes... one easy one hard and they crisscross ...

Have you done this tail before?

NateDawgG
06-18-2010, 10:51 AM
With the ORE you really don't need a lift for most things. And the bumper is just to look killer and kill your gas mileage, though I will get Schrocked sooner or later because they are bad-ass. It's been said by me and many, many, many other people before me.... a Nisan Xterra Off Road Edition is a superb off roading vehicle right off the dealer's lot. Instant fun..... just add gas.

I've done Cleghorn and find it pretty vanilla. Though much better than Hungry Valley which is basically a closed area criss-crossed with trails that feels more like a dog run at a park than anything. Anyway, Cleghorn's high enough in elevation to be cooler than the surrounding areas. And still further up the mountain will be down right nice.

So I say pencil the drive in and invite a friend!

RawkerStatus
06-18-2010, 11:07 AM
cleghorn it is unless u may want to try big bear. ive done the easy trail at cleghorn.. its not that bad. i did it bone stock.. no lift, no bumpers, no nothing. i did keep it on the easy side but only because it was my first time out. like nate said its all about keeping control and not using too much acceleration.. and believe me.. wrecking a car is the last thing we want to do. even if its not ours.

NateDawgG
06-18-2010, 12:46 PM
Cleghorn's relatively short. How about we meet at Cleghorn Rd. at I-15 just north of Rancho Cucamonga/Fontana and then use it as the jumping off point? After we do Cleghorn, we can drive up to some higher elevation roads (easy to occasionally moderate difficulty) and not cook our balls off in the summer heat?

Those who wish to can camp over night, and the rest can be home in time for a late dinner.

I might be able to check it out. we'll have to see as we get closer to that time. I like going to Borrego and everything just because its familiar.. :) I hear big bear has some crazy stuff though...

NateDawgG
06-18-2010, 11:56 PM
Yup, there's some pretty gnarly trails on Big Bear, but I don't think anybody's suggesting we try them. One cool thing about Cleghorn is that there are some hard trails that diverge from the main trail and then re-join it a short ways later, so people will have the option to take them and yet not get separated from the group.

Yea, that particular trail is rated difficult and not recommended for novice drivers/people w/ low ground clearance. Here's what I drove on to get there. Piece o' cake!

Seriously, the only place that you may have difficulty is Rattlesnake canyon. However, with a good spotter and some patience you will be able to run just about anything in Big Bear that is not an "expert only" trail.

You and my soon-to-be-wife should have a good time up there.

Rattlesnake Canyon isn't that hard. I went up it 6 months ago solo and didn't have a single issue. Honestly, I've even gotten up "expert only" trails when my X was bone stock. Hell, a buddy and I drove up Mengal Pass in Death Valley a few years ago before I even changed from OEM tires. Trust me when I say as long as you don't pull a bone headed move you'll be just fine.

That should give me enough time to pick up some new meats. If I've got those on in time I'll definitely give it a shot in my 4X2.

Yo Rawker, would you like help planning the itinerary or would you rather do it yourself? I ask because I have some definite ideas about where to go, but I don't wanna hijack your trip. Hate it when I invite people to do something and they start changing the plan, you know?

NateDawgG
06-28-2010, 11:50 PM
Coolio man! Glad to participate. :) I'm out of town right now so my trail guide isn't available to me, but off the top of my head here's what I'm thinking.....

Meet up in the morning at Cleghorn trailhead along I-15. Cleghorn is mellow enough for people to get their rhythm. Then at Lake Arrowhead where the trail ends, we hit the highway and go around to the north side of the mountain range where we'll do Grapevine Canyon (I think that's what it's called). We drive up into the mountains from there. Stop for lunch along that trail and enjoy a good view. Once on the top we'll do Clark's Summit or Skyline Drive.

From there people can either head home or find a camping spot. Next day more alpine trails and then back down the mountain to Rattlesnake Canyon and then home.

I would like to stress that none of these trails is rated any higher than medium difficulty and should be completely doable with a stock 4X4.

How does that strike you?

