: 2000 Xterra won't start
Markfaz 06-03-2010, 07:45 PM Ok...so I've been reading all the other threads for a bit now. I had become convinced my distributor had gone bad. It stopped running and I could crank over the engine, but it wouldn't start..etc, etc.
So, I replaced the distributor. The truck started right up and I drove it into the driveway(it had died about 50 ft from the driveway). I was ecstatic. I went inside to tell the wife we were good to go, came back outside to move it, and viola, it would turn over and not start again. ugh!
I was going to swap the ECM relay, but I cannot find where the fusebox that it is in is located. I looked under the dash at the driver side fuse box with no luck, checked the two boxes on the passenger side behind the battery. Can someone PLEASE tell me where this thing is located? Am I completely blind?
Oh, also, we have 145k on the truck, and I had the timing belt changed 35k ago.
thanks...:dork:
Markfaz 06-04-2010, 05:00 PM Does my 00 even have a IPDM?
Markfaz 06-07-2010, 10:52 AM Hmm...I'm confused. Is there something I said wrong in my intial post that I would not get ANY responses to my question? Did I irritate someone somehow? I thought it was a pretty straightforward problem question...not any worse than any other posts by others. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Drake 06-07-2010, 12:13 PM Has the fuel-sending unit been replaced on it? There was a TSB out for the FSU for the '00 and '01 models.
dejablue 06-07-2010, 12:23 PM no you have not made anyone mad we all have full time jobs and some times it takes a while to get a response. x2 on the fuel sending unit do a search and see what drake is talking about.i will be in and out and will check back with you.

soccerbrace 06-07-2010, 02:38 PM Hmmm that is odd. Did you check any fuses? Sorry you did not get any response. I will stick with this thread.
tripb101 06-07-2010, 05:08 PM how was the car running after the new distributor?
and out of curiosity have you tried resetting your computer to see if it will run after the battery has been removed for little bit or try the ignition trick to reset the computer ...
also curious when you went to go get your wife did you leave the car running and it died or did you shut if off go get the wife and 5 minutes later the car wouldn't even start up?
Markfaz 06-07-2010, 06:18 PM Dejablue,
Sorry...I was tired and grumpy when I wrote that post...I realize you guys have full time jobs as well!! :)
No, I found out the FSU was not replaced by my wife(she had it before we met). I am thinking I am going to have it towed to the dealer, I was just trying to eliminate everything else before doing so as I don't want to have them replace it, and then have the truck not start. Don't really want to have it not running sitting at a dealership and then have them working on it when I am hoping to do it myself.
Checked all relevant fuses I could find. They are all good. I am assuming I don't have the ECM relay and that is for newer models?
After I put in the new distributor, the truck was only sitting about 50 ft. from my driveway. I turned it over, it started immediately, I drove it into the driveway and turned it off. I didn't miss or anything, just smooth until I turned off the key. I was inside for maybe 5-10 minutes, and when I went to restart it, it just went back to cranking over with no firing.
Is there any easy fuel line access for removing and testing to see if I am getting fuel flow??
Oh, trip...yep, I reset the computer to no avail...
Thanks again for any assistance...sorry for the rant earlier... :aufkopfhauen-big:
dejablue 06-07-2010, 06:46 PM the problem in under the back seat there is lid that comes off im sure can take care of this.here is what you are looking for.http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=16647
tripb101 06-07-2010, 07:17 PM Always is amazing how people can do diagnosis like that with so little input but after what you just added im going to say yeah it sounds more and more like this
the problem in under the back seat there is lid that comes off im sure can take care of this.here is what you are looking for.http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=16647
Markfaz 06-07-2010, 08:13 PM Actually, that's what I WAS thinking is the problem. What I was asking is if there is a way to easily disconnect the fuel line up by the throttle body to check to see if I am getting any fuel flow. I am expecting it to be the problem, and consequently, I will be able to have it fixed by the dealership. I was trying to do some troubleshooting to exclude any other variables that may be the problem before I take it to the dealer.
outwiththeold 06-07-2010, 09:58 PM What brand of distributor did you put-in????????
Markfaz 06-07-2010, 11:05 PM It is an AM Autoparts dist I got off ebay....after it wouldn't start, I checked it for spark, which it has, and the rotor is turning, so the belt is good...
tripb101 06-07-2010, 11:24 PM you sure you got the correct distributor? there is i believe 5 made for the first gens and you replaced the distributor, distributor cap, and rotor correct your not calling the distributor cap the distributor ?
but i don't think that has anything to do with it ... the nissan manual which is stickied on this forum says how to test if their is fuel pressure in the line/flow coming out of the tank .. i believe if you put a line pressure test after the fuel pump or directly on the fuel pump you could find out if any of the above is an issue
Markfaz 06-08-2010, 07:46 AM trip...yes, I got the correct distributor...checked the stock number multiple times. oh, and yes, it was the distributor, complete with cap, rotor, and module.
sorry..overlooked the sticky on the manual...will check it out...
soccerbrace 06-08-2010, 08:47 AM Outwiththeold posted what I was thinking.
You can turn on the key and listen for fuel pump too.
Markfaz 06-08-2010, 09:12 AM Yeah, I'm not hearing the fuel pump working when I turn on the ignition...
dejablue 06-09-2010, 08:57 AM thats a good place to start with no fuel pump
Markfaz 06-09-2010, 04:42 PM Had it taken over to the dealership today to replace the FSU, per the recall, and they said it had been defective and the reason it wasn't starting. Picked it up a bit ago and it seems to be it's old self again.
Thanks for all the help....
dejablue 06-09-2010, 05:02 PM glad all is back to normal.
davissms 06-27-2010, 09:28 PM We have a 2000 Nissan Xterra that recently would not start. After much deliberation and $1000 later, it turned out to be the fuel sending unit $82.00 part which fixed the issue.
