: Semi-pro soccer tryouts.
soccerbrace 05-17-2010, 01:48 PM Well I gave people a false alarm a few years ago. I was in great shape, and I was going to try out for the Colorado Rapids. Then I met this broad, got out of shape, and never tried out.
Now it is the opposite-I am getting fit again since I am going through a divorce (don't mention it) and another opportunity has came up. For those of you close to me, you know that absolutely nothing is going right in my life. Since that is the case, I have given myself a few options.
Air Force (I am a 6yr. Navy veteran), or soccer. Soccer is something that I have been badass at since I was 5. It is my calling and I ignored it when I joined the military. Either way, I need some certainty in my life. That is where the air force comes in.
Soccer-it is not a certainty, but I know that I am going to regret it if I never try. The worst they can say is no. Either way, tryouts are this coming Sunday, and I am going to give it all that I have. Please wish me luck (whether you think it is a pansy sport or not ;) )! Thanks!-James
TimRich 05-17-2010, 02:01 PM Good Luck James!!! I hope the tryouts go well and will be the turning point for more things to go right...

soccerbrace 05-17-2010, 04:49 PM Thanks guys. I figure if I never do it, I will kick my own ass later on for never trying. You are absolutely right, it is better to try and fail than to never try at all.
Hell ya!!! It's better to try and fail, then try again and fail again, then try again another time and fail again...... then to have never tried at all... Then at least you can look back and say "I tried my very best". :D
lostcanuck 05-17-2010, 05:15 PM Sending you all the best luck !!! you'll do great, you deserve it !!
Creepy Cruiser 05-17-2010, 05:17 PM Dude ROCK ON!!!:rocker-big::rocker-big::rocker-big:
Noxious007 05-17-2010, 06:33 PM I will cut the head off of a chicken and dip it in alligator urine, wearing a loin cloth while chanting and dancing around the Xterra. It should be pretty close to a sure thing.
All I need for the spirits to find the right soul is your name, address, bank account info and SSN.
All you have to do wear women's underwear on the day of tryouts and paint your toenails.
Good Luck James.
A close friend will need to document said man panties or "Mannies" and adorned toe nails. This will insure that the "JuJu" will stick as the "spirits" or "Internet Buddies" as they are also known, have proof of your offering.
Creepy Cruiser 05-17-2010, 07:40 PM Nice! :laugh-big:
ROFLMAO.....

James:
Give Soccer (football as the rest of the world calls it) a shot, or you WILL regret it.
In college, I graduated playing A side rugby for a more or less division II team (not sure if they had the division designations then, but we were decent.) I was never in such good physical condition in my life after that last year of school. I was a force to be dealt with at my position, I could have had a real shot at trying for a division I men's club in NYC (Ie they pull the talent or did, from that level for US national team--now they scour Div II as well) I just was sick of working out all the time and the idea of working in NYC then not getting home until midnight 3 times a week and all the effort and work involved I said "F" it and played for a decent Div II club (that I am very proud of) yet took it easy and relaxed knowing I was very good at my position. Basically I had fun, broke a leg, got fat, got skinny, had fun etc etc etc---but it isnt until now that I really regret not having made the effort or tried for the top team. Who knows, could I have played for the Eagles (US national Team) ? or would I hav ebeen cut the first season or week? See that's just it, I'll never know.
I say go for soccer!
CISO
bluex 05-18-2010, 06:19 AM Good Luck James!!! I have been playing soccer (Football) since I was about 5 years old. Getting ready for the World Cup to start here soon. We need to get a thread started for that...
Go for it like a starving mutt after a t-bone steak.
:D
In HS, a scout came from the Philly team, and asked me to go to a try out in Philly. (I played soccer back then too)
The year before, the same team had recruited another team mate of mine, and he made it, so it was a decent shot at going pro. (Our team had been undefeated for years, and scouts gave us looks)
Well, there was a conflict, I was also accepted into a pre-med program on a scholarship, but, the same day I had to be at both, so I had to choose between the pre-med and soccer.
I was a teenager trying to "be mature", so I went to the school instead of the try-out, and never found out if I would have made it.
So, the Team folded (The US league died), and I would not have played even if accepted...
...and I was blinded in an accident, and had to drop out of pre-med anyway.
So, all things considered, I'd always wished I'd just gone to the try out.
:wink-big:
Snow Chaser 05-18-2010, 06:42 AM Good luck man!
And remember, no matter what happens, you have to keep coming on here and giving us all your sage advice!
soccerbrace 05-24-2010, 10:37 AM Tryouts went well! I felt like I kicked some ass yesterday. I could've played better but I still feel like I outplayed most of the others. I have a feeling that I made the team.
Yesterday morning, I got there at 10 and I stayed until 2 so I was working out for 4 hours straight. Part of it kicked my ass, but most of the time I was kicking ass. I woke up super sore, and with a bad nights rest. I might have just been antsy.
The day before I hike the Manitou Incline, and ran down the Barr Trail. It was my first time doing it, and I felt fine that night. The next day my muscles were tired and sore though so I kind of regret it. Here is the incline just so you know how strenuous it is.:

All in all, I still did well at tryouts. There was this one drill where it was 3 defenders vs. 4 attackers. I was playing left defense and there were 2 guys that just kept on passing the ball between themselves. on the ledt side. I ran overe there and sprinted back and for about 10x between the two of them and this one guy tried to get past me. I spun around and put it through his legs and kicked the ball on one side of the other guy and ran completely around him. I ran on the ball and just blasted it. That produced the lone clap from everyone in the stadium. I was pretty stoked. Other highlights include (but are not limited to) a diving header to prevent a cross from getting through, a full speed slide tackle to get the ball out, and another slide tackle right at the top of the box from an unexpecting forward right as he shot to stop a sure goal.
johngraves2 05-24-2010, 10:40 AM nice man!
TimRich 05-24-2010, 11:38 AM Congrats! When do you find out if you made the team or to the next step?
soccerbrace 05-24-2010, 11:58 AM I am not sure when I will find out when I make it or not. They will be e-mailing/calling us.

soccerbrace 09-08-2010, 05:37 PM Just an update, we won the league championship. I will be back next season.
I lost about 25 pounds, and gained a crapload of speed.
J Everett 09-08-2010, 05:41 PM Congrats on the championship win! They're obviously keeping you busy...haven't seen you around the forum lately.
soccerbrace 09-08-2010, 05:45 PM That's not because of soccer. They totally cutoff internet access at Nissan except for Yahoo.
J Everett 09-08-2010, 05:51 PM Well, that sucks. But still, congrats on the win!
soccerbrace 09-08-2010, 05:54 PM Thanks Jason!
vandebogart 09-08-2010, 06:09 PM Holy crap!!! James is back! I've missed your humor dude!
Congrats on wining the championship!!
...ok I am resurrecting this thread. James, haven't heard of it earlier, but I will offer my congrats. This is really flipping AWESOME!!!!
BTW, two of my son's play premier soccer u11 and u16. u16 placed second in Wa state last year in top division. You are an inspiration to them! I hope they could do as good as you, one day. Keep it up.
soccerbrace 12-20-2010, 11:06 PM Hey Thanks man! :)
I started in a house team, then I went select, then premier, then Al Cafodio, then ODP, then state, then regional, and then continental. There are different names of different leagues all over the place. Premier is usually the top though. Tell them to not turn down scholarships from Stanford like I did :) lol