So here's my official proposition re this trip:

Day 1

9am - Meet at the trailhead of Cleghorn Rd. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Cleghorn+Road,+San+Bernardino,+CA&sll=34.36271,-117.019501&sspn=0.403002,0.596008&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Cleghorn+Rd,+San+Bernardino,+California&t=h&z=13) at I-15
9:30 - Hit the trail which takes less than 2 hours to complete
11:30 - Hit hwy 138 N. to hwy 173 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=hwy+173&sll=34.315084,-117.14447&sspn=0.403231,0.596008&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=California+173,+San+Bernardino,+California&t=h&z=12) E. near Silverwood Lake
12pm - From Pinnacles Staging Area, head up Willow Creek Rd. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=willow+creek+jeep+trail&sll=34.30842,-117.276993&sspn=0.125063,0.191917&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Willow+Creek+Jeep+Trail,+Hesperia,+San+Berna rdino,+California+92345&ll=34.298281,-117.183437&spn=0.062539,0.095959&t=h&z=14) into the mountains for a short 1 - 2 hour cruise up.
Eat lunch somewhere along the road
2:30 - reconnect with hwy 173 near Lake Arrowhead and then catch hwy 18 to Big Bear Lake, then connect up with hwy 38 to Fawnskin
3 - From Fawnskin, take Grapevine Canyon (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Grapevine+Canyon+trail&sll=34.198883,-117.447538&sspn=0.050474,0.074501&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Grapevine+Canyon+Rd,+Lucerne+Valley,+San+Ber nardino,+California+92356&ll=34.307711,-117.058983&spn=0.201634,0.298004&t=h&z=12) back down the north side of the mountains on a scenic mostly easy but occasionally moderate drive along F.S. 3N14 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=3N14&sll=34.313666,-116.93573&sspn=0.250111,0.383835&g=3N16&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=3N14,+Big+Bear,+San+Bernardino,+California&ll=34.355058,-117.068596&spn=0.249987,0.383835&t=h&z=12) and 3N16. The trail should take about 2 - 3 hours and leaves plenty of daylight to either go home from Lucerne Valley where it ends up, or go back into the mountains for camping and another day of trails.
Drive form Lucerne Valley east to hwy 247 and do Rattlesnake Canyon (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Rattlesnake+Canyon,+Lucerne+Valley,+San+Bernardi no,+California+92356&sll=34.298281,-117.183437&sspn=0.062539,0.095959&g=willow+creek+jeep+trail&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FQooDAIdjFkL-Q&split=0&hq=&hnear=Rattlesnake+Canyon,+Lucerne+Valley,+San+Bern ardino,+California+92356&ll=34.280198,-116.703644&spn=0.25021,0.383835&t=h&z=12). Somewhere along the road find a spot to camp out. If we're making good time, there's nicer spots to camp up the mountain after Rattlesnake Canyon.

Day 2

9am - continue up the mountain to hwy 38
Take 3N16 through the mountains and end up west of Fawnskin
11am - Drive beautiful and easy Skyline Drive (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Skyline+Drive&sll=34.307711,-117.058983&sspn=0.201634,0.298004&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Skyline+Dr,+Angelus+Oaks,+San+Bernardino,+Ca lifornia+92305&ll=34.218332,-116.916332&spn=0.100924,0.149002&t=h&z=13) that starts and ends near big Bear
Lunch somewhere along the way
1pm - Putter around on various trails
Maybe hit Clarks Summit (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=2N10,+san+bernardino&sll=34.184684,-116.904659&sspn=0.100964,0.149002&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=2N10,+Angelus+Oaks,+San+Bernardino,+Californ ia+92305&ll=34.219042,-116.904831&spn=0.100923,0.149002&t=h&z=13) on the way down.

How does this sound to you guys? Mostly easy with some moderate thrown in for good measure. Optional 2nd day for people who wish to camp out.

I definetly still want to go, I've mapped out most of what nate had planned for Saturday and it looks like a lot of fun, not too sure where to go at rattlesnake but the maps full of trails to explore.

This event already past but You Could go but you wouldn't be doing any of the hard trails. Unless they are downhill but you need atleast a pml and remove your sidesteps. Right Scott :-)

scottmen

You don't have to remove them. The trail will most likely do that for you.
