: Looking into an X this weekend
aggieE46 05-28-2010, 07:59 AM Hey Guys!
Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm looking into picking up an Xterra for my wife this weekend (05+). She's needing something bigger (expecting our first kid) and I'd love to have something for us to take camping. I've been a Nissan fan from birth, so this was almost a no-brainer for me.
2 quick questions. I was looking into an 07ish S.
1) I'm assuming running boards are probably easy to come by, because she's short and would need them. Can someone confirm?
2) Not a big deal, but has anyone done a steering wheel retrofit with radio controls? I didn't know if the wiring was already there and just needed to be plugged in.
Thanks!
Brady

Yes, running Boards (step rails) are fairly easy to come by. You can by them new for just under $200 or keep an eye out and people who have upgraded to rock sliders will be selling them used.
I don't know of anyone who has did a radio control upgrade off hand but do a search because maybe they have.

doohic722 05-28-2010, 10:29 AM Some things to look out for.. I would ask them if they have replaced the timing chain. The timing chains have been replaced in probably more then 50% of the xterra's on here (2005+). And in many cases, not only once but twice or more. The chain design was faulty. They released a new chain just a couple months ago.
If I were you. I would ask them about that chain. If its been replaced, find out when, if it was before the new chain came out, it will most likely need to be done again. If you end up out of the power train warranty I believe the cost to fix plus labor is around 2K.
I am not sure about mine. I got it at 36K miles, almost 60K now and soon out of power train warranty.. I want to start calling dealerships and see if anyone will swap it while im still under warranty. Major problem is, is that its not an actual recall (i think it should be), its a TSB - technical service bulletin.
Other than that, I say go for it. I love my 2006 x.
dejablue 05-28-2010, 05:56 PM also the 05 has a auto transmission radiator problem.
higher4hockey 05-28-2010, 06:26 PM I've got a set of running boards just wasting away in my garage....sucks I live in PA and you live in TX or I'd just say come get them. . .

I love my 2006 X, too! Anyone have anymore info on this problem, or the TSB? The number or anything?
Thanks!

aggieE46 05-29-2010, 05:05 PM Hey Guys,
Just got home. Picked up an 08 Off Road. 46k miles. Really good shape. I'm going to get out and detail her and borrow a good lens, then I'll snap a few pics. Thanks for the advice. I'll check on the timing chain. Was it an actual recall, or just a TSB?
aggieE46 05-29-2010, 07:26 PM Quick pic, not a very good one...

aggieE46 05-29-2010, 07:31 PM Quick question, I just turned it off CD to FM and noticed that I have horrible reception. Anything quick to check?
blkxone 05-29-2010, 07:35 PM looks like mine when it was on the showroom floor, very nice find. pull the deck and see if the antenna plug is all the way in.
aggieE46 05-29-2010, 08:08 PM That was my first thought, pulled the deck, no dice.

aggieE46 05-31-2010, 05:36 PM Well, a little letdown today. I got under the truck today to check out the undercarriage. There were no Bilsteins, no skid plates. I was sold a base 4WD with an Off Road emblem on the back. I drove BACK out to the dealership today (after being there this morning after the only key they gave me was the valet key, and needing an antenna). After calmly making my case, they wrote me a check for the difference in NADA purchase value (about $700). So, it's not a true off road, but I'm sure I'll outfit it with Bilsteins and skid plates before we take it out for the first time.
Shame on me for not checking while I was there, shame on them if indeed they WERE trying to put one over on me. Although, my wife won't let me take off the Off Road badge. I'm such a ricer...
NISSAN4LIFE 06-03-2010, 02:49 PM Welcome :)
aggieE46 06-03-2010, 02:56 PM Thanks! Still loving the truck. Buying a few little parts (roadside kit, first aid kit, D-rings for the track system, cargo cover). It'll probably keep it stock until it's mine in a couple years, but I want to put some factory foglights in along with a modest stereo.

That bites!
aggieE46 06-03-2010, 03:36 PM Yeah, it sucks, but I'm over it. I'm mainly bummed about the lack of rear locker. That would be handy when the wife it finished with it. My dad has it on his Titan. Pretty nifty.
That bites!
NISSAN4LIFE 06-03-2010, 03:42 PM A TITAN? Awww man I've wanted one of those for years! I like the older Murano too LOL If I win the lottery, I'm going to get a stable and fill it full of Nissans :) I want one of each
